Model parameter uncertainty estimation based on Bayesian inference for activated sludge model under aerobic conditions: a comparison with a linear theory method

The purpose of the study is to apply Bayesian inference in order to estimate the uncertainty in model parameters and predictions for environmental models. The analysis was based on a global optimization routine that finds good initial values for an adaptive Markov chains Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm that finally computes the posterior parameter distribution. A revised activated sludge model was used in order to perform a comparison between Bayesian and linear theory methods. It was observed that the linear theory method systematically underestimates the confidence intervals of the estimated model parameters because the multivariate normality assumption is violated and practical unidentifiability for some parameters occurs.Postprint (published version

A model for the simulation of the SHARON process: pH as a key factor

The SHARON process permits the partial nitrification of wastewaters with high ammonium content and coupled with the Anammox process represents a more sustainable alternative for N removal than a typical nitrification-denitrification. A mathematical model describing a continuously aerated SHARON reactor for the treatment of landfill leachate is presented. Haldane kinetics are used in both steps of the nitrification since ammonium-oxidizing and nitrite-oxidizing organisms are inhibited by their own substrates. Special attention is given to pH because it is a key factor, implementing an algorithm for its calculation. A preliminary calibration of the model using synthetic feed is presented.Postprint (published version

Los modelos matemáticos se han convertido en una herramienta básica para aumentar la comprensión de los procesos biológicos relacionados con el tratamiento de residuos orgánicos. En este sentido, la modelación permite crear un lenguaje de comunicación común, orientar el diseño experimental, evaluar resultados, contrastar hipótesis, revelar relaciones entre variables, prever la evolución de sistemas y, en definitiva, diseñar estrategias de gestión y tratamiento optimizados.
