    Fault detection of redundant systems based on B-spline neural network

    The fault detection and isolation of redundant sensor systems based on B-spline neural networks is presented in this paper. The network is trained using an algorithm with an adaptive learning rate. To further save computation time, the residual vector is transformed from a multivariate B-spline function to an univariate B-spline function. The detection of abrupt and drifting faults using the proposed method is discusses.     State estimation with measurement error compensation using neural network

    For a system with redundant sensors, the estimated state from the Kalman filter is biased if sensor mounting error existed. To remove this bias, the mounting errors must be compensated first before using the Kalman filter. It is shown that only the projection part of the sensors errors in the measurement space needs to be compensated. If the state of a system is unavailable, a neurofuzzy network can be used to estimate the compensation term. This method is simpler, as it does not require a model for the errors as that proposed in [2]. A sub-optimal Kalman filter with measurement compensation that restrains each row of the Kalman gain matrix to be in the measurement space is also derived.     B-spline recurrent neural network and its application to modelling of non-linear dynamic systems

    A new recurrent neural network based on B-spline function approximation is presented. The network can be easily trained and its training converges more quickly than that for other recurrent neural networks. Moreover, an adaptive weight updating algorithm for the recurrent network is proposed. It can speed up the training process of the network greatly and its learning speed is more quickly than existing algorithms, e.g., back-propagation algorithm. Examples are presented comparing the adaptive weight updating algorithm and the constant learning rate method, and illustrating its application to modelling of nonlinear dynamic system.published_or_final_versio

    Nonlinear observer design with unknown nonlinearity via B-spline network approach

    A novel approach is proposed to the state estimation of a class of nonlinear systems which consist of known linear part and unknown nonlinear part. A linear observer is first designed then a nonlinear compensation term in the nonlinear observer is determined using the proposed “deconvolution method”. The B-spline neural network is used to model the estimated compensation term. Three simulation examples are given to compare the effectiveness of the proposed approach and some analytical approaches.published_or_final_versio

    Performance analysis of a linear motor with HTS bulk magnets for driving a prototype HTS maglev vehicle

    This paper presents the performance analysis of a linear synchronous motor which employs high-temperature superconducting (HTS) bulk magnets on the mover and normal copper windings on the stator. The linear motor is designed to drive a prototype HTS maglev vehicle in which the mover is suspended by the levitation force between HTS bulks on the mover and permanent magnets on the ground. Finite element magnetic field analysis is conducted to calculate the major parameters of the linear motor and an equation is derived to calculate the electromagnetic thrust force.     Medium-frequency-link power conversion for high power density renewable energy systems

    Recent advances in solid-state semiconductors and magnetic materials have provided the impetus for medium frequency-link based medium voltage power conversion systems, which would be a possible solution to reducing the weight and volume of renewable power generation systems. To verify this new concept, in this paper, a laboratory prototype of 1.73 kVA medium-frequency-link power conversion system is developed for a scaled down 1 kV grid applications. The design and implementation of the prototyping, test platform, and the experimental results are analyzed and discussed. It is expected that the proposed new technology would have great potential for future renewable and smart grid applications. © 2013 IEEE

    B-H relations of magnetorheological fluid under 2-D rotating magnetic field excitation

    This paper presents the investigation of the B-H relations of a magnetorheological (MR) fluid under one-dimensional (1-D) alternating and two-dimensional (2-D) rotating magnetic field excitations where B is magnetic flux density and H is magnetic field strength. The measurement is carried out by using a single sheet tester with an MR fluid sample. The measurement principle and structure of the testing system are described. The calibration of the B and H sensing coils are also reported. The relations between B and H on the MR fluid sample under 2-D rotating magnetic field excitations have been measured and compared with the results under 1-D excitations showing that the B-H relations under 2-D excitations are significantly different from the 1-D case. These data would be useful for design and analysis of MR smart structures like MR dampers. © 2013 IEEE

    High temperature superconducting (HTS) linear synchronous motor (LSM) integrated with HTS magnetic levitation system, can realize self-levitation and self-guidance without any sliding friction, which will have important applications in many fields such as electromagnetic aircraft launch system, maglev transportation. This paper presents the design and electromagnetic analysis of a HTS LSM, which is levitated by a magnetic levitation system consisting of HTS bulkspermanent magnet (PM) guideways. Numerical analysis and magnetic field finite element analysis (FEA) methods are applied to analyze the thrust, levitation and guidance force characteristics, and the electromagnetic performance of HTS LSM under no-load and load situations are studied with the analysis results are given. Finally, the primary motor running testing results are provided

    Cu-7Cr-0.07Ag alloys were prepared by casting and directional solidification, from which deformation-processed in situ composites were prepared by thermo-mechanical processing. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and electrical properties were investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electronic microscopy, tensile testing, and a micro-ohmmeter. The second-phase Cr grains of the directional solidification Cu-7Cr-0.07Ag in situ composite were parallel to the drawing direction and were finer, which led to a higher tensile strength and a better combination of properties
