Teleological Essentialism: Generalized
Natural/social kind essentialism is the view that natural kind categories, both living and non-living natural kinds, as well as social kinds (e.g., race, gender), are essentialized. On this view, artifactual kinds are not essentialized. Our view—teleological essentialism—is that a broad range of categories are essentialized in terms of teleology, including artifacts. Utilizing the same kinds of experiments typically used to provide evidence of essentialist thinking—involving superficial change (study 1), transformation of insides (study 2) and inferences about offspring (study 3)—we find support for the view that a broad range of categories—living natural kinds, non-living natural kinds and artifactual kinds—are essentialized in terms of teleology. Study 4 tests a unique prediction of teleological essentialism and also provides evidence that people make inferences about purposes which in turn guide categorization judgments
The Winner's Choice: Sustainable Economic Strategies for Successful 21st Century Regions
Throughout the second half of the 20th Century, urbanization, new technologies, rapid labor-saving productivity growth in primary industries, and improved highways combined to create large-scale rural-urban functionally integrated regions. These forces have raised the stakes for regions in their pursuit of economic development and growth, making successful regional policy even more important. Changes to the governance structures consistent with the increased interdependence within broad rural-urban regions will improve the region's competitiveness; adopting fad-based approaches and policies aimed at “picking winners” will be less fruitful. Going forward, continuing globalization and environmental sustainability have the potential to fundamentally reshape relative regional attractiveness.Regional Policy, Rural Development
Supersonic boundary-layer transition on the LaRC F-106 and the DFRF F-15 aircraft. Part 2: Aerodynamic predictions
In the leading edge region, the measured pressure distributions exhibit extreme variations from strong suction peaks to a pressure maximum at the attachment line. These variations occur over short distances on the wing surface, and their character changes with changes in Mach number and angle of attack. The data/theory comparisons show that the character of the measured pressure distributions is well predicted for every Mach number and/or angle of attack condition considered. There is good agreement between theory and experiment for the location of the attachment line and suction peaks. The pressure magnitudes are well represented in the critical leading edge region, including the pressure maximum on the attachment line. The wing/body/inlet results agree well with the wing alone back to about 20 percent of chord where the upper surface suction peak typically occurs. The largest differences between theory and measurement always occur in the vicinity of suction peaks, with the difference being approximately 15 percent or less. In regions of largest error, the predicted pressures underestimate the suction peak strength for each case considered. Spectral Variations in Early-Type Galaxies as a Function of Mass
We report on the strengths of three spectral indicators - Mg_2, Hbeta, and
Hn/Fe - in the integrated light of a sample of 100 field and cluster E/S0
galaxies. The measured indices are sensitive to age and/or and metallicity
variations within the galaxy sample. Using linear regression analysis for data
with non-uniform errors, we determine the intrinsic scatter present among the
spectral indices of our galaxy sample as a function of internal velocity
dispersion. Our analysis indicates that there is significantly more intrinsic
scatter in the two Balmer line indices than in the Mg_2 index, indicating that
the Balmer indices provide more dynamic range in determining the age of a
stellar population than does the Mg_2 index. Furthermore, the scatter is much
larger for the low velocity dispersion galaxies, indicating that star formation

The source and sensor are separately and independently suspended and positioned against a mine surface of hydraulic pistons, which are biased from an air cushioned source of pressurized hydraulic fluid
Summary of all cycle II.5 shear and boundary layer measurements, aerodynamics
The two measurement systems were used to measure mean velocity and velocity, mass flux, and total temperature fluctuations in the turbulent boundary on the fuselage of a KC-135 aircraft. The boundary layer thickness ranged between about 20 and 30 cm for the range of flight Mach numbers from about 0.25 to 0.85 and Reynolds numbers between 3 and 6 x 10 to the 6th power/m. The adaptation of each system for use in airborne applications is discussed. The data obtained from each system are given and compared with each other and they indicate that the two systems represent viable ones for use in future airborne turbulence experiments
