Dynamical age differences among coeval star clusters as revealed by blue stragglers
Globular star clusters that formed at the same cosmic time may have evolved
rather differently from a dynamical point of view (because that evolution
depends on the internal environment) through a variety of processes that tend
progressively to segregate stars more massive than the average towards the
cluster centre. Therefore clusters with the same chronological age may have
reached quite different stages of their dynamical history (that is, they may
have different dynamical ages). Blue straggler stars have masses greater than
those at the turn-off point on the main sequence and therefore must be the
result of either a collision or a mass-transfer event. Because they are among
the most massive and luminous objects in old clusters, they can be used as test
particles with which to probe dynamical evolution. Here we report that globular
clusters can be grouped into a few distinct families on the basis of the radial
distribution of blue stragglers. This grouping corresponds well to an effective
ranking of the dynamical stage reached by stellar systems, thereby permitting a
direct measure of the cluster dynamical age purely from observed properties.Comment: Published on the 20 December 2012 issue of Natur
Two distinct sequences of blue straggler stars in the globular cluster M30
Stars in globular clusters are generally believed to have all formed at the
same time, early in the Galaxy's history. 'Blue stragglers' are stars massive
enough that they should have evolved into white dwarfs long ago. Two possible
mechanisms have been proposed for their formation: mass transfer between binary
companions and stellar mergers resulting from direct collisions between two
stars. Recently, the binary explanation was claimed to be dominant. Here we
report that there are two distinct parallel sequences of blue stragglers in
M30. This globular cluster is thought to have undergone 'core collapse', during
which both the collision rate and the mass transfer activity in binary systems
would have been enhanced. We suggest that the two observed sequences arise from
the cluster core collapse, with the bluer population arising from direct
stellar collisions and the redder one arising from the evolution of close
binaries that are probably still experiencing an active phase of mass transfer.Comment: Published on the 24th December 2009 issue of Natur
Exposure to Endocrine Disruptors and Nuclear Receptors Gene Expression in Infertile and Fertile Men from Italian Areas with Different Environmental Features
Internal levels of selected endocrine disruptors (EDs) (i.e., perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), di-2-ethylhexyl-phthalate (DEHP), mono-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (MEHP), and bisphenol A (BPA)) were analyzed in blood/serum of infertile and fertile men from metropolitan, urban and rural Italian areas. PFOS and PFOA levels were also evaluated in seminal plasma. In peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of same subjects, gene expression levels of a panel of nuclear receptors (NRs), namely estrogen receptor α (ERα) estrogen receptor β (ERβ), androgen receptor (AR), aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) and pregnane X receptor (PXR) were also assessed. Infertile men from the metropolitan area had significantly higher levels of BPA and gene expression of all NRs, except PPARγ, compared to subjects from other areas. Subjects from urban areas had significantly higher levels of MEHP, whereas subjects from rural area had higher levels of PFOA in both blood and seminal plasma. Interestingly, ERα, ERβ, AR, PXR and AhR expression is directly correlated with BPA and inversely correlated with PFOA serum levels. Our study indicates the relevance of the living environment when investigating the exposure to specific EDs. Moreover, the NRs panel in PBMCs demonstrated to be a potential biomarker of effect to assess the EDs impact on reproductive health
Reverse Bisimulations on Stable Configuration Structures
The relationships between various equivalences on configuration structures,
including interleaving bisimulation (IB), step bisimulation (SB) and hereditary
history-preserving (HH) bisimulation, have been investigated by van Glabbeek
and Goltz (and later Fecher). Since HH bisimulation may be characterised by the
use of reverse as well as forward transitions, it is of interest to investigate
forms of IB and SB where both forward and reverse transitions are allowed. We
give various characterisations of reverse SB, showing that forward steps do not
add extra power. We strengthen Bednarczyk's result that, in the absence of
auto-concurrency, reverse IB is as strong as HH bisimulation, by showing that
we need only exclude auto-concurrent events at the same depth in the
configuration
Redundancy, Deduction Schemes, and Minimum-Size Bases for Association Rules
Association rules are among the most widely employed data analysis methods in
the field of Data Mining. An association rule is a form of partial implication
between two sets of binary variables. In the most common approach, association
rules are parameterized by a lower bound on their confidence, which is the
empirical conditional probability of their consequent given the antecedent,
and/or by some other parameter bounds such as "support" or deviation from
independence. We study here notions of redundancy among association rules from
a fundamental perspective. We see each transaction in a dataset as an
interpretation (or model) in the propositional logic sense, and consider
existing notions of redundancy, that is, of logical entailment, among
association rules, of the form "any dataset in which this first rule holds must
obey also that second rule, therefore the second is redundant". We discuss
several existing alternative definitions of redundancy between association
rules and provide new characterizations and relationships among them. We show
that the main alternatives we discuss correspond actually to just two variants,
which differ in the treatment of full-confidence implications. For each of
these two notions of redundancy, we provide a sound and complete deduction
calculus, and we show how to construct complete bases (that is,
axiomatizations) of absolutely minimum size in terms of the number of rules. We
explore finally an approach to redundancy with respect to several association
rules, and fully characterize its simplest case of two partial premises.Comment: LMCS accepted pape
Extensive Sclerosing Mesenteritis of the Rectosigmoid Colon Associated with Erosive Colitis
Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare, idiopatic, usually benign, inflammatory process of the mesenteric adipose tissue. The most common site of involvement is the small bowel mesentery. We present a case of sclerosing mesenteritis of the rectosigmoid colon as a cause of severe abdominal pain, abdominal obstruction, and ischemic colic mucosal lesions. Contrast enema, colonoscopy, angiography, and CT were the imaging modalities used. A 20 cm diameter, fibrotic mass causing extensive compression of rectosigmoid colon was found at laparotomy. Histological examination showed extended fibrosis, inflammatory cells infiltration, lipophages, and granulomas within the mesenteric adipose tissue associated with erosive colitis. The Tumor Microenvironment of Clear-Cell Ovarian Cancer
Some patients with advanced clear-cell ovarian cancer (CCOC) respond to immunotherapy; however, little is known about the tumor microenvironment (TME) of this relatively rare disease. Here, we describe a comprehensive quantitative and topographical analysis of biopsies from 45 patients, 9 with Federation Internationale des Gynaecologistes et Obstetristes (FIGO) stage I/II (early CCOC) and 36 with FIGO stage III/IV (advanced CCOC). We investigated 14 immune cell phenotype markers, PD-1 and ligands, and collagen structure and texture. We interrogated a microarray data set from a second cohort of 29 patients and compared the TMEs of ARID1A-wildtype (ARID1A(wt)) versus ARID1A-mutant (ARID1A(mut)) disease. We found significant variations in immune cell frequency and phenotype, checkpoint expression, and collagen matrix between the malignant cell area (MCA), leading edge (LE), and stroma. The MCA had the largest population of CD138(+) plasma cells, the LE had more CD20(+) B cells and T cells, whereas the stroma had more mast cells and αSMA(+) fibroblasts. PD-L2 was expressed predominantly on malignant cells and was the dominant PD-1 ligand. Compared with early CCOC, advanced-stage disease had significantly more fibroblasts and a more complex collagen matrix, with microarray analysis indicating “TGFβ remodeling of the extracellular matrix” as the most significantly enriched pathway. Data showed significant differences in immune cell populations, collagen matrix, and cytokine expression between ARID1A(wt) and ARID1A(mut) CCOC, which may reflect different paths of tumorigenesis and the relationship to endometriosis.
