Voyageuse suspecte. L’expérience d’une chercheuse porteuse de stigmates

This article deals with my condition as a researcher with stigmata and my difficulties in entering my doctoral research field, conducted in the West Bank between 2011 and 2014, and dedicated to the preservation and the enhancement of Palestinian urban heritage. Through an analysis of the crossing of Ben-Gurion airport, a dreaded passage where arbitrariness and uncertainty are at stake, which can lead to interrogations with Israeli security agents, I will first present the anticipated or spontaneous micro-strategies that I set up in order to escape categorizations at the airport. Then I will develop two passages about the interview I had to undergo, with the fear that my past activist involvement would be discovered and that I would be expelled. The risk of my research being interrupted if I no longer had access to it, led me to make methodological choices, between precaution and resignation, taking care both to protect myself and not to harm the respondents

Heritage, cultural and touristic making in a space of tension : the case of Palestinian cities

Cette recherche doctorale soulève l’enjeu politique et territorial de la patrimonialisation dans un espace en tension. A travers la confrontation d’expériences entre trois villes palestiniennes (Naplouse, Bethléem et Ramallah), nous avons montré comment la patrimonialisation et le développement culturel et touristique sont intégrés dans des stratégies de résilience territoriale. Les acteurs de la fabrique patrimoniale, culturelle et touristique palestinienne cherchent à maintenir et à renforcer la cohésion territoriale menacée par la fragmentation spatiale engendrée par l’occupation et la colonisation israélienne. La patrimonialisation des centres historiques est un moyen d’améliorer les conditions de vie des habitants. Elle est un révélateur des capacités des acteurs palestiniens, soutenus financièrement et techniquement par des acteurs internationaux, à résister aux pressions de l’occupation et à faire face à ses multiples incertitudes et perturbations. Elle a pour finalité la récupération du territoire palestinien par une résistance par l’habiter, qui vise à maintenir les habitants souvent très modestes dans les centres historiques et à en attirer de nouveaux. La mise en valeur du patrimoine vise aussi à participer au développement culturel et touristique de ces quartiers anciens pour donner la possibilité aux Palestiniens d’une nouvelle trajectoire de développement social et économique. Cependant, malgré les efforts déployés pour améliorer le cadre urbain, l’offre touristique et culturelle, et rendre les centres historiques palestiniens plus attractifs, cela n’a pas permis, pour l’instant, de modifier significativement le développement économique des Territoires Palestiniens Occupés.This doctoral research raises political and territorial issue of heritage value in a space of tension. Through the confrontation of experiences between three Palestinian cities (Nablus, Bethlehem and Ramallah), we showed how heritage process, cultural and tourism development are integrated into territorial resilience strategies. Palestinian skateholders of heritage, cultural and touristic making are trying to maintain and strengthen territorial cohesion, threatened by spatial fragmentation caused by the occupation and the Israeli settlements. The heritage process in the historic centers is a way to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants. It reveals the capacity of Palestinian stakeholders, financially and technically supported by international stakeholders, to resist the pressures of the occupation, and cope with its many uncertainties and disturbances. Its purpose is the recovery of the Palestinian territory by an inhabit resistance, in order to maintain inhabitants with low income within the historic centers and to attract new ones. Heritage development aims also to participate in the cultural and tourist development of these old neighborhoods and give to the Palestinians the possibility of a new path for social and economic development. However, despite efforts to improve urban environment, tourism and cultural offer, and Palestinian historical centers attractiveness, this did not participate to economical development significantly change of occupied Palestinian territories so far
