    Growth and yield responses of cowpea to inoculation and phosphorus fertilization in different environments

    Open Access Journal; Published: 03 May 2017Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is a major source of dietary protein and essential component of the cropping systems in semi-arid regions of Sub-Saharan Africa. However, yields are very low due to lack of improved cultivars, poor management practices, and limited inputs use. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of rhizobia inoculant and P on nodulation, N accumulation and yield of two cowpea cultivars in Mozambique. Field study was conducted in three contrasting environments during the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 seasons using randomized complete block design with four replications and four treatments. Treatments consisted of seed inoculation, application of 40 kg P2O5 ha-1, inoculation + P, and a non-inoculated control. The most probable number (MPN) technique was used to estimate the indigenous bradyrhizobia populations at the experimental sites. The rhizobia numbers at the sites varied from 5.27 × 102 to 1.07 × 103 cells g-1 soil. Inoculation increased nodule number by 34–76% and doubled nodule dry weight (78 to 160 mg plant-1). P application improved nodulation and interacted positively with the inoculant. Inoculation, P, and inoculant + P increased shoot dry weight, and shoot and grain N content across locations but increases in number of pods plant-1, seeds pod-1, and 100-seed weight were not consistent among treatments across locations. Shoot N content was consistently high for the inoculated plants and also for the inoculated + P fertilized plants, whereas the non-inoculated control plants had the lowest tissue N content. P uptake in shoot ranged from 1.72 to 3.77 g kg-1 and was higher for plants that received P fertilizer alone. Inoculation and P either alone or in combination consistently increased cowpea grain yield across locations with yields ranging from 1097 kg ha-1 for the non-inoculated control to 1674 kg ha-1 for the inoculant + P treatment. Grain protein concentration followed a similar trend as grain yield and ranged from 223 to 252 g kg-1 but a negative correlation between grain yield and protein concentration was observed. Inoculation increased net returns by $104–163 ha-1 over that for the control. The results demonstrate the potential of improving cowpea grain yield, quality and profitability using inoculant, although the cost-benefit for using P at the current fertilizer price is not attractive except when applied together with inoculant at low P site

    Inoculant Formulation and Application Determine Nitrogen Availability and Water Use Efficiency in Soybean Production

    Inoculation of suitable rhizobia enhances biological nitrogen fixation in soybean production and are economically viable for use among smallholder farmers due to its low price over inorganic commercial fertilizer blends. In Mozambique, inoculants are available in liquid or solid form (powder/peat or granular). Field studies were conducted in 2017 and 2018 seasons in three agroecologies (Angonia, Nampula and Ruace) in Mozambique to evaluate the performance of inoculants when applied directly to soil and on seed before planting. Data on nodulation, plant growth, nitrogen fixed, 13C isotope discrimination related water use efficiency, yield and yield components were analyzed in Statistical Analysis System® 9.4. Nodulation, yield, and yield components were significant for the different application methods, and solid form tended to be better than liquid form. The nitrogen derived from atmosphere (%Ndfa) were 45.3%, 44.2% and 43.6% with a yield of 2672, 1752 and 2246 kg ha−1 for Angonia, Nampula and Ruace, respectively. Overall, inoculants applied on soil or seed increase the amount of biologically fixed nitrogen and has the potential of improving soybean productivity in Mozambique

    Strategic Foresight analysis of droughts in southern Africa and implications for food security

