Tests of a multichannel photometer based on silicon diode detectors
A breadboard photometer was constructed that demonstrates a precision of 2 times 10 to the 4th power in the laboratory and scintillation-limited performance when used with an 0.5 m aperture telescope. Because the detectors and preamps are not cooled, only stars with m sub v approx. less than 4 are bright enough to allow the photometer to attain a precision of 1 times 10 to the 3rd power for three minute observations with an 0.5 m aperature telescope. Cooling the telescope should allow much fainter stars to be observed. Increasing the aperture of the telescope will allow higher precision and the observation of fainter stars

The Department of Housing and Residence Life was looking for ways to improve the quality of their work while saving costs at the same time. The department allowed the team to look over their work orders where the team noticed over 50% of the work orders were related to room turnover. After this discovery, the team focused all efforts on room turnover and went over the process in detail with management. The team asked to see the standard operating procedure for room turnover and learned that most of the staff did not know they had one.
The team wanted to investigate why the staff was not aware of the SOP, so the team met with the assistant director of housing facilities to discuss why the SOP was not in use. He expressed that the SOP was not specific enough to direct the technicians in what the department was looking for. This led the team to begin thinking about creating a new SOP.
After some research, the team learned that reducing variability was a good way of saving costs and that standard operating procedures were a reliable way of reducing variability. The team spoke with the department and reached the decision that a new SOP was the right decision for the department.
The team began by shadowing the technicians to learn how the procedure should be done and where improvements could be made. As the team shadowed, they learned that resident assistants were supposed to be performing the inspections. This inspired the team to continue with creating the SOP but to also fully shift inspection duties to the resident assistants. After discussions with the housing department management, the new SOP created by the team was accepted and the trial runs with resident directors performing the inspections began. The team recommended that the department make the new SOP available to all resident and student assistants to ensure that each inspection was done in the same manner to reduce variability and rework
Service Learning: A Valuable Experience
In this paper, we describe how our department recently incorporated a major service learning component into the curriculum. Specifically, we employed participation in the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program as an effective means of experiential and service learning for the past two years for Masters of Accountancy students. We designed a course devoted entirely to serving in a VITA program operated on a local Air Force base. Our experience confirms that service learning can be a powerful tool in teaching. It has enhanced our students’ academic and professional development. It has given significance to our mission and it has strengthened community relationships. However, recent developments have made it difficult for us to maintain this service learning project in its present form. It appears that we, like many other programs, must consider again how to implement service learning as part of our curriculum, but we will do so now with a greater appreciation and enthusiasm for its unique contributions to learning

Long-range coupling and scalable architecture for superconducting flux qubits
Constructing a fault-tolerant quantum computer is a daunting task. Given any
design, it is possible to determine the maximum error rate of each type of
component that can be tolerated while still permitting arbitrarily large-scale
quantum computation. It is an underappreciated fact that including an
appropriately designed mechanism enabling long-range qubit coupling or
transport substantially increases the maximum tolerable error rates of all
components. With this thought in mind, we take the superconducting flux qubit
coupling mechanism described in PRB 70, 140501 (2004) and extend it to allow
approximately 500 MHz coupling of square flux qubits, 50 um a side, at a
distance of up to several mm. This mechanism is then used as the basis of two
scalable architectures for flux qubits taking into account crosstalk and
fault-tolerant considerations such as permitting a universal set of logical
gates, parallelism, measurement and initialization, and data mobility.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure

Suppression of electron emission from metal electrodes : LDRD 28771 final report.
This research consisted of testing surface treatment processes for stainless steel and aluminum for the purpose of suppressing electron emission over large surface areas to improve the pulsed high voltage hold-off capabilities of these metals. Improvements to hold-off would be beneficial to the operation of the vacuum-insulator grading rings and final self-magnetically insulated transmission line on the ZR-upgrade machine and other pulsed power applications such as flash radiograph and pulsed-microwave machines. The treatments tested for stainless steel include the Z-protocol (chemical polish, HVFF, and gold coating), pulsed E-beam surface treatments by IHCE, Russia, and chromium oxide coatings. Treatments for aluminum were anodized and polymer coatings. Breakdown thresholds also were measured for a range of surface finishes and gap distances. The study found that: (1.) Electrical conditioning and solvent cleaning in a filtered air environment each improve HV hold-off 30%. (2.) Anodized coatings on aluminum give a factor of two improvement in high voltage hold-off. However, anodized aluminum loses this improvement when the damage is severe. Chromium oxide coatings on stainless steel give a 40% and 20% improvement in hold-off before and after damage from many arcs. (3.) Bare aluminum gives similar hold-off for surface roughness, R{sub a}, ranging from 0.08 to 3.2 {micro}m. (4.) The various EBEST surfaces tested give high voltage hold-off a factor of two better than typical machined and similar to R{sub a} = 0.05 {micro}m polished stainless steel surfaces. (5.) For gaps > 2 mm the hold-off voltage increases as the square root of the gap for bare metal surfaces. This is inconsistent with the accepted model for metals that involves E-field induced electron emission from dielectric inclusions. Micro-particles accelerated across the gap during the voltage pulse give the observed voltage dependence. However the similarity in observed breakdown times for large and small gaps places a requirement that the particles be of molecular size. This makes accelerated micro-particle induced breakdown seem improbable also
Statistical learning methods as a preprocessing step for survival analysis: evaluation of concept using lung cancer data
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Statistical learning (SL) techniques can address non-linear relationships and small datasets but do not provide an output that has an epidemiologic interpretation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A small set of clinical variables (CVs) for stage-1 non-small cell lung cancer patients was used to evaluate an approach for using SL methods as a preprocessing step for survival analysis. A stochastic method of training a probabilistic neural network (PNN) was used with differential evolution (DE) optimization. Survival scores were derived stochastically by combining CVs with the PNN. Patients (n = 151) were dichotomized into favorable (n = 92) and unfavorable (n = 59) survival outcome groups. These PNN derived scores were used with logistic regression (LR) modeling to predict favorable survival outcome and were integrated into the survival analysis (i.e. Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression). The hybrid modeling was compared with the respective modeling using raw CVs. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (Az) was used to compare model predictive capability. Odds ratios (ORs) and hazard ratios (HRs) were used to compare disease associations with 95% confidence intervals (CIs).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The LR model with the best predictive capability gave Az = 0.703. While controlling for gender and tumor grade, the OR = 0.63 (CI: 0.43, 0.91) per standard deviation (SD) increase in age indicates increasing age confers unfavorable outcome. The hybrid LR model gave Az = 0.778 by combining age and tumor grade with the PNN and controlling for gender. The PNN score and age translate inversely with respect to risk. The OR = 0.27 (CI: 0.14, 0.53) per SD increase in PNN score indicates those patients with decreased score confer unfavorable outcome. The tumor grade adjusted hazard for patients above the median age compared with those below the median was HR = 1.78 (CI: 1.06, 3.02), whereas the hazard for those patients below the median PNN score compared to those above the median was HR = 4.0 (CI: 2.13, 7.14).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We have provided preliminary evidence showing that the SL preprocessing may provide benefits in comparison with accepted approaches. The work will require further evaluation with varying datasets to confirm these findings.</p
