Current and vorticity auto correlation functions in open microwave billiards
Using the equivalence between the quantum-mechanical probability density in a
quantum billiard and the Poynting vector in the corresponding microwave system,
current distributions were studied in a quantum dot like cavity, as well as in
a Robnik billiard with lambda=0.4, and an introduced ferrite cylinder. Spatial
auto correlation functions for currents and vorticity were studied and compared
with predictions from the random-superposition-of-plane-waves hypothesis. In
addition different types of vortex neighbour spacing distributions were

The correlation potential in density functional theory at the GW-level: spherical atoms
As part of a project to obtain better optical response functions for nano
materials and other systems with strong excitonic effects we here calculate the
exchange-correlation (XC) potential of density-functional theory (DFT) at a
level of approximation which corresponds to the dynamically- screened-exchange
or GW approximation. In this process we have designed a new numerical method
based on cubic splines which appears to be superior to other techniques
previously applied to the "inverse engineering problem" of DFT, i.e., the
problem of finding an XC potential from a known particle density. The
potentials we obtain do not suffer from unphysical ripple and have, to within a
reasonable accuracy, the correct asymptotic tails outside localized systems.
The XC potential is an important ingredient in finding the particle-conserving
excitation energies in atoms and molecules and our potentials perform better in
this regard as compared to the LDA potential, potentials from GGA:s, and a DFT
potential based on MP2 theory.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure
Iron Emission in the z=6.4 Quasar SDSS J114816.64+525150.3
We present near-infrared J and K-band spectra of the z = 6.4 quasar SDSS
J114816.64+525150.3 obtained with the NIRSPEC spectrograph at the Keck-II
telescope, covering the rest-frame spectral regions surrounding the C IV 1549
and Mg II 2800 emission lines. The iron emission blend at rest wavelength
2900-3000 A is clearly detected and its strength appears nearly
indistinguishable from that of typical quasars at lower redshifts. The Fe II /
Mg II ratio is also similar to values found for lower-redshift quasars,
demonstrating that there is no strong evolution in Fe/alpha broad-line emission
ratios even out to z=6.4. In the context of current models for iron enrichment
from Type Ia supernovae, this implies that the SN Ia progenitor stars formed at
z > 10. We apply the scaling relations of Vestergaard and of McLure & Jarvis to
estimate the black hole mass from the widths of the C IV and Mg II emission
lines and the ultraviolet continuum luminosity. The derived mass is in the
range (2-6)x10^9 solar masses, with an additional uncertainty of a factor of 3
due to the intrinsic scatter in the scaling relations. This result is in
agreement with the previous mass estimate of 3x10^9 solar masses by Willott,
McLure, & Jarvis, and supports their conclusion that the quasar is radiating
close to its Eddington luminosity.Comment: To appear in ApJ Letter

In this paper, we define lower dimensional volumes of spin manifolds with
boundary. We compute the lower dimensional volume for
5-dimensional and 6-dimensional spin manifolds with boundary and we also get
the Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem in this case
Hitchhiking transport in quasi-one-dimensional systems
In the conventional theory of hopping transport the positions of localized
electronic states are assumed to be fixed, and thermal fluctuations of atoms
enter the theory only through the notion of phonons. On the other hand, in 1D
and 2D lattices, where fluctuations prevent formation of long-range order, the
motion of atoms has the character of the large scale diffusion. In this case
the picture of static localized sites may be inadequate. We argue that for a
certain range of parameters, hopping of charge carriers among localization
sites in a network of 1D chains is a much slower process than diffusion of the
sites themselves. Then the carriers move through the network transported along
the chains by mobile localization sites jumping occasionally between the
chains. This mechanism may result in temperature independent mobility and
frequency dependence similar to that for conventional hopping.Comment: a few typos correcte
Navier-Stokes computations for circulation control airfoils
Navier-Stokes computations of subsonic to transonic flow past airfoils with augmented lift due to rearward jet blowing over a curved trailing edge are presented. The approach uses a spiral grid topology. Solutions are obtained using a Navier-Stokes code which employs an implicit finite difference method, an algebraic turbulence model, and developments which improve stability, convergence, and accuracy. Results are compared against experiments for no jet blowing and moderate jet pressures and demonstrate the capability to compute these complicated flows
Creep-Rupture and Fatigue Behavior of a Notched Oxide/Oxide Ceramic Matrix Composite at Elevated Temperature
The inherent resistance to oxidation of oxide/oxide ceramic matrix composites makes them ideal for aerospace applications that require high temperature and long life under corrosive environments. The ceramic matrix composite (CMC) of interest in the study is the Nextel™720/Alumina (N720/A) which is comprised of an 8-harness satin weave of Nextel™ fibers embedded in an alumina matrix. One of the top applications for N720/A is in the combustion section of a turbine engine. This will require mounting and shaping the material with rivets and possibly sharp edges thereby introducing geometry based stress concentration factors. Sullivan’s research concentrated on the effects of central circular notches with a notch to width ratio (2a/w) of 0.33. This study expands upon his research to include the creep and fatigue response to double edge notch geometry with the same notch to width ratio of 0.33. In short, 12.0 mm wide rectangular specimens with two edge notches of 2 mm depth and 0.15 mm width were subjected to creep and fatigue loading conditions in 1200°C of air. All fracture surfaces were examined by an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Sullivan’s research concluded that specimens with a central circular notch were insensitive to creep but slightly more sensitive to fatigue than unnotched specimens. In contrast, this study showed significant creep and fatigue life reductions for double edge notch specimens
Recommendation domains for pond aquaculture
This publication introduces the methods and results of a research project that has developed a set of decision-support tools to identify places and sets of conditions for which a particular target aquaculture technology is considered feasible and therefore good to promote. The tools also identify the nature of constraints to aquaculture development and thereby shed light on appropriate interventions to realize the potential of the target areas. The project results will be useful for policy planners and decision makers in national, regional and local governments and development funding agencies, aquaculture extension workers in regional and local governments, and researchers in aquaculture systems and rural livelihoods.
