Gradual Release of Responsibility Approach in Developing Synthesis in Primary-aged Children

    Get PDF
This action research explored the effects of using the gradual release of responsibility instructional method (Harvey and Goudvis, 2000) to improve the synthesis abilities of fourteen second grade students who attend a small rural school. The specific treatment involved the students in modeled, shared, guided, and independent practice of the synthesis strategy using authentic children\u27s literature. The DRA2 interpretation scores of the students were compared before and after the treatment. The results showed that twelve of the students scored within the independent or advanced level, one student improved from frustration to instructional level, and one student remained at the frustration level

On the cutting edge: prognostic factors for local recurrence of vulvar cancer

Vulvar cancer is a disease which mainly affects elderly women. The treatment has become less radical over the last years due to the usage of the sentinel node procedure. In this thesis the long term follow-up of patients treated with this procedure is assessed. The results show that the treatment is safe, but the local recurrence rate remains high, with 40% of patients developing a local recurrence within 10 years. Further research was performed to determine the prognostic factors for a local recurrence. The presence of a premalignancy or the skin disease lichen sclerosus in the tumor margin increases the local recurrence rate. Patients with human papillomavirus (HPV) related tumors show a lower local recurrence and higher survival rate compared to patients with a non-HPV related tumor. The tumor microenvironment (tumor surroundings) was analyzed for the fibroblast markers alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and platelet derived growth factor beta receptor (PDGFβR). Patients with higher intensity of these markers showed a higher local recurrence rate. Lastly this thesis assesses the outcome of the lotus petal flap procedure, a reconstructive surgery technique where part of the vulva is reconstructed. The sexual function of patients undergoing this procedure was decreased due to higher pain levels, however patients are satisfied with their sexual functioning

Stability constants for some divalent metal ion/crown ether complexes in methanol determined by polarography and conductometry

Stability constants in methanol at 25.0°C were evaluated for the complexes of the divalent cations Ca2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Mg2+, Co2+ and Cu2+ with the macrocyclic polyethers 15-crown-5 (15C5), 18-crown-6 (18C6), dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 (DC18C6) and dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8). The log K values of the 1:1 complexes were generally in the range 2.1–4.2, which is low in comparison to the values of the corresponding crown ether/alkali metal ion complexes. M2L complexes were observed for the systems Pb2+/18C6, Pb2+/DC18C6, Ca2+/DC18C6 and Cu2+/D18C6, whereas ML2 complexes were found for Ca2+/18C6 and Cu2+/18C6. Within the series of complexes studied, there was no clear relationship between cation diameter and hole size

Quality of life and current coping in young adult survivors of childhood cancer: Positive expectations about the further course of the disease were correlated with better quality of life

OBJECTIVES: As a result of advances in the treatment of childhood cancer many patients who may previously have had a limited life expectancy, are now surviving into adulthood. More insight is needed into the long-term adjustment of young adult survivors of childhood cancer. The purpose of this study was to (1) assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and (2) to explore the role of cognitive coping in relation to HRQoL. METHODS: HRQoL of 353 Dutch young adult survivors of childhood cancer was compared with HRQoL of 507 peers. Linear regression analyses predicted survivors' HRQoL by cognitive coping, independent of the impact of demographics and medical variables. RESULTS: Survivors reported a lower HRQoL than their peers. Health status was the best predictor of the Physical Component Scale of the RAND-36; health status and cognitive coping contributed almost equally well to the Mental Component Scale. The explanatory value of cognitive coping could mainly be attributed to the use of predictive control strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Because current coping seemed to be an important predictor of HRQoL, interventions directed at the coping strategies of survivors should be useful. The strong association between predictive coping and HRQoL stresses the importance of focusing at having positive expectations about the further course of the diseas
