    Thomas Hudspeth, born in 1761, was a surveyor and school master at Bowsden, Northumberland, U.K. In 1791 he married Alice Fox-Maule. Some time after 1822 he, together with four of his eight children, Elizabeth, Catherine, James and Alexander, joined his eldest son John Maule at 'Bowsden ' , Jericho, V.D.L. John Maule Hudspeth, 1792-1837, after medical training undertook work as ship's surgeon, finally with the Hudson Bay Company in 1815. In 1817 he started practice in Bowsden, married Mary Lowrey, an old school mate in 1819 and emigrated to V.D.L. in 1822. He had an appointment as Assistant Colonial Surgeon but his major interest was his farming property 'Bowsden'. Also includes letters from Lt.Governor Sorell, J.Scott, Colonial Surgeon, Major T.     W.H.Hudspeth (1874-1952) son of Rev. Canon Francis Hudspeth and grandson of John Maule Hudspeth (1792-1837), graduated B.A. at Melbourne University and was called to the Tasmanian Bar in 1898. He practised for 30 years in partnership with N.E.Lewis and Tetley Gant. For many years he served on the Council of the Royal Society of Tasmania. His papers consist of notes on various aspects of the history of Tasmania and drafts of articles, written mainly between 1935 and 1951. Royal Society RS.

    The diary of John Maule Hudspeth, 1792-1837, who after medical training undertook work as a ship's surgeon, was with the Hudsons Bay Company in 1815, and in 1817 started practice in Bowsden. He married Mary Lowrey in 1819 and emigrated to van Diemen's land in 1822. He was appointed Assistant Colonial Surgeon but his major interest was his farming property 'Bowsden' at Jericho. The diary outlines the voyage of Dr. Hudspeth and his wife to Van Diemen's Land on the 'Minerva' and his arrival and settlement at 'Bowsden', Jericho. It includes an account of his choice of a place to settle with the help of Major Bell, his grant of 600 acres, planting potatoes and cabbages, his appointment as medical officer and deputy constable, erecting a hut, making bricks and clearing ground for his garden at 'Bowsden'.