    Southern Africa has been experiencing long-term changes in its climate and future projections imply that droughts should last longer and become more intense in southern Africa. Already, the region has been experiencing an increase in consecutive drought years. This study contributes to the literature by using bio-economic modeling to simulate the impact of future droughts on food security in southern Africa and identify plausible pathways for enhancing regional food security under drought. Food production and food security in southern Africa were projected under drought using an adjusted version of a multi-market and multi-commodity global model, the International Model for the Policy Analysis of Agricultural Commodities and Trade (IMPACT), version 3.2. The results suggest that with moderate economic growth and no drought, southern Africa would not become wealthy enough to mitigate food insecurity by 2040. In this context, recurrent droughts would worsen food security by severely affecting the production of maize, the key staple food in the region. With consecutive two-year regional droughts, like what was experienced in 2014/15 and 2015/16, most countries would experience an increase of at least 10% in the number of people at risk of hunger within a single year. Key measures which could help enhance food security under droughts include (1) breeding for stress-resilient maize (resistance to both heat and drought stresses); (2) promote crop and diet diversification, especially in countries highly dependent on maize as a staple food crop; and (3) invest in rainwater harvesting

    Case studies of gender equality and social inclusion success stories in Zambia's agribusiness sector

    This report presents case studies of success stories of value chain actors who operate in Zambia’s agribusiness sector to promote gender equality and social inclusion. Potential success stories were identified during a stakeholder workshop on gender equality and social inclusion in the agribusiness ecosystem for multidimensional mapping of opportunities and challenges held in September 2022 in Lusaka. Some of these stories were then selected from different value chains for follow-up by the research team. Interviews with the value chain actors in these stories were arranged and conducted in early 2023

    Estimation of medium-term soil redistribution rates in Ibadan, Nigeria, by using the 137 Cs technique

    Soil erosion is a widespread and serious problem in Nigeria, West Africa. The 137 Cs technique is an alternative to field plots for generating data on medium-term soil redistri bution. It was tested in 2007 in Ibadan, Nigeria, which means the firs t time in the derived savanna. To analyse the vertical and spatial distribution of this nuclide in the soil, core samples were taken either randomly or along transects in an uncultivated and a cultivated site. The study showed an accumulation of 137 Cs near the soil surface and a slow decr ease with depth in the undisturbed site. The arable land was characterized by an almost uniform 137 Cs distribution within the ploughed layer. The reference inventory of 137 Cs determined on the uncultivated site was 569.3 ± 150.1 Bq m -2 ; the inventory of 137 Cs on the field ranged from 96.9 to 1494.4 Bq m -2 . Comparisons with the reference inventory showed smaller values for the upper slope and higher values for the lower slope of the cultivated site, wh ich indicated soil redistribution. The conversion of the inventories into quantitative data of erosi on and deposition by a proportion model revealed, for example, that about 148.5 t ha -1 yr -1 were eroded from the cropland in furrows leading downslope. The estimated results were comparable to erosion measurements made nearby. Hence, the 137 Cs technique is useful as a method to generate data on soil redistribution a nd therefore a tool for improved natural resource management in Nigeria

    Analysis of adoption of conservation agriculture practices in southern Africa: mixed-methods approach

    In southern Africa, conservation agriculture (CA) has been promoted to address low agricultural productivity, food insecurity, and land degradation. However, despite significant experimental evidence on the agronomic and economic benefits of CA and large scale investments by the donor community and national governments, adoption rates among smallholders remain below expectation. The main objective of this research project was thus to investigate why previous efforts and investments to scale CA technologies and practices in southern Africa have not led to widespread adoption. The paper applies a multivariate probit model and other methods to survey data from 4,373 households and 278 focus groups to identify the drivers and barriers of CA adoption in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The results show that declining soil fertility is a major constraint to maize production in Zambia and Malawi, and drought/heat is more pronounced in Zimbabwe. We also find gaps between (a) awareness and adoption, (b) training and adoption, and (c) demonstration and adoption rates of CA practices in all three countries. The gaps are much bigger between awareness and adoption and much smaller between hosting demonstration and adoption, suggesting that much of the awareness of CA practices has not translated to greater adoption. Training and demonstrations are better conduits to enhance adoption than mere awareness creation. Therefore, demonstrating the applications and benefits of CA practices is critical for promoting CA practices in all countries. Besides, greater adoption of CA practices requires enhancing farmers’ access to inputs, addressing drudgery associated with CA implementation, enhancing farmers’ technical know-how, and enacting and enforcing community bylaws regarding livestock grazing and wildfires. The paper concludes by discussing the implications for policy and investments in CA promotion

