    No full text
The objective of the project 'TEMPUS coil tests on KC-135' was the test of the optimized TEMPUS coil systems under microgravity conditions as well as a preliminary selection of the flight coil system for the MSL-1 mission. In previous projects the coil design was optimized for strong positioner forces at minimized heat input into the sample and for a homogeneous heater field. Prior to the KC135 campaign 3 coil systems of types E2, E3 and E4 were available. In order to test the performance of each coil, the KC135 facility was set up in Houston. During the flight campaign each of the 3 coil systems was tested during one flight. The tests comprised positioning tests with solid samples as well as melting tests with standard samples. On the fourth flight the coil system E2 which had previously shown the best results was retested. Based on these results the coil system E2 was selected as the baseline for further development. The study 'Atmos Programme Support' comprises parts of the national Atmos programme for terrestrial observation and for acquisition of environmentally relevant scientific data of the fields of land, water, and air. In particular, the investigation is to support the national organisation DARA in the development of the instrument AMAS (Advanced Millimeterwave Atmospheric Sounder) and in the identification of missions in which AMAS could take part. An adapted configuration was developed for AMAS as part of the payload during Atmos Phase B1. Parallel to Atmos Phase B2, further design investigations of AMAS were made, but no further adaptation of the configuration. As a result, it became necessary in the configuration on the one hand to take account of the latest design developments and on the other hand to adapt the accomodation to a possible carrier platform. Both POEM/Envisat and other (Russian) carriers are possible. Another aspect is the development of AMAS in the framework of a cost-sharing cooperation. AMAS Phase B2. Final report

    No full text
Our environment is being seriously affected by human activity. Of particular concern is the reduction of the ozone layer due to continuous release of man made substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's). Recent measurement campaigns show a dramatically increased concentration of chlorine monoxide (ClO) and an alarmingly thin ozone layer over the northern hemisphere. From this measurement data it is obvious that further monitoring and understanding of the complex chemistry of the middle atmosphere are of great importance. Collecting the necessary reliable, global data is best done by using spaceborne limb sounding instruments. The Advanced Millimeter-Wave Atmospheric Sounder AMAS as described in this report is an improved version of MAS, which is presently part of the NASA-ATLAS Space Shuttle payload. AMAS, which is proposed for a polar sun synchronous orbit, shall provide a nearly complete picture of the chlorine chemistry with respect to global ozone destruction. This final report of the Phase B2 describes in detail the technical concept of AMAS which is proposed for development and manufacture, and describes the system engineering approach that led to this concept. Refurbishment der Mehrzweckanlagen ELLI und GFQ. Phase C/D Schlussbericht

    No full text
The multi-user-facilities ELLI and GFQ had been developed for their first (successful) operation within the playload-element MEDEA during the Spacelab-mission D1. Within the project the facilities have been prepared by a thorough refurbishment for their reflight with the Spacelab-mission D2. In parallel to the general refurbishment work the facilities have been modified, in the case of ELLI to a large extent. The reasons for the modifications are: -Experiences from the D1-mission; - changed mission requirements, - changed experiment-spectra. The engineering models also have been refurbished and modified correspondingly. By a nearly complete verification program the facilities have been qualified for the D2-mission. ATMOS is a remote sensing satellite in a sunsynchronous polar orbit carrying four instruments for research and surveillance in the fields of global atmospheric and biospheric environment. This report deals with the technical aspects of the phase B2 which was performed by an industrial team led by Dornier as prime contractor under the direction of DARA. Based on updated requirements the system design, as well as the design of the subsystems, was revised and detailed. The interfaces, the environmental conditions, the AIV (Assembly, Integration and Verification) approach, the operational concept, the requirements on tests, on EMC (Electro-Magnetic Copatibility), on cleanliness, on ground support equipment, on instruments and on subsystems and units were defined and specified. Specifications were written accordingly. The efforts during the Phase B2 brought ATMOS to the state whereby a Phase C/D could almost immediately begin. The objective of the project 'Reverification of TEMPUS Coil System on Parabolic Flights' was the demonstration of the capability of the optimized TEMPUS coil system to stably position liquid samples under microgravity conditions as well as a final selection of the flight coil system for the MSL-1 mission. In previous projects the coil design was optimized for strong positioner forces at minimized heat input into the sample and for a homogeneous heater field which exerts only very small forces and torques on the samples. Furthermore, the permanent magnet system was optimized for damping of sample rotations. Prior to the KC135 campaign 3 similar coil systems of the E2 type were available. In order to test the performance of each coil, the KC135 facility was set up in Houston, and coupling tests with MSL-1 type samples were performed on the ground. During the flight campaign each of the 3 coil system was tested during one flight day. The tests comprised positioning tests with solid samples as well as melting and undercooling tests with liquid samples. On the fourth flight day the coil system E2a3 which had previously shown the best results was reflown. On that day test samples were routinely processed, melted and undercooled up to 200 C despite very strong microgravity disturbances. Based on these results the coil system E2a3 was selected as the flight coil system for the MSL-1 flight of the TEMPUS facility. In addition, prototype sample holders for the Spacelab flight were manufactured and tested for thermal shock resistance. The principal design of the flight sample holders was defined based on the requirements of the principal investigators. TEMPUS MSL-1 Experimentatorenunterstuetzung Schlussbericht

    No full text
The sample holders for the MSL-1 mission of TEMPUS were developed, manufactured and tested in the framework of this Experiment Support Project. Three sample holder types for the different experiment classed were developed: sample holders with a horizontal slit for the radial observation of strongly evaporating samples, sample holders with crossed slits for the observation of the nucleation front motion and cage sample holders for weakly evaporating samples for which a good radial observation was of special importance. In a prototype test program sample holders were build from different materials. Tests were performed with these prototypes, e.g. thermal shock tests with liquid sample materials at temperatures of up to 2000 C, vibration tests and tests of the coupling of the sample holders to the RF fields of the leviation coils. As a result, silicon nitride was selected as the material for the flight sample holders. After the Design Review sample holders were custom made for each of the flight experiments. In addition, a Ti-sample was integrated into a sample holder which was used as a sublimation pump during the mission. The sample holders were cleaned and shipped for sample integration to the Kennedy Space Center in special transport containers in an ultrapure noble gas atmosphere. In addition, parameter sets were developed for the new subsystems Residual Gas Analyzer and Active Sample Oscillation Damping. The parameter set development at DLR as well as the operation of the TEMPUS Development Model at DLR was supported by Dornier.
