Immigration, Offshoring and American Jobs
How many \"American jobs\" have U.S.-born workers lost due to immigration and offshoring? Or, alternatively, is it possible that immigration and offshoring, by promoting cost-savings and enhanced efficiency in firms, have spurred the creation of jobs for U.S. natives? We consider a multi-sector version of the Grossman and Rossi-Hansberg (2008) model with a continuum of tasks in each sector and we augment it to include immigrants with heterogeneous productivity in tasks. We use this model to jointly analyze the impact of a reduction in the costs of offshoring and of the costs of immigrating to the U.S. The model predicts that while cheaper offshoring reduces the share of natives among less skilled workers, cheaper immigration does not, but rather reduces the share of offshored jobs instead. Moreover, since both phenomena have a positive \"cost-savings\" effect they may leave unaffected, or even increase, total native employment of less skilled workers. Our model also predicts that offshoring will push natives toward jobs that are more intensive in communication-interactive skills and away from those that are manual and routine intensive. We test the predictions of the model on data for 58 U.S. manufacturing industries over the period 2000-2007 and find evidence in favor of a positive productivity effect such that immigration has a positive net effect on native employment while offshoring has no effect on it. Techonolgical Change and the Income Distribution: Theory and Some Evidence
This paper considers two types of technological change in a unified model. Typ A is unskilled-biased, allowing workers to cheaply produce more. This hurts the least talented workers while possibly benefitting the most talented ones. Together, these technological changes may have contributed to the continuous rise in income inequiality that developed economies have witnessed in recent decades. The paper compares the theoretical results with US data and finds support for the predictions
From selling goods to selling services: firm responses to trade liberalization
In the face of trade liberalization domestic firms are often forced out of the market, whereas others adapt and survive. In this paper we focus on a new channel of adaptation, namely the shift toward increased provision of services in lieu of goods production. We exploit variation in EU trade policy to show that lower manufacturing tariffs cause firms to shift into services provision and out of goods production. Additionally, we find that a successful transition is strongly associated with higher firm-level R&D stocks whereas higher physical capital stocks slow the shift into services provision
Application of remote sensing technologies to improve yield and water-use efficiency in irrigated peanuts
Remote sensing imagery of irrigated peanut crops using simple airborne digital video camera systems offers growers and consultants a cost effective technique for the assessment of „spatial‟ variability in crop performance. Images of near infra-red reflectance taken from irrigated peanut crops (pivots) in southern Queensland showed major variability arising from crop stress, which was most likely a result of poor irrigation distribution and/or poor water infiltration. Near infra-red reflectance from peanut crops taken at approximately 4 to 6 weeks prior to harvest was also shown to be highly correlated with final pod yield, and offers a potential yield forecasting technique for growers and industry. The close association also allows an assessment of the magnitude of the yield deficit resulting from spatial variability (or 'yield gap'). This provides growers and consultants with a useful method to calculate the economic impact of reducing the „yield gap‟ in their own fields and has potential to be utilised as a strategic tool for identifying problems and improving various aspects of crop management
Immigration, trade and productivity in services:evidence from UK firms
This paper explores the impact of immigrants on the imports, exports and productivity of serviceproducing firms in the U.K. Immigrants may substitute for imported intermediate inputs (offshore production) and they may impact the productivity of the firm as well as its export behavior. The first effect can be understood as the re-assignment of offshore productive tasks to immigrant workers. The second can be seen as a productivity or cost cutting effect due to immigration, and the third as the effect of immigrants on specific bilateral trade costs. We test the predictions of our model using differences in immigrant inflows across U.K. labor markets, instrumented with an enclave-based instrument that distinguishes between aggregate and bilateral immigration, as well as immigrant diversity. We find that immigrants increase overall productivity in service-producing firms, revealing a cost cutting impact on these firms. Immigrants also reduce the extent of country-specific offshoring, consistent with a reallocation of tasks and, finally, they increase country-specific exports, implying an important role in reducing communication and trade costs for services
