Farm buildings and working conditions on goat farms: the current situation in Trás-os-Montes (Portugal) and future developments
In the region of Trás-os-Montes (Portugal) goat breeding is a fairly significant activity, not
only in terms of meat and milk production, but also because breeders operate within an
underdeveloped region where agriculture is the main activity and alternative economic
activities are extremely scarce. Goats are raised in extensive systems; flocks are small
and sourced mainly from local breeds. Generally, buildings and facilities are simple,
supplying shelter and meeting the basic needs of the animals.
Breeders' association and producers are keen to develop goat raising and improve goat
products. We worked with these stakeholders to carry out studies to characterize farm
buildings used in goat farms; to identify the constraints and deficiencies of these
buildings; to study the work and tasks performed by the breeders inside these buildings;
and to improve milking and working conditions on goat farms.
Many buildings have limiting features and lack adequate facilities or equipment. In future,
it is advisable to provide technical support to breeders in order to improve buildings and
goat housing conditions
Numa região desfavorecida e despovoada, principalmente no meio rural, a
In Trás-os-Montes, Northeastern Portugal, dairy goats are mainly from a local breed call “Serrana”. Goats are
raised in small flocks, and are hand-milked inside the shelters and there are no places specifically for milking
neither equipments or facilities to do this work. From 2002 to 2004, we developed a project with the aim of
improving milking and working conditions on Serrana goat farms, regarding the breeders' socio-economic
conditions. After that, several breeders have introduced milking innovations and adopted new equipments or
milking facilities
arrefecimento
Developing a set of strategies, in Portugal, to monitor and prevent damages in animal housing, due to hot climate conditions
In Portugal, animal production (mainly meat and milk) represents 32% of the Agriculture Domestic Product and, in some regions, its socio-economic importance is quite relevant.
Located in Southwestern Europe, Portugal has a mediterranean climate: Winter is cold and wet. Summer is hot and dry particularly in Alentejo and northeastern regions. Significantly high temperatures combined with dry air (or even wet air) may bring about serious problems or damage to livestock and losses to the farmer. In Portugal, it is estimated that 20% of the annual losses in animal production are due to adverse climatic factors or deficient regulation in indoor climatization of animal housing. The situation is most problematic in summer when very high temperatures occur.
According to the HWDI (Heat Wave Duration Index) since 2000, in Portugal three heat waves have occurred, with temperatures over 40 degrees C. Generally, in all regions, these periods of very high temperatures are combined with dry air (low relative humidity).
In most cases, the buildings are not suitable for animal housing under high temperatures. They lack appropriate equipment to control indoor environmental conditions.
To minimize the effects of these adverse climatic situations on animal production, in Portugal, we intend to carry out a work project to tackle this problem. For that purpose, we intend to develop a set of strategies aiming at:
- collecting information about animal breeding and animal housing;
- identifying the climatic factors that affect livestock, in all portuguese regions;
- evaluating the effects of the climatic factors on animal production, in different regions;
- studying strategies and methods to help farmers cope with the problem;
- establishing a web page to spread information;
To carry out this work we have to organize a multidisciplinary team in order to embrace all different fields of interest related to this problem
Strategies to minimize effects of hot climate conditions on livestock in Portugal. A regional approach
In Portugal, animal production is of major significance, both economically and socially. Livestock are especially important to those regions in which agriculture is the main economic activity. Situated in Southwestern Europe, Portugal has a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry Summer. Livestock farmers have to deal with high temperatures and with their effects on animal production. In most cases, breeders are not prepared to handle animals under high temperatures; they lack facilities and/or knowledge about this problem. We have begun work with the aim of developing strategies to monitor and prevent harm to animals (housed or raised outdoors) during the summer months. We need to identify the Portuguese regions most seriously affected by this problem, as well as where and for how long high temperatures occur most frequently. Both individual days with very high temperatures and heat waves are becoming more and more common in Portugal. The past four summers have been among the hottest ever registered. Since 2003, eight heat waves have occurred. We chose two locations in Portugal's Northeast to carry out a preliminary study in order to evaluate the occurrence of hot climate conditions in recent years; to develop methods of obtaining that data; and to learn how climatic factors (mainly temperature) evolve over the course of the summer.
We can conclude that in this region livestock are commonly exposed to high temperatures for long periods. It becomes clear that it is necessary to develop strategies to protect animals from the effects of such conditions
Comparison of Four Natural Ventilation Systems in a Mediterranean Greenhouse
Ventilation is one of the most important tools for controlling the greenhouse
climate, influencing the environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity
and carbon dioxide concentration, which affect the development and production of
the crop. Natural ventilation is the result of the action of two natural forces, wind
and thermal buoyancy. The main objectives of this study were to: 1). compare the
behaviour of internal air parameters such as air temperature and humidity in a
greenhouse with different management of natural ventilation and 2). calibrate and
validate a climatic model. The study was based on experiments carried out in a
greenhouse located at the ETSIA-Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, with floor area
of 132 m2. The greenhouse was equipped with roof and side vents along the entire
length. Four different systems (S) were studied, both roof and side openings (S1,
A1=21.3 m2) and only roof openings (S2, A2=12.3 m2; S3, A3=7.9 m2 and S4, A4=4.4
m2). External and internal climatic parameters, such as air temperature, relative
humidity, solar radiation and wind speed were measured and recorded using a data
logger. All the data were recorded during several days for the different systems.
Data of internal air temperature and water vapour pressure difference were
analysed and compared between the different systems. In this study, ventilation rates
were calculated using a model based on wind and buoyancy forces, assuming that total
ventilation is due to the combined effect of both natural forces. Ventilation rates were
then related to internal air conditions. Temperature differences between inside and
outside varied within a range of 3.3 ºC (S1) and 10.6 ºC (S4), presenting an inverse
proportionality to the ventilation area. The vapour pressure difference presented the
highest value (0.111 kPa) for S2 and the lowest (0.011 kPa) for S3. A climatic model,
based on energy and mass balances, allowing the prediction of internal air
temperature and relative humidity, was calibrated and validated for the different
ventilation systems. Partial data were used to calibrate the model and another set of
data from different periods was used for model validation. Measured and predicted
data were comparatively close
Forced ventilation and evaporative cooling of waiting and milking areas and its influence on the physiological and production responses of crossbred Holstein × Zebu cows
The main objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of forced ventilation and evaporative cooling on the physiological and production responses of dairy cows Holstein × Zebu.
Experiments were conducted with 32 crossbred cows (Holstein × Zebu) in the same lactation phase, mean daily production of 17 kg and mean body weight of 550 kg. Four different treatments were randomly assigned to groups with eight cows each. The treatments were: Evaporative cooling in the waiting room + forced ventilation with Evaporative cooling in the milking room (NW+VNM), Evaporative cooling in the waiting room (NW), forced ventilation with Evaporative cooling in the milking room (VNM) and a control treatment without forced ventilation and evaporative cooling (CON). Experimental work was realised in a commercial farm located in the interior of Bahia State, Brazil, during 45 days in January and February.
Climatic data were measured using a meteorological station. Temperature Humidity Index (THI) and Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) were calculated. In order to study animal responses milk production, udder temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature of white and black spots and rectal temperature were measured.
It was observed that the cows under VNM treatment presented higher milk production and lower udder temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature of white and black spots. No significant differences occurred in the rectal temperature. Results showed that forced ventilation and evaporative cooling positively influenced environmental conditions showing the importance of evaporative cooling for dairy cows
