Dynamical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Theory of Vortices in Bose-Einstein Condensates at Finite Temperature
We present a method utilizing the continuity equation for the condensate
density to make predictions of the precessional frequency of single off-axis
vortices and of vortex arrays in Bose-Einstein condensates at finite
temperature. We also present an orthogonalized Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB)
formalism. We solve the continuity equation for the condensate density
self-consistently with the orthogonalized HFB equations, and find stationary
solutions in the frame rotating at this frequency. As an example of the utility
of this formalism we obtain time-independent solutions for
quasi-two-dimensional rotating systems in the co-rotating frame. We compare
these results with time-dependent predictions where we simulate stirring of the

Olanzapine Attenuates Cue-elicited Craving for Tobacco
Rationale: Recent biological conceptualizations of craving and addiction have implicated mesolimbic dopamine activity as a central feature of the process of addiction. Imaging, and pharmacological studies have supported a role for dopaminergic structures in cue-elicited craving for tobacco.
Objective: If mesolimbic dopamine activity is associated with cue-elicited craving for tobacco, a dopamine antagonist should attenuate cueelicited craving for tobacco. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine whether an atypical antipsychotic (olanzapine, 5 mg) decreased cue-elicited craving for tobacco.
Method: Participants were randomly assigned to 5 days of pretreatment with olanzapine (5 mg; n=31) or were randomly assigned to 5 days of a matching placebo (n=28). Approximately 8 h after the last dose, participants were exposed to a control cue (pencil) followed by exposure to smoking cues. Participants subsequently smoked either nicotine cigarettes or de-nicotinized cigarettes.
Results: Olanzapine attenuated cue-elicited craving for tobacco but did not moderate the subjective effects of smoking.
Discussion: This study represents one of the first investigations of the effect of atypical antipsychotics on cue-elicited craving for tobacco. The results suggest that medications with similar profiles may reduce cue-elicited craving, which in turn, may partially explain recent observations that atypical antipsychotics may reduce substance use
Dissipation in nanocrystalline-diamond nanomechanical resonators
We have measured the dissipation and frequency of nanocrystalline-diamond nanomechanical resonators with resonant frequencies between 13.7 MHz and 157.3 MHz, over a temperature range of 1.4–274 K. Using both magnetomotive network analysis and a time-domain ring-down technique, we have found the dissipation in this material to have a temperature dependence roughly following T^(0.2), with Q^(–1) ≈ 10^(–4) at low temperatures. The frequency dependence of a large dissipation feature at ~35–55 K is consistent with thermal activation over a 0.02 eV barrier with an attempt frequency of 10 GHz
NcPred for accurate nuclear protein prediction using n-mer statistics with various classification algorithms
Prediction of nuclear proteins is one of the major challenges in genome annotation. A method, NcPred is described, for predicting nuclear proteins with higher accuracy exploiting n-mer statistics with different classification algorithms namely Alternating Decision (AD) Tree, Best First (BF) Tree, Random Tree and Adaptive (Ada) Boost. On BaCello dataset [1], NcPred improves about 20% accuracy with Random Tree and about 10% sensitivity with Ada Boost for Animal proteins compared to existing techniques. It also increases the accuracy of Fungal protein prediction by 20% and recall by 4% with AD Tree. In case of Human protein, the accuracy is improved by about 25% and sensitivity about 10% with BF Tree. Performance analysis of NcPred clearly demonstrates its suitability over the contemporary in-silico nuclear protein classification research
Excitation spectrum in a cylindrical Bose-Einstein gas
Whole excitation spectrum is calculated within the Popov approximation of the
Bogoliubov theory for a cylindrical symmetric Bose-Einstein gas trapped
radially by a harmonic potential. The full dispersion relation and its
temperature dependence of the zero sound mode propagating along the axial
direction are evaluated in a self-consistent manner. The sound velocity is
shown to depend not only on the peak density, but also on the axial area
density. Recent sound velocity experiment on Na atom gas is discussed in light

Bogoliubov sound speed in periodically modulated Bose-Einstein condensates
We study the Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-condensed gas in an optical
lattice. Of primary interest is the long wavelength phonon dispersion for both
current-free and current-carrying condensates. We obtain the dispersion
relation by carrying out a systematic expansion of the Bogoliubov equations in
powers of the phonon wave vector. Our result for the current-carrying case
agrees with the one recently obtained by means of a hydrodynamic theory.Comment: 16 pages, no figure
Nkx2-5 and Sarcospan genetically interact in the development of the muscular ventricular septum of the heart
The muscular ventricular septum separates the flow of oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood in air-breathing vertebrates. Defects within it, termed muscular ventricular septal defects (VSDs), are common, yet less is known about how they arise than rarer heart defects. Mutations of the cardiac transcription factor NKX2-5 cause cardiac malformations, including muscular VSDs. We describe here a genetic interaction between Nkx2-5 and Sarcospan (Sspn) that affects the risk of muscular VSD in mice. Sspn encodes a protein in the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex. Sspn knockout (Sspn(KO)) mice do not have heart defects, but Nkx2-5(+/−)/Sspn(KO) mutants have a higher incidence of muscular VSD than Nkx2-5(+/−) mice. Myofibers in the ventricular septum follow a stereotypical pattern that is disrupted around a muscular VSD. Subendocardial myofibers normally run in parallel along the left ventricular outflow tract, but in the Nkx2-5(+/−)/Sspn(KO) mutant they commonly deviate into the septum even in the absence of a muscular VSD. Thus, Nkx2-5 and Sspn act in a pathway that affects the alignment of myofibers during the development of the ventricular septum. The malalignment may be a consequence of a defect in the coalescence of trabeculae into the developing ventricular septum, which has been hypothesized to be the mechanistic basis of muscular VSDs
