The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the shear bond strengths of amalgam to dentin treated with the Amalgambond Plus (AP) and Scotchbond Multi Purpose (SMP) dentin adhesive systems and with the glass-ionomer cement, Vitrebond (V).The buccal and lingual superficial dentin surfaces of thirty extracted human third molars were exposed by wet grinding on 600-grit silicon carbide and the bonding areas demarcated with plastic band matrices (3mm/5umm),fixed in position by the means of a rigid aluminium/teflon mold. The demarcated dentin surfaces were treated with AP, SMP and V as directed by the manufacturers and freshly mixed Dispersalloy amalgam condensed into the plastic matrices. The specimens were then stored in 37°C for 24 hours. The matrices were removed; the shear bond tests performed in an Instron Universal Testing Machine at a cross-head speed of 0.5mm/sec.; and the results expressed in MPa. Some failures were examined in stereomicroscopy. The data were analysed by one-way analysis of variance, Mean failure loads and S.D, were: AP, 2,21 ± 1,5; SMP, 0,33±0,8 e V, 2,63± l,6. Tire shear bond strengths of AP vs V were not significantly different (p>0,05) and SMP was significantly different (p0,05) e diferentes do SMP (p<0,05). As fraturas foram predominantemente adesivas na interface amálgama/resina para o SMP (73,34%) e consideradas mistas, do amálgama/sistema adesivo, para o AP (80%) e para o V (93,36%

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of three luting agents : Resin Cement (3M), Variolink (Vivadent) e Fuji Plus (GC Coorp.); in bonding porcelain (Fortune, Williams) and glass polymer (Artglass, Kulzer) discs. To bovine dentin. The facial surfaces of 120 bovine incisors, previously mounted in self-cured resin, were ground flat on wet 80-grit SiC paper. Dentin surfaces exposed had their final finish accomplished by grinding on wet 240, 400 and 600-grit SiC paper. The specimens were randomly assigned to test groups of ten samples. Onto the pretreated dentin surfaces, the discs (5mm diameter,3mm height) were cemented Jhey were seated to a standardized luting thickness of 40µ. Each two groups were cemented with the same luting agent, and one of them shear tested after 24 h and the other after 180 days in an Instron machine. The bond strength data obtained were analysed by ANO VA and the Tukey test, 5%. The mode of failure was classified. The shear test results indicated significant differences among the luting agents: Variolink II (6, 02MPa), Fuji Plus (1 1,20MPa) and with the highest shear bond stregth accomplished when the 3M Resin Cement was the luting agent (14,16MPa). Higher values were also obtained with the porcelain discs and after the 180 days storage period. Mode of failure varied among the groups, with predominance of mixed fractures at the tooth/cement interface, and with a few cohesive porcelain and glass polymer fractures. It can be concluded that the Resin Cement (3M) and the procedure used offer reasonable strength on the porcelain and dentin siteO objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a efetividade de três cimentos: Cimento Resinoso (3M), Variolink (Vivadent) e Fuji Plus (GC Coorp.); na adesão de discos de porcelana (Fortune,Williams) e de um polímero de vidro (Artglass, Kulzer), à dentina bovina.

To evaluate the influence of different whitening protocols on the efficacy of 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) tooth whitening and gel pH and concentration. Eighty-four enamel/dentin discs from bovine incisors were used. The baseline color was measured with a spectrophotometer. Two sessions of in-office whitening with 35% HP were performed under different protocols: G1: 3 applications of HP (10 min each) per session; G2: 1 application of 30 min per session; G3: 1 application of 40 min per session, with no gel replenishment within session for groups 2 and 3. HP titration and pH evaluation at baseline, after 10, 30, and 40 min were also performed. The final color was measured 24 h after the 1st and 2nd whitening sessions. Data were submitted to Repeated Measures ANOVA and Tukey's test. For color evaluation, no differences were observed among groups after two sessions. HP titration showed no drop on concentration after 10, 30, or 40 min. The pH was 5.54 at baseline and 5.41 after 40 min. Replenishment or extended application time of in-office whitening gel does not affect gel pH and concentration, a fact that supports the similar effectiveness of whitening observed among the tested protocols

Background/purpose: The primeval evaluation of the properties of composite resins with different compositions that impact clinical behavior is very important in guiding use in clinical settings. The aim of this study was to evaluate color stability (ΔE) and Knoop microhardness (KHN) of composite resins containing different compositions. Materials and methods: Forty-five disks were made composite resins: Filtek Z350 XT/3MESPE and Beautifill II/SHOFU and divided into 3 subgroups: Control - immersed in artificial saliva; OB – brushing with Oral B 3D White; CT - brushing with Colgate Total 12. The OB and CT groups had the disks brushed daily with 120 cycles after immersion in coffee solution (10 min) for a period of 30 days. ΔE and KHN was obtained at baseline and after the treatments. Data were analyzed ANOVA and Tukey tests (p < 0.05). Results: ANOVA revealed significant differences for ΔE and KHN. ΔE: the highest mean was observed in Beautifil II composite resin group, which differed significantly from Z350 group. For the Beautifil II, the treatments were significantly different from each other. For the Z350, the control group showed significant differences in relation to OB e CT groups. KHN: the highest mean was observed in Z350 group, which differed significantly from Beautifil II group. For Z350, the control group showed significant differences in relation to OB e CT groups. For Beautifil II, the treatments did not differ significantly among themselves. Conclusion: The composite resin containing fluoride in the composition showed higher color alteration (ΔE) and lower Knoop microhardness (KHN), thus demonstrating that composition is an important factor in the clinical performance of esthetic restorative materials.
