Multi-messenger astronomy of gravitational-wave sources with flexible wide-area radio transient surveys
We explore opportunities for multi-messenger astronomy using gravitational
waves (GWs) and prompt, transient low-frequency radio emission to study highly
energetic astrophysical events. We review the literature on possible sources of
correlated emission of gravitational waves and radio transients, highlighting
proposed mechanisms that lead to a short-duration, high-flux radio pulse
originating from the merger of two neutron stars or from a superconducting
cosmic string cusp. We discuss the detection prospects for each of these
mechanisms by low-frequency dipole array instruments such as LWA1, LOFAR and
MWA. We find that a broad range of models may be tested by searching for radio
pulses that, when de-dispersed, are temporally and spatially coincident with a
LIGO/Virgo GW trigger within a \usim 30 second time window and \usim 200
\mendash 500 \punits{deg}^{2} sky region. We consider various possible
observing strategies and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Uniquely,
for low-frequency radio arrays, dispersion can delay the radio pulse until
after low-latency GW data analysis has identified and reported an event
candidate, enabling a \emph{prompt} radio signal to be captured by a
deliberately targeted beam. If neutron star mergers do have detectable prompt
radio emissions, a coincident search with the GW detector network and
low-frequency radio arrays could increase the LIGO/Virgo effective search
volume by up to a factor of \usim 2. For some models, we also map the

The nature and prevalence of psychological problems in New Zealand primary healthcare: a report on Mental Health and General Practice Investigation ( MaGPIe)
Aims This paper describes the methods used in a study of the prevalence and types of common mental disorders among patients attending New Zealand general practices, and reports some key findings from the first phase of the study. The study also aimed to determine the degree of associated disability and other factors influencing recognition, management, course and outcome of these disorders, and subsequent papers will address these issues. Methods General practitioners (GPs) were selected randomly. In the first phase of the study, all adult attenders at each practice on selected days were administered a short questionnaire, the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), which screens for psychological symptoms. The GP recorded the reasons for each consultation, and was interviewed at the end of each day about selected patients to determine their opinion about the type of psychological problems experienced. Selected patients were then visited in their own homes and an extensive interview conducted, which included the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) to determine mental health status, the World Health Organization’s Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS) to determine disability, and a detailed exploration of use of health services. In the second phase of the study, patients were contacted by telephone at three, six, nine and 12 months, and both patients and GPs were re-interviewed at 12 months. Results The study achieved a very high response rate among the GPs (90%). Nearly all eligible patients (93%) completed the GHQ screening, and their response rate was 70% for the first-phase interview. GPs thought that 54% of female and 46% of male patients had experienced some level of psychological problems in the past year. GHQ screening also found that more than half of those attending their general practitioner experienced some psychological symptoms at initial screening, and the CIDI interview found that more than one in three had a diagnosable mental disorder during the past 12 months. The most common mental disorders were depressive, anxiety and substance use disorders. These disorders were more common among younger than older general practice attenders, and comorbidity was high. Conclusions Mental health problems are very common among general practice attenders. Contrary to the prevailing view that general practitioners seldom identify psychological problems in their patients, they identified about half their patients as having some type of psychological problems in the past year, although they considered that these were moderate or severe in about only one in ten patients. Further work from this large New Zealand study will focus on the nature of the relationship between disorder and disability, and on the recognition, management and outcome of psychological problems
Observations of Giant Pulses from Pulsar PSR B0950+08 using LWA1
We report the detection of giant pulse emission from PSR B0950+08 in 24 hours
of observations made at 39.4 MHz, with a bandwidth of 16 MHz, using the first
station of the Long Wavelength Array, LWA1. We detected 119 giant pulses from
PSR B0950+08 (at its dispersion measure), which we define as having SNRs at
least 10 times larger than for the mean pulse in our data set. These 119 pulses
are 0.035% of the total number of pulse periods in the 24 hours of
observations. The rate of giant pulses is about 5.0 per hour. The cumulative
distribution of pulse strength is a steep power law, , but much less steep than would be expected if we were observing the
tail of a Gaussian distribution of normal pulses. We detected no other
transient pulses in a dispersion measure range from 1 to 90 pc cm, in
the beam tracking PSR B0950+08. The giant pulses have a narrower temporal width
than the mean pulse (17.8 ms, on average, vs. 30.5 ms). The pulse widths are
consistent with a previously observed weak dependence on observing frequency,
which may be indicative of a deviation from a Kolmogorov spectrum of electron
density irregularities along the line of sight. The rate and strength of these
giant pulses is less than has been observed at 100 MHz. Additionally, the
mean (normal) pulse flux density we observed is less than at 100 MHz.
These results suggest this pulsar is weaker and produces less frequent giant
pulses at 39 MHz than at 100 MHz.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, typos correcte
The Incidence of Norovirus-Associated Gastroenteritis Outbreaks in Victoria, Australia (2002–2007) and Their Relationship with Rainfall
The relationship between the incidence of norovirus-associated gastroenteritis outbreaks (NAGOs) in Victoria, Australia for the period 2002–2007 and rainfall was examined. Statistical analysis involving the correlation between time series indicated that there was a statistically significant (p < 0.05) correlation between monthly NAGO incidence and average monthly rainfall. There was a lag of an average of about three months between peak average rainfall and a NAGO epidemic. The findings thus indicate rainfall can influence NAGO incidence. In an era where there is concern about the potential effects of global warming on weather patterns, it should be borne in mind that future changes in NAGO incidence may reflect altered world weather patterns
CMB polarimetry with BICEP: instrument characterization, calibration, and performance
BICEP is a ground-based millimeter-wave bolometric array designed to target
the primordial gravity wave signature on the polarization of the cosmic
microwave background (CMB) at degree angular scales. Currently in its third
year of operation at the South Pole, BICEP is measuring the CMB polarization
with unprecedented sensitivity at 100 and 150 GHz in the cleanest available 2%
of the sky, as well as deriving independent constraints on the diffuse
polarized foregrounds with select observations on and off the Galactic plane.
Instrument calibrations are discussed in the context of rigorous control of
systematic errors, and the performance during the first two years of the

Absolute polarization angle calibration using polarized diffuse Galactic emission observed by BICEP
We present a method of cross-calibrating the polarization angle of a
polarimeter using BICEP Galactic observations. \bicep\ was a ground based
experiment using an array of 49 pairs of polarization sensitive bolometers
observing from the geographic South Pole at 100 and 150 GHz. The BICEP
polarimeter is calibrated to +/-0.01 in cross-polarization and less than +/-0.7
degrees in absolute polarization orientation. BICEP observed the temperature
and polarization of the Galactic plane (R.A= 100 degrees ~ 270 degrees and Dec.
= -67 degrees ~ -48 degrees). We show that the statistical error in the 100 GHz
BICEP Galaxy map can constrain the polarization angle offset of WMAP Wband to
0.6 degrees +\- 1.4 degrees. The expected 1 sigma errors on the polarization
angle cross-calibration for Planck or EPIC are 1.3 degrees and 0.3 degrees at
100 and 150 GHz, respectively. We also discuss the expected improvement of the
BICEP Galactic field observations with forthcoming BICEP2 and Keck

Radiation hardness and lifetime studies of photodiodes for the optical readout of the ATLAS semiconductor tracker
A large sample (96) of epitaxial Si PIN photodiodes has been irradiated by ~1 MeV neutrons and 24 GeV protons with fluences up to 10E15 equivalent 1 MeV neutrons per square cm in order to test their suitability for use in the optical readout of the ATLAS semiconductor tracker and pixel detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. After an initial reduction of 30the responsivity remains constant up to the maximum fluence. The rise and fall times are not significantly affected and remain below 1 ns. Although the dark current increases linearly with increasing neutron fluence, its level remains below 100 nA which is negligible in comparison to the operating photocurrent which is above 100 microamps. Enhance ageing studies at 60 degrees C have also been carried out and no failure has occurred after an equivalent of 360 years of operation
Organisational barriers to the facilitation of overseas volunteering and training placements in the NHS
Background
Undertaking a period of voluntary work or a professional placement overseas has long been a feature of medical training in the UK. There are now a number of high profile National Health Service (NHS) initiatives aimed at increasing access to such opportunities for staff at all levels. We present findings from a qualitative study involving a range of NHS staff and other stakeholders which explored barriers to participation in these activities.
Methods
A grounded theory methodology was drawn upon to conduct thematic based analysis. Our data included in-depth, semi-structured interviews with a range of returned volunteers, non-volunteers and other stakeholders (n=51) who were, or had been, employed by the NHS.
Results
There are significant barriers to placement and volunteering activity stemming from structural and organisational shortcomings within the NHS. Difficulties in filling clinical roles has a significant impact on the ability of staff to plan and undertake independent placements. There is currently no clearly defined pathway within the NHS by which the majority of grades can apply for, or organise, a period of overseas voluntary or professional placement activity. There were divergent views on the relevance and usefulness of overseas professional placements.
Conclusions
We argue that in the context of current UK policy initiatives aimed at facilitating overseas volunteer and professional placement activity, urgent attention needs to be given to the structural and organisational framework within which such initiatives will be required to work
