    Concept analysis of impressionability among adolescents and young adults

    Aim: To report a concept analysis of impressionability among adolescents and young adults. Background: Adolescence and young adulthood are critical periods to establish health behaviour. Environmental determinants are associated with youth health risk behaviours. These populations are impressionable to a range of social and physical environmental factors. Design: Concept analysis. Methods: We selected 17 studies to review from Psych INFO, ERIC, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar as well as the University of Virginia library. We did not apply date limits. We included search terms: “adolescent”; “youth”; “young adult”; “impressionability”; and “impressionable.” Results: The defining attributes of impressionability among youths were a state where: (a) one is able to be susceptible to external stimuli; (b) one is incapable of reasonable judgement; and (c) one has a changeability to accept or modify one’s attitude and behaviour.     Renal Toxicity Evaluation and Comparison Between Visipaque (Iodixanol) and Hexabrix (Ioxaglate) in Patients With Renal Insufficiency Undergoing Coronary Angiography The RECOVER Study: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    ObjectivesThis study sought to compare the nephrotoxicity of iodixanol and ioxaglate in patients with renal impairment undergoing coronary angiography.BackgroundIodixanol, a nonionic, dimeric, iso-osmolar contrast medium (IOCM), may be less nephrotoxic than low-osmolar contrast media (LOCM) in high-risk patients.MethodsIn a prospective, randomized trial in 300 adults with creatinine clearance (CrCl) ≤60 ml/min, patients received either iodixanol or ioxaglate and underwent coronary angiography with or without percutaneous coronary intervention. The primary end point was the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) (an increase in serum creatinine [SCr] ≥25% or ≥0.5 mg/dl [≥44.2 μmol/l]). The incidence of CIN in patients with severe renal impairment at baseline (CrCl <30 ml/min) or diabetes and in those receiving large doses (≥140 ml) of contrast medium was also determined.ResultsThe incidence of CIN was significantly lower with iodixanol (7.9%) than with ioxaglate (17.0%; p = 0.021), corresponding to an odds ratio (OR) of CIN of 0.415 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.194 to 0.889) for iodixanol. The incidence of CIN was also significantly lower with iodixanol in patients with severe renal impairment (p = 0.023) or concomitant diabetes (p = 0.041), or in patients given ≥140 ml of contrast media (p = 0.038). Multivariate analysis identified use of ioxaglate (OR 2.65, 95% CI 1.11 to 6.33, p = 0.028), baseline SCr, mg/dl (OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.04 to 3.85, p = 0.038), and left ventricular ejection fraction, % (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.94 to 0.99, p = 0.019) as independent risk factors for CIN.ConclusionsThe IOCM iodixanol was significantly less nephrotoxic than ioxaglate, an ionic, dimeric LOCM.     The relationship between attentional fluctuation and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use

    Attentional bias (AB) has been identified as a cognitive mechanism underlying cigarette use. Recent studies suggest that attentional fluctuation between vigilance and avoidance is an important cognitive deficit related to various psychopathologies. This study aimed to examine the role of AB in cigarette and Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) use in young adults. Results indicated that ENDS users showed greater temporal attentional fluctuation towards ENDS stimuli compared to cigarette users and non-smokers. Attentional fluctuation predicted the ENDS use status. Attentional fluctuation may be a potential risk factor associated with ENDS use among this population

    Assessment of Patient Safety and Cultural Competencies among Senior Baccalaureate Nursing Students

    This descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study examined nursing students&rsquo; educational experiences on self-reported perceptions of patient safety and cultural competence in terms of curriculum content and learning venues. We performed descriptive analyses and a one-way analysis of variance with a sample of senior-year nursing students (N = 249) attending three state universities in the United States. We used the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competency Model, the Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Tool for Nursing Students, and The Cultural Competence Assessment Instrument. Overall, participants reported that patient safety and cultural competencies were addressed in their curricula primarily through classroom activities as opposed to laboratory/simulation or clinical settings. Among the required patient safety knowledge topics, elements of highly reliable organizations were covered the least. For patient safety competency, participants reported higher scores for attitude and lower scores for skill and knowledge. For cultural competency, participants scored much higher for cultural awareness and sensitivity than behavior. There was no statistically significant difference between scores for patient safety and cultural competencies by nursing school. The results support the need for curriculum development to include all important aspects of patient safety and cultural competencies in various teaching/learning venues

