Vastauksista kävi ilmi, että työilmapiiriä voitaisiin parantaa avoimella keskustelulla (15,8 %), tiedonkulun parantamisella (10,5 %), yhteisillä asioilla (18,4 %) ja henkilökuntaa lisäämällä (18,4 %).The purpose of this bachelor`s thesis was to find out how the nursing personnel cope at the work in long-term institutional care. The sub-areas in work wellbeing that were dealt with were managing at work and work atmosphere. The research problems were to find out what kind of work atmosphere there was on the wards, how nursing personnel coped at work and how wellbeing at work could be developed. The study was carried out on three long-term wards. The study was participated by 38 nurses of which 13 (34,2 %) were registered nurses and 25 (65,8 % ) practical/enrolled nurses.
The research was carried out with a structured questionnaire, which included also open-ended questions. The structured questions were analyzed with Microsoft Excel 2007 –program and the responses to the open-ended questions were formed into categories. The research was quantitative.
The results indicate that most of the staff felt that the work atmosphere was fairly good. The flow of information was rather good, the cooperation among the nurses worked and the staff was committed to work. All in all, the staff felt that they were doing fine. Work atmosphere (84,2 %), cooperation and interaction among the staff (78,4 %) and the interesting aspects of the work (39,5 %) had the biggest impact on coping at work among the staff. Support from co-workers, general appreciation of the work and getting feedback were important things to the staff. When asked about irregular working hours, responses were divided into two separate groups. Those who worked overtime mainly felt that working overtime was very loading. The responses also revealed that work atmosphere could be improved by open communication (15,8 %), better flow of information (10,5 %), by having common activities (18,4 %) and more staff (18,4 %)
