On the dominance of J(P)=0(+) ground states in even-even nuclei from random two-body interactions
Recent calculations using random two-body interactions showed a preponderance
of J(P)=0(+) ground states, despite the fact that there is no strong pairing
character in the force. We carry out an analysis of a system of identical
particles occupying orbits with j=1/2, 3/2 and 5/2 and discuss some general
features of the spectra derived from random two-body interactions. We show that
for random two-body interactions that are not time-reversal invariant the
dominance of 0(+) states in this case is more pronounced, indicating that

Frost Crack in Norway Maple, Acer platanoides
Frost cracks developed on from 0 - 29 per cent of the Norway maples in one nursery near St. Paul, Minnesota, in late November, 1970. The trees affected averaged 0 .9 - 1.3 inches in diameter and, of the eight varieties in the nursery, Jade Glen was the most susceptible and Emerald Queen the most resistant. More of the trees on a northeast facing slope were affected than those on a flat knoll. After 2 years the majority of the cracks were closed, except in the Crimson King variety, in which case 86 per cent were still open. Wood rotting fungi, especially Schizophyllum commune, were recovered from 100 per cent of the trees
Parasitism, Adult Emergence, Sex Ratio, and Size of \u3ci\u3eAphidius Colemani\u3c/i\u3e (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) on Several Aphid Species
Aphidius colemani Viereck parasitizes several economically important aphid pests of small grain crops including the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum and the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia. The ability of A. colemani to switch from S. graminum to several species of aphids common to agricultural and associated non-agricultural ecosystems in the Great Plains, and the effects of host-change on several biological parameters that influence population growth rate were determined. Female A. colemani parasitized and developed to adulthood in nine of 14 aphid species to which they were exposed in the laboratory. All small grain feeding aphids except Sipha flava were parasiÂtized. Two sunflower feeding species (Aphis nerii and A. helianthi) and two crucifer feeding species (Lipaphis erysimi and Brevicoryne brassicae) were parasitized, as was the cotton aphid. Aphis gossypii. The average percentage of aphids parasitized differed significantly among host aphid species. as did the percentage of parasitoids surviving from the mummy to the adult stage and the time required for immature development. The sex ratio of adults that enclosed from the various hosts did not differ significantly among species. Dry weights of adult parasitoids differed significantly among host species. Adults from S. graminum weighed most (0.054 mg) while those emerging from A. helianthi weighed least (0.020 mg). Results are discussed in terms of strategies for classical biological control of aphid pests of cereals
Hydrogen Dissociation and Diffusion on Ni and Ti -doped Mg(0001) Surfaces
It is well known, both theoretically and experimentally, that alloying
MgH with transition elements can significantly improve the thermodynamic
and kinetic properties for H desorption, as well as the H intake by Mg
bulk. Here we present a density functional theory investigation of hydrogen
dissociation and surface diffusion over Ni-doped surface, and compare the
findings to previously investigated Ti-doped Mg(0001) and pure Mg(0001)
surfaces. Our results show that the energy barrier for hydrogen dissociation on
the pure Mg(0001) surface is high, while it is small/null when Ni/Ti are added
to the surface as dopants. We find that the binding energy of the two H atoms
near the dissociation site is high on Ti, effectively impeding diffusion away
from the Ti site. By contrast, we find that on Ni the energy barrier for
diffusion is much reduced. Therefore, although both Ti and Ni promote H
dissociation, only Ni appears to be a good catalyst for Mg hydrogenation,
allowing diffusion away from the catalytic sites. Experimental results
corroborate these theoretical findings, i.e. faster hydrogenation of the Ni
doped Mg sample as opposed to the reference Mg or Ti doped Mg.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, to appear in Journal of Chemical Physic
Electronic transport coefficients from ab initio simulations and application to dense liquid hydrogen
Using Kubo's linear response theory, we derive expressions for the
frequency-dependent electrical conductivity (Kubo-Greenwood formula),
thermopower, and thermal conductivity in a strongly correlated electron system.
These are evaluated within ab initio molecular dynamics simulations in order to
study the thermoelectric transport coefficients in dense liquid hydrogen,
especially near the nonmetal-to-metal transition region. We also observe
significant deviations from the widely used Wiedemann-Franz law which is
strictly valid only for degenerate systems and give an estimate for its valid
scope of application towards lower densities
Estimating the nuclear level density with the Monte Carlo shell model
A method for making realistic estimates of the density of levels in even-even
nuclei is presented making use of the Monte Carlo shell model (MCSM). The
procedure follows three basic steps: (1) computation of the thermal energy with
the MCSM, (2) evaluation of the partition function by integrating the thermal
energy, and (3) evaluating the level density by performing the inverse Laplace
transform of the partition function using Maximum Entropy reconstruction
techniques. It is found that results obtained with schematic interactions,
which do not have a sign problem in the MCSM, compare well with realistic
shell-model interactions provided an important isospin dependence is accounted

Parallel Picoliter RT-PCR Assays Using Microfluidics
The development of microfluidic tools for high-throughput nucleic acid analysis has become a burgeoning area of research in the post-genome era. Here, we have developed a microfluidic chip to perform 72 parallel 450-pL RT-PCRs. We took advantage of Taqman hydrolysis probe chemistry to detect RNA templates as low as 34 copies. The device and method presented here may enable highly parallel single cell gene expression analysis
Simplifying ARM concurrency: Multicopy-atomic axiomatic and operational models for ARMv8
ARM has a relaxed memory model, previously specified in informal prose for ARMv7 and ARMv8. Over time, and partly due to work building formal semantics for ARM concurrency, it has become clear that some of the complexity of the model is not justified by the potential benefits. In particular, the model was originally
non-multicopy-atomic
: writes could become visible to some other threads before becoming visible to all — but this has not been exploited in production implementations, the corresponding potential hardware optimisations are thought to have insufficient benefits in the ARM context, and it gives rise to subtle complications when combined with other ARMv8 features. The ARMv8 architecture has therefore been revised: it now has a multicopy-atomic model. It has also been simplified in other respects, including more straightforward notions of dependency, and the architecture now includes a formal concurrency model.
In this paper we detail these changes and discuss their motivation. We define two formal concurrency models: an operational one, simplifying the Flowing model of Flur et al., and the axiomatic model of the revised ARMv8 specification. The models were developed by an academic group and by ARM staff, respectively, and this extended collaboration partly motivated the above changes. We prove the equivalence of the two models. The operational model is integrated into an executable exploration tool with new web interface, demonstrated by exhaustively checking the possible behaviours of a loop-unrolled version of a Linux kernel lock implementation, a previously known bug due to unprevented speculation, and a fixed version.</jats:p