    Effect of Addition of Soybean Oil and Gamma-Ray Cross-linking on the Nanoporous HDPE Membrane

    A nanoporous high-density polyethylene (HDPE) membrane was prepared by a wet process. Soybean oil and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) were premixed as codiluents, and gamma-rays were used for the cross-linking of HDPE. The pore volume of the nanoporous HDPE membranes with soybean oil was affected by the extracted amount of oil. The tensile strength of the membrane improved with an increasing absorbed dose up to 60 kGy, but decreased at 80 kGy due to severe degradation. The ionic conductivity of the nanoporous HDPE membrane did not really change with an increasing absorbed dose because the pores had already been formed before the gamma-ray radiation. Finally, the electrochemical stability of the HDPE membrane increased when the absorbed dose increased up to 60 kGy

    Effects of Biochar on Methane Emissions and Crop Yields in East Asian Paddy Fields: A Regional Scale Meta-Analysis

    Biochar emerged as a potential solution to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, though previous studies obtained variable results regarding its effects on methane (CH4) emissions and crop yields. Global meta-analyses were conducted regarding the effectiveness of biochar, though regional meta-analyses are still needed. We performed a meta-analysis of 43 published papers to obtain the central tendency of the response to biochar application in East Asian rice paddies. Biochar application significantly reduced methane emissions while increasing the soil organic carbon (SOC) content and crop yield. We identified the most significant influencing factors on the CH4 emissions, SOC content, and crop yield. Our findings provide a scientific basis for the application of biochar to East Asian rice paddies, as well as to study the effects of biochar application in East Asian rice paddies.     Enhancing the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS films for biomedical applications via hydrothermal treatment

    This paper reports a new biocompatible conductivity enhancement of poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films for biomedical applications. Conductivity of PEDOT:PSS layer was reproducibly from 0.495 to 125.367 S cm(-1) by hydrothermal (HT) treatment. The HT treatment employs water (relative humidity &gt; 80%) and heat (temperature &gt; 61 degrees C) instead of organic solvent doping and post treatments, which can leave undesirable residue. The treatment can be performed using the sterilizing conditions of an autoclave. Additionally, it is possible to simultaneously reduce the electrical resistance, and sterilize the electrode for practical use. The key to conductivity enhancement was the structural rearrangement of PEDOT: PSS, which was determined using atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. It was found that PEDOT inter-bridging occurred as a result of the structural rearrangement. Therefore, the conductivity increased on account of the continuous conductive pathways of the PEDOT chains. To test the biocompatible enhancement technique for biomedical applications, certain demonstrations, such as the monitoring of joint movements and skin temperature, and measuring electrocardiogram signals were conducted with the hydrothermal-treated PEDOT:PSS electrode. This simple, biocompatible treatment exhibited significant potential for use in other biomedical applications as well

    Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly aggressive form of liver cancer with poor prognosis. The lack of reliable biomarkers for early detection and accurate diagnosis and prognosis poses a significant challenge to its effective clinical management. In this study, we investigated the diagnostic and prognostic potential of programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4) expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in HCC. PD-1 and CTLA-4 gene expression was analyzed comparatively using PBMCs collected from HCC patients and healthy individuals. The results revealed higher PD-1 gene expression levels in patients with multifocal tumors, lymphatic invasion, or distant metastasis than those in their control counterparts. However, conventional serum biomarkers of liver function do not exhibit similar correlations. In conclusion, PD-1 gene expression is associated with OS and PFS and CTLA-4 gene expression is associated with OS, whereas the serum biomarkers analyzed in this study show no significant correlation with survival in HCC. Hence, PD-1 and CTLA-4 expressed in PBMCs are considered potential prognostic biomarkers for patients with HCC that can facilitate prediction of malignancy, response to currently available HCC treatments, and overall survival
