    Evolution of crystalline electric field effects, superconductivity, and heavy fermion behavior in the specific heat of Pr(Os1x_{1-x}Rux_x)4_4Sb12_{12}

    Specific heat C(T)C(T) measurements were made on single crystals of the superconducting filled skutterudite series Pr(Os1x_{1-x}Rux_x)4_4Sb12_{12} down to 0.6 K. Crystalline electric field fits in the normal state produced parameters which were in agreement with previous measurements. Bulk superconductivity was observed for all values of the Ru concentration xx with transition temperatures consistent with previous experiments, confirming a minimum in TcT_{c} at x=0.6x=0.6. The C(T)C(T) data below TcT_{c} appear to be more consistent with power law behavior for x=0x=0 (PrOs4_4Sb12_{12}), and with exponential behavior for 0.05x0.20.05 \leq x \leq 0.2. An enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient γ\gamma was observed for x0.4x \leq 0.4, further supporting x0.6x \simeq 0.6 as a critical concentration where the physical properties abruptly change.     Effects of Family, Friends, and Relative Prices on Fruit and Vegetable Consumption by African American Youths

    Facilitating healthy eating among young people, particularly among minorities who are at high risk for gaining excess weight, is at the forefront of current policy discussions and food program reviews. We investigate the effects of social interactions and relative prices on fruit and vegetable consumption by African American youths using rich behavioral data from the Family and Community Health Study and area-specific food prices. We find the presence of endogenous effects between a youth and parent, but not between a youth and friend. Lower relative prices of fruits and vegetables tend to increase intakes.     Earnings distribution, corporate governance and CEO pay

    We investigate the relationship between earnings differentials and the pay of CEOs of 190 British companies between 1970 and 1990. We find that (i) changes in the differential between the 90th and 50th weekly earnings percentiles for non-manual adult male workers [90:50] explain changes in the level of real CEO salary and bonus in our sample of companies; (ii) changes in this differential also account for changes in the elasticity of CEO pay to firm size; (iii) a broader measure of earnings inequality does far worse than 90:50 at explaining changes in both the level and the firm size elasticity of CEO pay; (iv) fitting the model on data for 1970-1983 and predicting pay levels for the period starting with the widespread adoption of executive share option schemes in 1984, we find a structural break in the relationship between lower management pay differentials and the pay of the CEO. We conclude first that top executive pay prior to 1984 was a stable function of both firm size and earnings differentials lower on the administrative ladder, consistent with a hypothesis advanced by Herbert Simon in 1957; and second that the use of share options from 1984 onward represents not simply a change in the mode of top executive compensation, but a de -linking of the pay of top executives and that of their subordinates

    Establishment of the Minimum Biological Capacity for Nitrogen Excretion in Pigs

    To determine the minimum biological capacity for nitrogen (N) excretion for pigs, dietary regimens were created and fed that were designed to eliminate fecal excretion of undigested feed N, minimize endogenous N secretions and minimize intakes of nitrogenous compounds (amino acids) above those of the pigs biological needs. Excretion of undigested fecal N was eliminated by feeding ingredients containing highly digestible (≈100%) sources of nitrogen and by eliminating compounds that bind N. Endogenous secretions were minimized by eliminating antinutritional factors from the diet and by minimizing enteric bacterial populations. Intakes of amino acids above the animal\u27s needs were minimized by providing a pattern of amino acids that closely matched that needed by the pig. Furthermore, dietary amino acids were provided to the pigs in amounts above, at, and below their biological needs based on the amounts of urea N excreted in the urine and the amounts of N accrued in the body. From two-slope breakpoint analysis, apparent digestible N intake resulting in maximum N retention (2.58g⋅kg-1BW.75⋅d-1) was determined to be 3.66g⋅kg-1BW.75⋅d-1. When daily apparent digestible nitrogen intakes were below the pigs\u27 determined need, the amount of digestible N (mg⋅kg-1BW.75⋅d-1) lost for body maintenance processes was estimated as .239 in urine and .080 in feces. The amount lost in urine as unusable for body N accretion was .206 g⋅kg-1BW.75⋅d-1 of each gram of digestible N consumed above body maintenance needs. When daily apparent digestible N intakes were above the pigs determined need, .900 g of each gram of additional N consumed above that needed for body N accretion was excreted. The minimum biological capacity for N excretion in pigs, defined as total (urinary plus fecal) obligatory losses of N, is estimated to be .287g⋅kg-1BW.75⋅d-1 to support pigs at N maintenance and 1.11 g⋅kg-1BW.75⋅d-1 for pigs at maximum body N accretion. Using these estimates, the minimal biological capacity for N excretion can be calculated for pigs at various stages of growth. For example, in 60 kg pigs, minimum capacity for N excretion is estimated at .10 and .39 g/kg body weight/day in pigs in states of N maintenance and maximum body N accretion, respectively. These values are 12 and 44%, respectively, of N excretion relative to published standards (ASAE D384.1). Similarly, the N content of excreta from animals excreting N at their biological minimum was determined to be 2.57 g N/liter, or 18% of standard excreta N content (corrected for volatilization, ASAE D384.1). Based on these data, the minimum biological capacity for the excretion of N in pigs is substantially less than current estimates of N excretion and can be achieved by eliminating dietary factors that contribute to N excretion. Furthermore, dietary regimens that allow the minimum biological capacity for N excretion to be achieved are biologically capable of supporting maximum rates of body accretion (i.e., lean tissue growth) in pigs

    High magnetic field phase diagram of PrOs4Sb12

    The magnetic phase diagram of PrOs4_4Sb12_{12} has been investigated by specific heat measurements between 8 and 32 T. A new Schottky anomaly due to excitations between two lowest crystalline-electric-field (CEF) singlets, has been found for both H(100)H \parallel (100) and H(110)H \parallel (110) above the field where the field-induced ordered phase (FIOP) is suppressed. The constructed HTH-T phase diagram shows weak magnetic anisotropy and implies a crossing of the two CEF levels at about 8 - 9 T for both field directions. These results provide an unambiguous evidence for the Γ1\Gamma_1 singlet being the CEF ground state and suggest the level crossing (involving lowest CEF levels) as the driving mechanism of FIOP.Comment: Submitted to Phys.
