Finite element simulation of powder compaction via shock consolidation using gas-gun system
Shock consolidation is a promising method for consolidation of nanocrystalline metallic powders since it can prevent grain growth of nanopowders during the process due to very short processing time. However, internal cracks often occurs in powder compacts during the shock consolidation process. In this paper, finite element simulations showed that reflected tensile wave causes spall phenomena resulting internal crack of powder compaction during shock compaction process. To reduce spall phenomena, FEM simulation with changing compaction die's geometry was performed to find out relationship between shape and tensile wave intensity. Based on FEM results, new compaction die was designed and bulk nanocrystalline Cu are obtained using new compaction die. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.open1111Ysciescopu
The Astrophysics of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays
The origin of the highest energy cosmic rays is still unknown. The discovery
of their sources will reveal the workings of the most energetic astrophysical
accelerators in the universe. Current observations show a spectrum consistent
with an origin in extragalactic astrophysical sources. Candidate sources range
from the birth of compact objects to explosions related to gamma-ray bursts or
to events in active galaxies. We discuss the main effects of propagation from
cosmologically distant sources including interactions with cosmic background
radiation and magnetic fields. We examine possible acceleration mechanisms
leading to a survey of candidate sources and their signatures. New questions
arise from an observed hint of sky anisotropies and an unexpected evolution of
composition indicators. Future observations may reach the necessary sensitivity
to achieve charged particle astronomy and to observe ultrahigh energy photons
and neutrinos, which will further illuminate the workings of the universe at
these extreme energies. In addition to fostering a new understanding of
high-energy astrophysical phenomena, the study of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays
can constrain the structure of the Galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields
as well as probe particle interactions at energies orders of magnitude higher
than achieved in terrestrial accelerators.Comment: Draft of solicited review article; 44 pages and 12 figures; Final

High capacity cathode materials for Li-S batteries
To enhance the stability of sulfur cathode for a high energy lithium-sulfur battery, sulfur-activated carbon (S-AC) composite was prepared by encapsulating sulfur into micropores of activated carbon using a solution-based processing technique. In the analysis using the prepared specimen of S-AC composite by the focused ion beam (FIB) technique, the elemental sulfur exists in a highly dispersed state inside the micropores of activated carbon, which has a large surface area and a narrow pore distribution. The S-AC composite was characterized through X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). A lithium-sulfur cell using the S-AC composite has a high first discharge capacity over 800 mA h g -1 S even at a high current density such as 2C (3200 mA g -1 S) and has good cycleability around 500 mA h g-1 S discharge capacity at the 50th cycle at the same current density. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry
Effect of liquid spreading due to nano/microstructures on the critical heat flux during pool boiling
It is well known that nanoparticles deposited on a heating surface during nanofluid boiling can change the characteristics of the heating surface and increase the critical heat flux (CHF) dramatically. We considered a new approach to investigate the nanoparticle surface effect on CHF enhancement using surfaces modified with artificial micro/nanostructures similar to deposited nanoparticle structures. We examined the effect of the surface wettability and liquid spreading ability on the CHF. The results demonstrated that the CHF enhancement on the modified surfaces was a consequence of both the improved surface wettability and the liquid spreading ability of the artificial micro/nanostructures. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.open11102116Nsciescopu
CAPTCHaStar! A novel CAPTCHA based on interactive shape discovery
Over the last years, most websites on which users can register (e.g., email
providers and social networks) adopted CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public
Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) as a countermeasure against
automated attacks. The battle of wits between designers and attackers of
CAPTCHAs led to current ones being annoying and hard to solve for users, while
still being vulnerable to automated attacks.
