Atmospheric new particle formation from sulfuric acid and amines in a Chinese megacity

Atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) is an important global phenomenon that is nevertheless sensitive to ambient conditions. According to both observation and theoretical arguments, NPF usually requires a relatively high sulfuric acid (H2SO4) concentration to promote the formation of new particles and a low preexisting aerosol loading to minimize the sink of new particles. We investigated NPF in Shanghai and were able to observe both precursor vapors (H2SO4) and initial clusters at a molecular level in a megacity. High NPF rates were observed to coincide with several familiar markers suggestive of H2SO4-dimethylamine (DMA)water (H2O) nucleation, including sulfuric acid dimers and H2SO4-DMA clusters. In a cluster kinetics simulation, the observed concentration of sulfuric acid was high enough to explain the particle growth to similar to 3 nanometers under the very high condensation sink, whereas the subsequent higher growth rate beyond this size is believed to result fromthe added contribution of condensing organic species. These findings will help in understanding urban NPF and its air quality and climate effects, as well as in formulating policies to mitigate secondary particle formation in China.Peer reviewe

MicroRNA Expression Analysis: Clinical Advantage of Propranolol Reveals Key MicroRNAs in Myocardial Infarction

BACKGROUND: As playing important roles in gene regulation, microRNAs (miRNAs) are believed as indispensable involvers in the pathogenesis of myocardial infarction (MI) that causes significant morbidity and mortality. Working on a hypothesis that modulation of only some key members in the miRNA superfamily could benefit ischemic heart, we proposed a microarray based network biology approach to identify them with the recognized clinical effect of propranolol as a prompt. METHODS: A long-term MI model of rat was established in this study. The microarray technology was applied to determine the global miRNA expression change intervened by propranolol. Multiple network analyses were sequentially applied to evaluate the regulatory capacity, efficiency and emphasis of the miRNAs which dysexpression in MI were significantly reversed by propranolol. RESULTS: Microarray data analysis indicated that long-term propranolol administration caused 18 of the 31 dysregulated miRNAs in MI undergoing reversed expression, implying that intentional modulation of miRNA expression might show favorable effects for ischemic heart. Our network analysis identified that, among these miRNAs, the prime players in MI were miR-1, miR-29b and miR-98. Further finding revealed that miR-1 focused on regulation of myocyte growth, yet miR-29b and miR-98 stressed on fibrosis and inflammation, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our study illustrates how a combination of microarray technology and functional protein network analysis can be used to identify disease-related key miRNAs

Abstract In this commentary, we briefly introduce the importance of metabolic reprogramming in non‐small celllung cancer (NSCLC) and the role of aberrant glycolysis processes intumorigenesis and metastasis. We further summarize the regulation of deubiquitylation modification on glycolysis‐related kinases in this system. Andwe discusse the major discovery the research by He Yuanming et al. published in Clinical and Translational Medicine.Their study demonstrates targeting the USP7‐c‐Abl‐HK2 axis represents a promising therapeutic strategt for NSCLC

MicroRNAs in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: involvement in pathogenesis and potential use in diagnosis and therapeutics

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of phylogenetically conserved, non-coding short RNAs, 19–22 nt in length which suppress protein expression through base-pairing with the 3′-untranslated region of target mRNAs. miRNAs have been found to participate in cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive, and high lethality fibrotic lung disease for which currently there is no effective treatment. Some miRNAs have been reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis. In this review, we discuss the role of miRNAs in the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of IPF

    One-pot aqueous synthesis of cysteine-capped CdTe/CdS core-shell nanowires

Highly fluorescent cysteine-capped CdTe/CdS core-shell nanowires were successfully synthesized by reacting CdCl2 with NaHTe in aqueous solution under refluxing at 100 °C for 140 min. On increasing the reaction time from 10 to 140 min, CdTe/CdS nanocrystals gradually grew into nanorods and eventually completely evolved into nanowires. The nanowires have amino and carboxyl functional groups on their surfaces and can be well dispersed in aqueous solution. The as-prepared CdTe/CdS nanowires show a fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 7.25 % due to the unique nature of cysteine and the formation of a CdS shell on the surface of the CdTe core, they have a narrower diameter distribution (d = ~5 nm) and a length in the range of 175-275 nm, and their aspect ratio is between 1/35 and 1/55

The Synthesis and Characterization of Hydroxyapatite-β-Alanine Modified by Grafting Polymerization of γ-Benzyl-L-glutamate-N-carboxyanhydride

In this study, hydroxyapatite (HAP) was surface-modified by the addition of β-alanine (β-Ala), and the ring-opening polymerization of γ-benzyl-L-glutamate-N-carboxy-anhydride (BLG-NCA) was subsequently initiated. HAP containing surface poly-γ-benzyl-L-glutamates (PBLG) was successfully prepared in this way. With the increase of PBLG content in HAP-PBLG, the solubility of HAP-PBLG increased gradually and it was ultimately soluble in chloroform. HAP-PLGA with surface carboxyl groups was obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of HAP-PBLG. In the process of HAP modification, the morphology changes from rod to sheet and from flake to needle. The effect of BLG-NCA concentration on the character of hydroxyapatite-β-alanine-poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate) (HAP-PBLG) was investigated. The existence of amino acids on the HAP surfaces was confirmed in the resulting Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. The resulting powder X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that the crystallinity of HAP decreased when the ratio of BLG-NCA/HAP-NH2 increased to 20/1. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that the particle size of HAP-PBLG decreased significantly and that the resulting particles appeared less agglomerated relative to that of the HAP-NH2 crystals. Furthermore, 1H-NMR spectra and FTIR spectra revealed that hydroxyapatite-β-alanine-poly (L-glutamic acid) (HAP-PLGA) was able to successfully bear carboxylic acid groups on its side chains
