The Focal-Plane Polarimeter (FPP) for the Big-Bite Spectrometer van den Berg (Nucl Instr. and Meth. B 99 (1995) 637ff) at the KVI requires the read-out of four large-area MWPCs and two VDCs with 3872 wires in-total. The EUROSUPERNOVA collaboration (SNOVA) developed a digital 16 channel preamplifier front-end board, housing two amplifier-shaper-discriminatorchips ASD-8 B. The main features of this board are a fast single-wire readout, a high integration density, a low power consumption and compatibility to common instrumentation standards; The board represents the first successfully running application of the ASD-8 for wire chamber readout. An experiment has been performed at KVI to measure vector analyzing powers and differential cross sections of the D((p) over right arrow pd) reaction as a function of incident beam energy. The measurements have been performed so far at several kinetic energies of the incoming particle between 108 MeV and 170 MeV. In this contribution, the preliminary results for the vector analyzing power A(y) will be presented

AbstractSpin–isospin excitations of the medium-mass nucleus 58Co were studied using the (n,p)-type (d,2He) charge-exchange reaction at an incident energy Ed=170 MeV and small scattering angles. The achieved energy resolution of 130 keV, full width at half maximum, allowed the extraction of Gamow–Teller strength to 13 peaks at excitation energies lower than 4.1 MeV in the residual nucleus 58Co and is consistent with the results of a multipole-decomposition analysis. The identification of Gamow–Teller transitions is possible by comparison of the measured cross sections with DWBA calculations. The results are used to discuss the relevance of the Gamow–Teller strength distribution at low excitation energy with regard to electron-capture rates used in calculations for the final stage of a massive star

A DSP-based Readout and Online Processing System for a new Focal-plane Polarimeter at AGOR

A Focal-Plane Polarimeter (FPP) for the large acceptance Big-Bite Spectrometer (BBS) at AGOR using a novel readout architecture has been commissioned at the KVI Groningen. The instrument is optimized for medium-energy polarized proton scattering near or at 0 degrees. For the handling of the high counting rates at extreme forward angles and for the suppression of small-angle scattering in the graphite analyzer, a high-performance data processing DSP system connecting to the LeCroy FERA and PCOS ECL bus architecture has been made operational and tested successfully. Details of the system and the functions of the various electronic components are described. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.</p

High resolution studies of low lying GT strength using the (d,He-2) reaction and its impact on electron-capture rates in stellar environments

Gamow-Teller transitions in fp-shell nuclei have been studied using the Ni-58(d, He-2) charge exchange reaction at an incident energy of 170 MeV and forward angles. The measurements have been performed at AGOR using the Big-Bite Spectrometer and the EuroSuperNova focal-plane detection system. The unprecedented energy resolution of about 130 keV FWHM for excitations in the residual nucleus Co-58 allowed for the first time the extraction of single transitions in the beta(+) direction up to about 4 MeV excitation. The impact on electron-capture rates in astrophysical environments has been evaluated
