A comparison of muscle stiffness and musculoarticular stiffness of the knee joint in young athletic males and females

The objective of this study was to investigate the gender-specific differences in peak torque (PT), muscle stiffness (MS) and musculoarticular stiffness (MAS) of the knee joints in a young active population. Twenty-two male and twenty-two female recreational athletes participated. PT of the knee joint extensor musculature was assessed on an isokinetic dynamometer, MS of the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle was measured in both relaxed and contracted conditions, and knee joint MAS was quantified using the free oscillation technique. Significant gender differences were observed for all dependent variables. Females demonstrated less normalized PT (mean difference (MD) = 0.4 N m/kg, p = 0.005, g2 = 0.17), relaxed MS (MD = 94.2 N/m, p < .001, g2 = 0.53), contracted MS (MD = 162.7 N/m, p < .001, g2 = 0.53) and MAS (MD = 422.1 N/m, p < .001, g2 = 0.23) than males. MAS increased linearly with the external load in both genders with males demonstrating a significantly higher slope (p = 0.019) than females. The observed differences outlined above may contribute to the higher knee joint injury incidence and prevalence in females when compared to males

Complexity measures and uncertainty relations of the high-dimensional harmonic and hydrogenic systems

In this work we find that not only the Heisenberg-like uncertainty products and the R\'enyi-entropy-based uncertainty sum have the same first-order values for all the quantum states of the DD-dimensional hydrogenic and oscillator-like systems, respectively, in the pseudoclassical (DD \to \infty) limit but a similar phenomenon also happens for both the Fisher-information-based uncertainty product and the Shannon-entropy-based uncertainty sum, as well as for the Cr\'amer-Rao and Fisher-Shannon complexities. Moreover, we show that the LMC (L\'opez-Ruiz-Mancini-Calvet) and LMC-R\'enyi complexity measures capture the hydrogenic-harmonic difference in the high dimensional limit already at first order

Sex differences in the susceptibility to valproic acid-associated liver injury in epileptic patients

Valproic acid has been widely used as an antiepileptic drug for several decades. Long-term valproic acid treatment is usually accompanied by liver injury. Although both men and women are susceptible to valproic acid-associated liver injury, hepatotoxicity differs between the sexes. However, the mechanisms underlying sex differences in valproic acid-associated liver injury remain unclear. To explore potential risk factors for the susceptibility to valproic acid-associated liver injury, 231 pediatric patients with epilepsy (119 males, 112 females) were enrolled for laboratory and genetic analysis. Heterozygous genotype of catalase C-262T (P = 0.045) and the concentrations of glutathione (P = 0.002) and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (P = 0.011) were associated with the sex-specific susceptibility to valproic acid-associated liver injury. Meanwhile, logistic regression analysis revealed that carriers of heterozygous genotype of catalase C-262T (P = 0.010, odds ratio: 4.163; 95 percent confidence interval 1.400 − 7.378), glutathione concentration (P = 0.001, odds ratio: 2.421; 95 percent confidence interval 2.262 − 2.591) and male patients (P = 0.005, odds ratio: 1.344; 95% confidence interval 0.782 − 2.309) had a higher risk for valproic acid-associated liver injury. The mechanism underlying valproic acid-induced hepatotoxicity remains unclear. Additionally, factors that may contribute to the observed differences in the incidence of hepatotoxicity between males and females have yet to be defined. This study identifies several genetic factors that may predispose patients to valproic acid-associated hepatotoxicity. This relatively small sample size of children with one ethnicity some of whom were taking other antiepileptics that are potentially hepatotoxic. Catalase C-262T genotype, glutathione concentration and gender (male) are potential risk factors for the susceptibility to valproic acid-associated liver injury.</p

Missing intentionality : the limitations of social media analysis for participatory urban design

    No full text
This paper reflects upon some limitations of Urban Sensing, a EU-funded research project that explores the potential of social media analysis and data visualization as a source of knowledge for participatory urban planning processes. In Urban Sensing we did not only collect users’ contributions related to the context of their use and perception of the city, but all kinds of contributions, such as private comments or conversations with friends that are completely unrelated to urban issues. In most of the contributions collected in our platform, there is no intentionality from the users to post a tweet or check-in at Foursquare as actions to influence urban planning and management processes. Can this lack of intentionality undermine the potential of our platform as a bottom-up component for participatory processes

DataSheet1_Extracting geological and alteration information and predicting antimony ore based on multisource remote sensing data in Huangyangling, Xinjiang.docx

Introduction: China has the world’s largest amount of antimony resources and plays a vital role in the global antimony industry. The Huangyangling area in Xinjiang belongs to the Lazhulong-Huangyangling antimony mineralization belt; this area is rich in antimony ore resources, with potential for discovery of additional ore. This high-elevation mountainous area is located in the northwestern region of the northern Tibetan Plateau, with a harsh natural environment and poor transportation access; thus, the use of traditional geological exploration methods is limited, and remote sensing technology provides unique advantages. Methods: Using Landsat 8 OLI and Gaofen-6 (GF-6) data, we extracted stratigraphic, lithologic and fault information from the study area through information enhancement processing of the images. Based on Landsat 8 OLI, Sentinel-2 and ASTER images and the use of remote sensing image preprocessing and interference information masking, the spectral characteristics of limonite, as well as hydroxyl, carbonate, and silicified alteration minerals were utilized; the characteristics included reflection or absorption in specific spectral bands. The spectral characteristics were then combined with principal component analysis (PCA) and the band ratio method to extract the alteration information for the study area. Results: The stratigraphy and boundaries between stratigraphic and lithologic units extracted in this study were defined, and numerous small faults were identified based on a comparison with 1:250,000 geologic maps. And the overall distribution trends of the indicators of alteration extracted in this study were located along fault zones; additionally, the hydroxyl and carbonate alteration anomalies matched well with known deposits (occurrences). Thus, the alteration information is a good indication of antimony ore bodies. Based on the geological interpretation, alteration information extraction and geochemical exploration data, four prospecting areas were identified.Discussion: The method of extracting geological and hydrothermal alteration information by remote sensing has practical significance because it provides the possibility for geological work and mineral exploration in difficult high-elevation environments.</p
