Narrowband organic photodetectors-towards miniaturized, spectroscopic sensing
Omnipresent quality monitoring in food products, blood-oxygen measurement in lightweight conformal wrist bands, or data-driven automated industrial production: Innovation in many fields is being empowered by sensor technology. Specifically, organic photodetectors (OPDs) promise great advances due to their beneficial properties and low-cost production. Recent research has led to rapid improvement in all performance parameters of OPDs, which are now on-par or better than their inorganic counterparts, such as silicon or indium gallium arsenide photodetectors, in several aspects. In particular, it is possible to directly design OPDs for specific wavelengths. This makes expensive and bulky optical filters obsolete and allows for miniature detector devices. In this review, recent progress of such narrowband OPDs is systematically summarized covering all aspects from narrow-photo-absorbing materials to device architecture engineering. The recent challenges for narrowband OPDs, like achieving high responsivity, low dark current, high response speed, and good dynamic range are carefully addressed. Finally, application demonstrations covering broadband and narrowband OPDs are discussed. Importantly, several exciting research perspectives, which will stimulate further research on organic-semiconductor-based photodetectors, are pointed out at the very end of this review
Direct determination of spin orbit interaction coefficients and realization of the persistent spin helix symmetry
The spin orbit interaction plays a crucial role in diverse fields of
condensed matter, including the investigation of Majorana fermions, topological
insulators, quantum information and spintronics. In III V zinc blende
semiconductor heterostructures, two types of spin orbit interaction, Rashba and
Dresselhaus act on the electron spin as effective magnetic fields with
different directions. They are characterized by coefficients alpha and beta,
respectively. When alpha is equal to beta, the so called persistent spin helix
symmetry is realized. In this condition, invariance with respect to spin
rotations is achieved even in the presence of the spin orbit interaction,
implying strongly enhanced spin lifetimes for spatially periodic spin modes.
Existing methods to evaluate alpha/beta require fitting analyses that often
include ambiguity in the parameters used. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a
simple and fitting parameter free technique to determine alpha/beta and to
deduce the absolute values of alpha and beta. The method is based on the
detection of the effective magnetic field direction and the strength induced by
the two spin orbit interactions. Moreover, we observe the persistent spin helix

An experiment for the measurement of the bound-beta decay of the free neutron
The hyperfine-state population of hydrogen after the bound-beta decay of the
neutron directly yields the neutrino left-handedness or a possible right-handed
admixture and possible small scalar and tensor contributions to the weak force.
Using the through-going beam tube of a high-flux reactor, a background free
hydrogen rate of ca. 3 s can be obtained. The detection of the neutral
hydrogen atoms and the analysis of the hyperfine states is accomplished by Lamb
shift source type quenching and subsequent ionization. The constraints on the
neutrino helicity and the scalar and tensor coupling constants of weak

What we talk about when we talk about "global mindset": managerial cognition in multinational corporations
Recent developments in the global economy and in multinational corporations have placed significant emphasis on the cognitive orientations of managers, giving rise to a number of concepts such as âglobal mindsetâ that are presumed to be associated with the effective management of multinational corporations (MNCs). This paper reviews the literature on global mindset and clarifies some of the conceptual confusion surrounding the construct. We identify common themes across writers, suggesting that the majority of studies fall into one of three research perspectives: cultural, strategic, and multidimensional. We also identify two constructs from the social sciences that underlie the perspectives found in the literature: cosmopolitanism and cognitive complexity and use these two constructs to develop an integrative theoretical framework of global mindset. We then provide a critical assessment of the field of global mindset and suggest directions for future theoretical and empirical research
SME development strategy and product/service innovation intention
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are tasked with driving economic recovery globally, in terms of contribution to economic growth. Understanding the determinants of SME innovation is essential in clarifying this phenomena. This study investigates the link between SME strategies and intention to undertake future innovation, using Federation of Small Businesses data. The analysis employs the novel N-State Classification and Ranking Belief Simplex (NCaRBS) technique, investigating relationships between changes in SME strategies, including staffing levels, importing/exporting and client base, and future (including uncertain) innovation intentions. NCaRBS can analyse an incomplete data set, with missing values in the considered characteristic variables, without the need to manage their presence. NCaRBS can also generate results providing insights into SME behaviour regarding strategy and innovation, while also increasing learning about potential reasons behind SMEs uncertainty regarding innovation intention. The study provides novel perspectives into how SMEs develop innovation intentions and the strategies required to support/exploit such intentions, of value to academia, enterprise support agencies and policymaker
Academic Performance and Behavioral Patterns
Identifying the factors that influence academic performance is an essential
part of educational research. Previous studies have documented the importance
of personality traits, class attendance, and social network structure. Because
most of these analyses were based on a single behavioral aspect and/or small
sample sizes, there is currently no quantification of the interplay of these
factors. Here, we study the academic performance among a cohort of 538
undergraduate students forming a single, densely connected social network. Our
work is based on data collected using smartphones, which the students used as
their primary phones for two years. The availability of multi-channel data from
a single population allows us to directly compare the explanatory power of
individual and social characteristics. We find that the most informative
indicators of performance are based on social ties and that network indicators
result in better model performance than individual characteristics (including
both personality and class attendance). We confirm earlier findings that class
attendance is the most important predictor among individual characteristics.
Finally, our results suggest the presence of strong homophily and/or peer
effects among university students
Cetuximab plus gemcitabine/oxaliplatin (GEMOXCET) in first-line metastatic pancreatic cancer: a multicentre phase II study
Targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor pathway in pancreatic cancer seems to be an attractive therapeutic approach. This study assessed the efficacy of cetuximab plus the combination of gemcitabine/oxaliplatin in metastatic pancreatic cancer. Eligible subjects had histological or cytological diagnosis of metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The primary end point was response according to RECIST. Patients received cetuximab 400âmgâmâ2 at first infusion followed by weekly 250âmgâmâ2 combined with gemcitabine 1000âmgâmâ2 as a 100âmin infusion on day 1 and oxaliplatin 100âmgâmâ2 as a 2-h infusion on day 2 every 2 weeks. Between January 2005 and August 2006, a total of 64 patients (22 women (34%), 42 men (66%); median age 64 years (range 31â78)) were enrolled at seven study centres. On October 2007, a total of 17 patients were alive. Sixty-two patients were evaluable for baseline and 61 for assessment of response to treatment in an intention-to-treat analysis. Six patients had an incomplete drug combination within the first cycle of the treatment plan (n=4 hypersensitivity reactions to the first cetuximab infusion, n=2 refused to continue therapy). Reported grade 3/4 toxicities (% of patients) were leukopaenia 15%, anaemia 8%, thrombocytopaenia 10%, diarrhoea 7%, nausea 18%, infection 18% and allergy 7%. Cetuximab-attributable skin reactions occurred as follows: grade 0: 20%, grade 1: 41%, grade 2: 30% and grade 3: 10%. The intention-to-treat analysis of 61 evaluable patients showed an overall response rate of 33%, including 1 (2%) complete and 19 (31%) partial remissions. There were 31% patients with stable and 36% with progressive disease or discontinuation of the therapy before re-staging. The presence of a grade 2 or higher skin rash was associated with a higher likelihood of achieving objective response. Median time to progression was 118 days, with a median overall survival of 213 days. A clinical benefit response was noted in 24 of the evaluable 61 patients (39%). The addition of cetuximab to the combination of gemcitabine and oxaliplatin is well tolerated but does not increase response or survival in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer
