    Extension scientists transfer proven technologies to the farmers as well as to the state departements with a view to reduce the time lag between the technology generation and its adoption. They also provide the first-hand feedback regarding the adoption of technologies, constraints and behavioural pattern of clients so that research, education and training programmes can be re-oriented accordingly.     A wide gap exists between research findings and end users in the fisheries sector. The quality of a good technology is that it should be triable in field at a small scale, should earn good profit in comparison to existing practices, must be compatible with socio-cultural values and beliefs and should be simple and observable type. Extension researchers have developed different models for the linkage between research and practice. One of the best models is the problem solving model, which starts with the person who has a problem either with research or innovation. A farmer will need information to solve his problem. A part of the information will come from the experience of the farmers in a particular farming system and other part will come either from the existing research findings or from new research carried out to solve the problem. So technology should be developed keeping in view the problems, values and socio-economic levels of fishermen

    One among the four transfer of technology (TOT)systems in India The first-line extension system of the ICAR having an institutional extension role accelerates the process of transfer of technology. In order to serve its first-line role effectively, CMFRI carried out an Extension project entitled 'Planned change in a coastal villageтАФa model for first-line extension programme' from 1987 to 1990. Kandakkadavu, 20 kms away from Ernakulam district in the southwest direction was selected as the suitable area for implementation. Of 395 families, 165 families were contacted for the implementation of the project. The field extension programme was launched keeping in view three main objectives (i) optimum utilization of available resources (ii) extension education to bring awareness of appropriate technologies and development programmes and (iii) to show ways and means for generation of supplementary source of income utilising technologies developed by CMFRI. Programmes were launched to disseminate scientific prawn culture, prawn seed collection, fish processing and to improve the standard of life

    The scientific staff ot the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute have been engaged in research on various aspects of marine fisheries and oceanography since the establishment of the Institute in 1947. The results of research were published by them in various scientific papers incorporated in the Institute's publications like the Indian Journal of Fisheries, Bulletins, Special Publications, Marine Fisheries Information Service, Annual Reports and also in the Journal of the Marine Biological Association of India over the past 38 years. Papers have also been published in standard Indian and foreign journals and in the proceedings of the national and international Symposia and Seminars. An attempt has been made in 1967 to compile a list of publications of the staff of the Institute yearwise in the Souvenir released by the Recreation Club of the Institute on the 20th year of establishment of the Institute. The scientific output of the Institute has greatly increased in recent years and the papers resulting out of the research efforts have also been wide spread in different journals. However, no further attempt has again been made to bring together all the publications of the scientific staff of the Institute at one place. Such an endeavour, it is felt, would not only reflect the entire work of the Institute, but also facilitates easy reference to the work of the Institute making it a valuable source of reference for the scientific community engaged in marine sciences research. Therefore, in the present publication entitled 'Bibliography: the publications by the staff of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute 1948-1985', all papers published by the staff from the year 1948 to 1985 have been compiled yearwise and authorwise in alphabetical order. In doing so, care has been taken to include as many publications as possible. But there can still be some omissions. It should be possible to include such references at a later date when the Bibliography may be updated. It is earnestly hoped that this comprehensive volume of references would serve a very useful purpose for the scientific community within this country and abroad. In this connection, I have great pleasure to record my sincere appreciation of the efforts put in by Dr. K. Rengarajan, Scientist S 2, Miss. Jancy Jacob, Scientist S 1 and Shri V. Edwin Joseph, Senior Library Assistant to collect, consolidate and arrange in a systematic manner all the titles of the papers included in this volume. I also appreciate the services of Smt. N.     Status of milk quality at farmers field

    The study was conducted on the clean milk production (CMP), to analyze the milk quality from producer to processing plant in cooperative system. To fulfill the objectives, a plan of work was prepared; under which 4 milk unions of Rajasthan Cooperative Dairy Federation (RCDF) were selected, viz. Alwar, Bhilwara, Bikaner and Hanumangarh. To analyze the milk quality, samples were collected from 3 levels of milk collection, viz. pail (farmer), Dairy Cooperative Society (DCS) and dock (district level) in cooperative system and tested at respective unionsтАЩ laboratory. The study revealed that as per ISO standards milk unions stands at тАШVery GoodтАЩ at pail, тАШGoodтАЩ at DCS and тАШFairтАЩ at dock level, respectively. Lack of incentives on CMP was perceived as very serious constraint by all the farmers
