Combustion synthesis and spark plasma sintering of apatite-tricalcium phosphate nanocomposites

A processing route consisting of Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) of precursor powders prepared by Solution Combustion Synthesis (SCS) is proposed for the first time for the fabrication of bulk nanostructured biphasic calcium phosphates. The apatite phase content in the product obtained by SCS was maximized using a fuel to oxidizer ratio of 1.1. After a post-synthesis air-annealing step conducted a 700 °C/3 h, powders consisted of 83 wt.% of carbonated apatite, with average crystallite size less than 70 nm, and β- and α-TCP (tricalcium phosphate), as secondary phases. Detailed structural analyses evidenced that the original nanostructure was retained after sintering at 900 °C, with the obtainment of nearly 91% dense, apatite-rich, biphasic bioceramics, with grains size of about 100 nm. The developed nanostructured biphasic material is expected to possess a higher resorption rate than standard microcrystalline hydroxyapatite, which makes it preferable for bone tissue regeneration

Optofluidic lens with tunable focal length and asphericity

Adaptive micro-lenses enable the design of very compact optical systems with tunable imaging properties. Conventional adaptive micro-lenses suffer from substantial spherical aberration that compromises the optical performance of the system. Here, we introduce a novel concept of liquid micro-lenses with superior imaging performance that allows for simultaneous and independent tuning of both focal length and asphericity. This is achieved by varying both hydrostatic pressures and electric fields to control the shape of the refracting interface between an electrically conductive lens fluid and a non-conductive ambient fluid. Continuous variation from spherical interfaces at zero electric field to hyperbolic ones with variable ellipticity for finite fields gives access to lenses with positive, zero, and negative spherical aberration (while the focal length can be tuned via the hydrostatic pressure)

RhoA GTPase Activation by TLR2 and TLR3 Ligands: Connecting via Src to NF- B

Rho GTPases are essential regulators of signaling networks emanating from many receptors involved in innate or adaptive immunity. The Rho family member RhoA controls cytoskeletal processes as well as the activity of transcription factors such as NF-κB, C/EBP and serum response factor. The multifaceted host cell activation triggered by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in response to soluble and particulate microbial structures includes rapid stimulation of RhoA activity. RhoA acts downstream of TLR2 in HEK-TLR2 and monocytic THP-1 cells, but the signaling pathway connecting TLR2 and RhoA is still unknown. It is also not clear if RhoA activation is dependent on a certain TLR adapter. Using lung epithelial cells, we demonstrate TLR2- and TLR3-triggered recruitment and activation of RhoA at receptor-proximal cellular compartments. RhoA activity was dependent on TLR-mediated stimulation of Src family kinases. Both Src family kinases and RhoA were required for NF-κB activation, while RhoA was dispensable for type I interferon generation. These results suggest that RhoA plays a role downstream of MyD88-dependent and -independent TLR signaling and acts as a molecular switch downstream of TLR-Src initiated pathways

Entangled light in transition through the generation threshold

We investigate continuous variable entangling resources on the base of two-mode squeezing for all operational regimes of a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator with allowance for quantum noise of arbitrary level. The results for the quadrature variances of a pair of generated modes are obtained by using the exact steady-state solution of Fokker-Planck equation for the complex P-quasiprobability distribution function. We find a simple expression for the squeezed variances in the near-threshold range and conclude that the maximal two-mode squeezing reaches 50% relative to the level of vacuum fluctuations and is achieved at the pump field intensity close to the generation threshold. The distinction between the degree of two-mode squeezing for monostable and bistable operational regimes is cleared up.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; Content changed: more details added to the discussion.