    Willingness to pay for agricultural mechanization services by smallholder farmers in Malawi

    One of the main barriers to adopting smallholder agricultural mechanization in developing countries is the mismatch between the economies of scale of machines and farm size. Private sector-led mechanization services hold a promise to address this challenge, but there is a lack of evidence on demand for smallholder mechanization services. This study estimates the farmers' willingness to pay for mechanization services using the double-bounded contingent valuation method and data from 1512 households. Results show that, on average, farmers are willing to pay 11%, 33%, and 5% more than prevailing market rates for land preparation, maize shelling, and transportation services, respectively. The amounts farmers are willing to pay for the mechanization services vary by sex, age group, size of cultivated land, the value of farmer assets, market access, and agroecology. Men are willing to pay 26%, 25%, and 11% more than women for land preparation, maize shelling, and transportation services. Moreover, 40% of female and 90% of male farmers are willing to pay more than or equal to the prevailing market rate for land preparation services. The high demand for mechanization services among smallholder farmers points to the need for making the machinery available to rural communities through mechanization service providers or machinery hiring centers run by the private sector.     Symbiotic effectiveness of Bradyrhizobium strains on soybean growth and productivity in Northern Mozambique

    Inoculation of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] with rhizobia strains is a low-cost investment which can increase yields of smallholder farmers in Mozambique. The performance of four Bradyrhizobium strains was evaluated to identify the best strain to inoculate soybean grown in different agro-ecologies. Field experiments were conducted in three ecological zones in 2018 and 2019 using soybean variety Zamboane inoculated with Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens strain USDA 110, B. japonicum strains USDA 136, USDA 442 and WB74, and a non-inoculated control in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Indigenous rhizobia populations at the sites ranged from 9.0 x 101 to 2.2 x 103 cells g−1 soil. All four strains increased nodulation, but USDA 110 was superior at two sites with low native rhizobia population, whereas USDA 442 and WB74 were the best at the site with relatively high native rhizobia population. On an average, the strains doubled the number of nodules and increased the dry weight up to 5.8-fold. Inoculation increased shoot dry weight and N content at podding, plant biomass, and number of pods plant−1 across sites but the effects of the strains on seeds per pod, and 100-seed weight were inconsistent. Shoot N content did not differ among inoculant strains and ranged from 15.70 g kg−1 in the control to 38.53 g kg−1 across inoculation. All four strains increased soybean grain yield across sites in 2018 but USDA 110 outperformed the other strains and was also the best at one of the two sites in 2019. Grain yield responses associated with USDA 110 ranged from 552 kg ha−1 (56%) to 1,255 kg ha−1 (76%). Positive correlations between nodule dry weight plant−1 and seed yield, and number of pods plant−1 and grain yield were observed. The gross margin ranged from 343.50–343.50–606.80 ha−1 for the control, but it increased to 688.34–688.34–789.36 when inoculants were applied. On an average, inoculation increased gross margin by 182.57−182.57-395.35 ha−1 over that of non-inoculated control in 2018 but drought stress in 2019 reduced the benefit. The results demonstrate that USDA 110 was the best inoculant strain and has the potential of increasing smallholder productivity and net returns

    AICCRA Zambia Additional Finance Stakeholder Consultation Report

    This report presents the outcomes of Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) Zambia Stakeholder Consultation Workshop for Additional Financing (AF). The consultation was held on September 21, 2023, from 09:00 to 14:00 CAT at the Inter-Continental Hotel, Lusaka. In total, 100 participants (31 females and 14 youth) participated in the consultation. The objectives of the stakeholder consultation were to: i) update and inform stakeholders about the AICCRA program; ii) inform partners and stakeholders about the continuation of financing and the rational for AICCRA’s AF, including the new orientations and increased ambitions; and iii) collect inputs and feedback from stakeholders to consolidate into the AICCRA AF proposal
