ALICE mesurements of heavy-flavour production in pp and p-Pb collisions at the LHC

The D meson yields as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV and in p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02 TeV are presented. The measurement of the yields of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02 TeV are shown as well. The measurement of azimuthal correlations of prompt D mesons and charged hadrons in pp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV and in p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02 TeV are also presented. The results are compared with expectations from models.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Hard and Electromagnetic Probes of High-energy Nuclear Collisions, 23-27 September 2016, Wuhan, Chin

Measurement of D-meson production in p-Pb collisions with the ALICE detector

The ALICE Collaboration has measured the production of prompt D mesons in pPb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 5.02 TeV in the rapidity range -0.04 < y_{cms} < 0.96 via the exclusive reconstruction of their hadronic decays D0->K-pi+, D+->K- pi+ pi+, D*+->D0 pi+ and Ds->phi pi+. The pT-differential production cross sections and the pT-dependent nuclear modification factors with respect to a proton-proton reference, RpPb, are presented.Comment: Strangeness in Quark Matter 2013 proceedings, 4 pages, 2 figure

Teaching learners to communicate effectively in the L2: Integrating body language in the students\u2019 syllabus

In communication a great deal of meaning is exchanged through body language, including gaze, posture, hand gestures and body movements. Body language is largely culture-specific, and rests, for its comprehension, on people\u2019s sharing socio-cultural and linguistic norms. In cross-cultural communication, L2 speakers\u2019 use of body language may convey meaning that is not understood or misinterpreted by the interlocutors, affecting the pragmatics of communication. In spite of its importance for cross-cultural communication, body language is neglected in ESL/EFL teaching. This paper argues that the study of body language should be integrated in the syllabus of ESL/EFL teaching and learning. This is done by: 1) reviewing literature showing the tight connection between language, speech and gestures and the problems that might arise in cross-cultural communication when speakers use and interpret body language according to different conventions; 2) reporting the data from two pilot studies showing that L2 learners transfer L1 gestures to the L2 and that these are not understood by native L2 speakers; 3) reporting an experience teaching body language in an ESL/EFL classroom. The paper suggests that in multicultural ESL/EFL classes teaching body language should be aimed primarily at raising the students\u2019 awareness of the differences existing across cultures

A capability approach to language education in the Gaza Strip: “To plant hope in a land of despair”

This article proposes a shift away from competence models (Byram 1997) toward a more holistic approach in language education. Drawing on original critical participatory action research with English teachers in the Gaza Strip (Palestine), Imperiale argues that the capability approach (Sen 1985; Nussbaum 2000) offers a potential framework for understanding and co-constructing language education in precarious circumstances such as those in Gaza. The participants in this study are followed through their process of nourishing what Nussbaum (2006) considers the three capabilities in education: affiliation, narrative imagination and critical examination. Their work also nurtured the further capability of voice and agency, which, in the specific context of Gaza, intersects with acts of aesthetic, cultural and linguistic resistance

Dynamical decoupling and dynamical isolation in temporally modulated coupled pendulums

We theoretically study the dynamics of a pair of coupled pendulums subject to a periodic temporal modulation of their oscillation frequency. Inspired from analogous developments in quantum mechanics, we anticipate dynamical localization and dynamical isolation effects, as well as the occurrence of non-trivial coupling phases. Perspectives in the direction of studying synthetic gauge fields in a classical mechanics context are outlined.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Beauty Will Save Us Hypothesis of European Structural Funds Use as a Tool to Create in Italy an Economic Model able to Create Widespread Wellbeing through the Exploitation of Beauty and Quality

The financial crisis erupted in USA in August 2007 has been the main cause of a long period of global recession far and difficult to overcome especially in EU. Taking into consideration the duration of the crisis we can conclude that its nature is not cyclical but structural. It follows that the only opportunity to overcome the current recession is strictly linked to a rethink of development models which have determined this crisis. Among the European Countries showing the greatest difficulties to overcome the crisis Italy is the Country whose economic and social system is particularly evidenced by the ongoing state of crisis. In particular, the Italian productive system, traditionally based on small and medium size enterprises with strong territorial links, seems to suffer in particular the homologation and competitive rules based on production costs of globalization. At the same time, in Italy, thanks to its territorial peculiarities, these weakness could be transformed in great opportunities to intercept the demand of beauty and quality, still growing on a large scale. The characteristics of Italian model can be considered as a concrete opportunity to create a new model of development based on the production of a widespread wellbeing through the exploitation of local resources. For this reason, the aim of this paper is the proposal of a model of territorial intervention as a valid response to the needs and potentialities of areas most affected by the crisis in line with programmatic framework and socio structural policies tools stated by the European Union for the period 2014-2020
