Herbicidan control of water hyacinth at Ere, Ogun State: implications for fish production
A brief account is given of a pilot demonstration of the chemical control of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) at Ere (a channel) in Nigeria using the herbicide glyphosphate. Results suggest that there was an increase in the nutrient content of the channel after herbicide application. This implied an upsurge of available food for fish and other aquatic organisms within the channel after the herbicide application. The decaying water hyacinth mass which sinks into the medium is likely to boost nutrient content, promoting the growth of fish and other aquatic animals. It is concluded that herbicidal control of water hyacinth is possible, especially under specialists' management with the conservation of fish and other non-target aquatic organisms alongside improved fish productio
BOOSTING NON-OIL EXPORT REVENUE IN NIGERIA THROUGH NON-TRADITIONAL AGRICULTURAL EXPORT COMMODITIES: HOW FEASIBLE?
Available data indicated that, some traditional agricultural export commodities like cocoa and
rubber have remained on Nigeria’s agricultural export list, while others like groundnut and
coffee have almost disappeared from the export list. In the same vein, non-traditional
agricultural export commodities like sesame seed and cashew nuts have started featuring
prominently on the export list. In line with theory, the econometric analysis carried out
confirmed that a major policy change, which can provide a boost for agricultural exports, is
the depreciation of the real exchange rate. For all the agricultural export commodities
analyzed in the study, the coefficient of the exchange rate was positive and highly significant
Determinants of behavior of inflation rate in Nigeria
Inflation is an important macroeconomic issue that has continued to dominate discussions
at major economic fora over time. Governments all over the world are concerned
about its rising trend because of its pervasive effect on economic performance. One
intriguing fact about inflation is that it is both the cause and effect of certain policy
actions of government. Several studies have been conducted on the effect of inflation
on economic activities in developing and developed nations, but studies on its cause,
particularly in developing nations, are scant. This paper aims at identifying major factors
that cause inflation in Nigeria. Based on the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL)
estimation method, the study shows empirical support for significant impact of external
debt, exchange rate, fiscal deficits, money supply and economic growth on inflation.
It further shows previous period or lagged inflation rate as a significant determinant
of current inflation rate. However, the study produced no evidence of significant longrun
impact of interest rate on the rate of inflation in Nigeria. The study recommends
economic reforms that target foreign exchange inflow through increased export trade,
as well as a paradigm shift away from deficit budgeting. There is also a need for infrastructural
and institutional reforms to eliminate or, at least, minimize the impact of
structural inequity on output prices
Appraisal of Corporate Internal Governance Mechanism and Banks’ Metrics in Nigeria
This research work observed the relationship between corporate internal governance mechanism
and the financial metrics of banks in Nigeria. Over the years, emphasis has been placed on the
use of eff ective governance to instill corporate discipline in maximizing stakeholders’ value.
Using the performance information of five quoted banks in the Nigerian Stock Exchange with an
aggregate of forty-five observations spanning from 2011 -2019 sample years, this study sheds
some light on the degree of linearity of corporate internal governance measures such as board
size, board composition, board independence, and bank liquidity on financial metrics of banks in
Nigeria. The method of analysis adopted is the panel regression involving fixed eff ect estimation
techniques. The correlation coefficient was used to measure the degree of association between
our governance variables and profitability indices; while a robust estimator involving panel
corrected standard error was applied. The estimated result for board size and board independence
reveals a significant lag eff ect on bank
performance. Board composition appears to have a significant inverse relationship with bank
metrics which further suggests a low acceptance and adherence to cooperate governance by
most banks with its resultant adverse eff ect on the bank metrics. Also, a statistical inverse
relationship between the board size of a bank and its metrics was observed which suggests
that increasing the size of the board of directors of a bank does not guarantee its performance.
Hence, the study recommends that there is need for the regulatory authorities to reassess the
procedures for the appointment of directors to the board in order to ensure uniform standards;
transparency, accountability and stability exist in these financial markets
The Balloon Foot ; A Rare Presentation Of Congenital Constricting Annular Band
We present a case of a rare manifestation of congenital constricting annular band (CAB) in the lower extremity resulting in a severe excessive swelling of the foot which we have termed Balloon foot. The ballooned foot is caused by a progressive deepening of the circumferential constriction into the soft tissue of the lower extremity in region of the ankle. Conventional Z-plasty staged surgical releases of the constriction band was unsuccessful in this case, probably due to extreme and sustained peripheral vascular compromise of the foot from the exerting tourniquet effect of the severe band.
We highlight the presenting features and the poor treatment prognosis.
