Surgical management of giant Brunner's gland hamartoma: case report and literature review
Brunner's gland hamartomas (BGH) are uncommon benign tumors of the duodenum forming mature Brunner's glands. We report here an unusual case of a giant BGH that was not amenable to endoscopic or surgical local resection thus requiring a pancreaticoduodenectomy for extirpation. Systematic and Causal Corrections to the Coherent Potential Approximation
The Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA) is modified to include disorder.
The DCA incorporates non-local corrections to local approximations such as the
Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) by mapping the lattice problem with
disorder, and in the thermodynamic limit, to a self-consistently embedded
finite-sized cluster problem. It satisfies all of the characteristics of a
successful cluster approximation. It is causal, preserves the point-group and
translational symmetry of the original lattice, recovers the CPA when the
cluster size equals one, and becomes exact as . We use the DCA to
study the Anderson model with binary diagonal disorder. It restores sharp
features and band tailing in the density of states which reflect correlations
in the local environment of each site. While the DCA does not describe the

Coronal radiation belts
The magnetic field of the solar corona has a large-scale dipole character,
which maps into the bipolar field in the solar wind. Using standard
representations of the coronal field, we show that high-energy ions can be
trapped stably in these large-scale closed fields. The drift shells that
describe the conservation of the third adiabatic invariant may have complicated
geometries. Particles trapped in these zones would resemble the Van Allen Belts
and could have detectable consequences. We discuss potential sources of trapped
particles
Electronic structure of triangular, hexagonal and round graphene flakes near the Fermi level
The electronic shell structure of triangular, hexagonal and round graphene
quantum dots (flakes) near the Fermi level has been studied using a
tight-binding method. The results show that close to the Fermi level the shell
structure of a triangular flake is that of free massless particles, and that
triangles with an armchair edge show an additional sequence of levels ("ghost
states"). These levels result from the graphene band structure and the plane
wave solution of the wave equation, and they are absent for triangles with an
zigzag edge. All zigzag triangles exhibit a prominent edge state at the Fermi
level, and few low-energy conduction electron states occur both in triangular
and hexagonal flakes due to symmetry reasons. Armchair triangles can be used as
building blocks for other types of flakes that support the ghost states. Edge
roughness has only a small effect on the level structure of the triangular
flakes, but the effect is considerably enhanced in the other types of flakes.
In round flakes, the states near the Fermi level depend strongly on the flake
radius, and they are always localized on the zigzag parts of the edge
Spectral Geometry of Heterotic Compactifications
The structure of heterotic string target space compactifications is studied
using the formalism of the noncommutative geometry associated with lattice
vertex operator algebras. The spectral triples of the noncommutative spacetimes
are constructed and used to show that the intrinsic gauge field degrees of
freedom disappear in the low-energy sectors of these spacetimes. The quantum
geometry is thereby determined in much the same way as for ordinary superstring
target spaces. In this setting, non-abelian gauge theories on the classical
spacetimes arise from the K-theory of the effective target spaces.Comment: 14 pages LaTe
The Richardson's Law in Large-Eddy Simulations of Boundary Layer flows
Relative dispersion in a neutrally stratified planetary boundary layer (PBL)
is investigated by means of Large-Eddy Simulations (LES). Despite the small
extension of the inertial range of scales in the simulated PBL, our Lagrangian
statistics turns out to be compatible with the Richardson law for the
average of square particle separation. This emerges from the application of
nonstandard methods of analysis through which a precise measure of the
Richardson constant was also possible. Its values is estimated as
in close agreement with recent experiments and three-dimensional direct

Testing a model of antecedents and consequences of defensive pessimism and self-handicapping in school physical education
There has been very limited research on the use of self-worth protection strategies in the achievement context of school physical education (PE). Thus, this study aimed to examine some antecedents and consequences of defensive pessimism and self-handicapping. The sample comprised 534 (females n = 275; males n = 259) British pupils recruited from two schools who responded to established questionnaires. Results of structural equation modelling analysis indicated that self-handicapping and defensive pessimism were positively predicted by fear of failure and negatively predicted by competence valuation. In addition, defensive pessimism was negatively predicted by physical self-concept. In turn, defensive pessimism negatively predicted enjoyment in PE and intentions to participate in future optional PE programs. Self-handicapping did not predict enjoyment or intentions. Results from multi-sample structural equation modelling showed the specified model to be largely invariant across males and females. The findings indicate that although both strategies aim to protect one’s self-worth, some of their antecedents and consequences in PE may differ