In this paper, we propose CAPTCHaStar, a new image-based CAPTCHA that relies
on user interaction. This novel CAPTCHA leverages the innate human ability to
recognize shapes in a confused environment. We assess the effectiveness of our
proposal for the two key aspects for CAPTCHAs, i.e., usability, and resiliency
to automated attacks. In particular, we evaluated the usability, carrying out a
thorough user study, and we tested the resiliency of our proposal against
several types of automated attacks: traditional ones; designed ad-hoc for our
proposal; and based on machine learning. Compared to the state of the art, our
proposal is more user friendly (e.g., only some 35% of the users prefer current
solutions, such as text-based CAPTCHAs) and more resilient to automated
attacks.Comment: 15 page
Physiological Functions of the COPI Complex in Higher Plants
COPI vesicles are essential to the retrograde transport of proteins in the early secretory pathway. The COPI coatomer complex consists of seven subunits, termed alpha-, beta-, beta'-, gamma-, delta-, epsilon-, and zeta-COP, in yeast and mammals. Plant genomes have homologs of these subunits, but the essentiality of their cellular functions has hampered the functional characterization of the subunit genes in plants. Here we have employed virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) and dexamethasone (DEX)-inducible RNAI of the COPI subunit genes to study the in vivo functions of the COPI coatomer complex in plants. The beta'-, gamma-, and delta-COP subunits localized to the Golgi as GFP-fusion proteins and interacted with each other in the Golgi. Silencing of beta'-, gamma-, and delta-COP by VIGS resulted in growth arrest and acute plant death in Nicotiana benthamiana, with the affected leaf cells exhibiting morphological markers of programmed cell death. Depletion of the COPI subunits resulted in disruption of the Golgi structure and accumulation of autolysosome-like structures in earlier stages of gene silencing. In tobacco BY-2 cells, DEX-inducible RNAi of beta'-COP caused aberrant cell plate formation during cytokinesis. Collectively, these results suggest that COPI vesicles are essential to plant growth and survival by maintaining the Golgi apparatus and modulating cell plate formation.1196Ysciescopu
A Novel Role of Three Dimensional Graphene Foam to Prevent Heater Failure during Boiling
We report a novel boiling heat transfer (NBHT) in reduced graphene oxide (RGO) suspended in water (RGO colloid) near critical heat flux (CHF), which is traditionally the dangerous limitation of nucleate boiling heat transfer because of heater failure. When the heat flux reaches the maximum value (CHF) in RGO colloid pool boiling, the wall temperature increases gradually and slowly with an almost constant heat flux, contrary to the rapid wall temperature increase found during water pool boiling. The gained time by NBHT would provide the safer margin of the heat transfer and the amazing impact on the thermal system as the first report of graphene application. In addition, the CHF and boiling heat transfer performance also increase. This novel boiling phenomenon can effectively prevent heater failure because of the role played by the self-assembled three-dimensional foam-like graphene network (SFG).open2
Serration phenomena occurring during tensile tests of three high-manganese TWinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steels
In this study, the serration phenomena of two high-Mn TWIP steels and an Al-added TWIP steel were examined by tensile tests, and were explained by the microstructural evolution including formation of localized Portevin-Le Chatelier deformation bands and twins. In stress-strain curves of the high-Mn steels, serrations started in a fine and short shape, and their height and periodic interval increased with increasing strain, whereas the Al-added steel did not show any serrations. According to digital images of strain rate and strain obtained from a vision strain gage system, deformation bands were initially formed at the upper region of the gage section, and moved downward along the tensile loading direction. The time when the band formation started was matched with the time when one serration occurred in the stress-time curve. This serration behavior was generally explained by dynamic strain aging, which was closely related with the formation of deformation bands. Co-design and robots: A case study of a robot dog for aging people
© Springer International Publishing AG 2016. The day-to-day experiences of aging citizens differ significantly from young, technologically savvy engineers. Yet, well-meaning engineers continue to design technologies for aging citizens, informed by skewed stereotypes of aging without deep engagements from these users. This paper describes a co-design project based on the principles of Participatory Design that sought to provide aging people with the capacity to co-design technologies that suit their needs. The project combined the design intuitions of both participants and designers, on equal footing, to produce a companion robot in the form of a networked robotic dog. Besides evaluating a productive approach that empowers aging people in the process of co-designing and evaluating technologies for themselves, this paper presents a viable solution that is playful and meaningful to these elderly people; capable of enhancing their independence, social agency and well-being
Molecular and genetic characterization of OSH6 (Oryza sativa Homeobox 6) using dissociation (Ds) insertion mutant rice
Genetic studies of dissociation (Ds) insertion mutant rice plants indicated that ectopic expression of truncated OSH6 (Oryza sativa Homeobox 6) mRNA may be responsible for the mutant phenotype of knotted leaf formation at the peduncle. Additionally, ectopic expression of truncated OSH6 mRNA in the OSH6-Ds mutant plant led to alteration of other homeobox genes including OSH15 in leaf tissues. The OSH6-Ds mutant plant exhibited altered expression of more than 118 genes on a 22K rice microarray in comparison with wild type plants. Of these genes, 20 were up- or down-regulated in both OSH6-Ds and OSH6-overexpressing (OSH6-35S) plants. Especially, OsDof3 was not expressed in floral organs, but was present in the panicles of both OSH6-Ds and OSH6-35S plants. It is assumed that truncated OSH6 transcript might be actively involved in the gene expression during organ development. The genetic relationship between OSH6-Ds and OSH15 suggested that the formation of the extra leaf is independent of OSH6-Ds or OSH15 expression. These results suggest that truncated OSH6 mRNA influences lateral organ growth and development by regulating the expression of specific gene groups.Key words: Oryza sativa Homeobox 6 (OSH6) genes, Ds insertion lines, OSH15 mutant
