Shuttle orbiter radar cross-sectional analysis
Theoretical and model simulation studies on signal to noise levels and shuttle radar cross section are described. Pre-mission system calibrations, system configuration, and postmission system calibration of the tracking radars are described. Conversion of target range, azimuth, and elevation into radar centered east north vertical position coordinates are evaluated. The location of the impinging rf energy with respect to the target vehicles body axis triad is calculated. Cross section correlation between the two radars is presented
Regional Debt in Monetary Unions: Is it Inflationary?
This paper studies the inflationary implications of interest bearing regional debt in a monetary union. Is this debt simply backed by future taxation with no inflationary consequences? Or will the circulation of region debt induce monetization by a central bank? We argue here that both outcomes can arise in equilibrium. In the model economy, there are multiple equilibria which reflect the perceptions of agents regarding the manner in which the debt obligations will be met. In one equilibrium, termed Ricardian, the future obligations are met with taxation by a regional government while in the other, termed Monetization, the central bank is induced to print money to finance the region's obligations. The multiplicity of equilibria reflects a commitment problem of the central bank. A key indicator of the selected equilibrium is the distribution of the holdings of the regional debt. We show that regional governments, anticipating central bank financing of their debt obligations, have an incentive to create excessively large deficits. We construct all e-codimension 1 multi-germs of analytic (or smooth) maps (kn, T) [rightward arrow] (kp, 0), with n [gt-or-equal, slanted] p − 1, (n, p) nice dimensions, k = or , by augmentation and concatenation operations, starting from mono-germs (|T| = 1) and one 0-dimensional bi-germ. As an application, we prove general statements for multi-germs of corank [less-than-or-eq, slant] 1: every one has a real form with real perturbation carrying the vanishing homology of the complexification, every one is quasihomogeneous, and when n = p − 1 every one has image Milnor number equal to 1 (this last is already known when n [gt-or-equal, slanted] p)
Acoustic suppression of the coffee-ring effect
We study the influence of acoustic fields on the evaporative self-assembly of solute particles suspended inside sessile droplets of complex fluids. The self-assembly process often results in an undesirable ring-like heterogeneous residue, a phenomenon known as the coffee-ring effect. Here we show that this ring-like self-assembly can be controlled acoustically to form homogeneous disc-like or concentrated spot-like residues. The principle of our method lies in the formation of dynamic patterns of particles in acoustically excited droplets, which inhibits the evaporation-driven convective transport of particles towards the contact line. We elucidate the mechanisms of this pattern formation and also obtain conditions for the suppression of the coffee-ring effect. Our results provide a more general solution to suppress the coffee-ring effect without any physiochemical modification of the fluids, the particles or the surface, thus potentially useful in a broad range of industrial and analytical applications that require homogenous solute depositions
Measurement of lake ice thickness with a short-pulse radar system
Measurements of lake ice thickness were made during March 1975 at the Straits of Mackinac by using a short-pulse radar system aboard an all-terrain vehicle. These measurements were compared with ice thicknesses determined with an auger. Over 25 sites were explored which had ice thicknesses in the range 29 to 60 cm. The maximum difference between radar and auger measurements was less than 9.8 percent. The magnitude of the error was less than + or - 3.5 cm. The NASA operating short-pulse radar system used in monitoring lake ice thickness from an aircraft is also described
Open quantum systems approach to atomtronics
We derive a quantum master equation to treat quantum systems interacting with
multiple reservoirs. The formalism is used to investigate atomic transport
across a variety of lattice configurations. We demonstrate how the behavior of
an electronic diode, a field-effect transistor, and a bipolar junction
transistor can be realized with neutral, ultracold atoms trapped in optical
lattices. An analysis of the current fluctuations is provided for the case of
the atomtronic diode. Finally, we show that it is possible to demonstrate AND

Effect of -site size difference on polar behavior in BiScNbO,(Na, K and Rb): Density functional calculations
We investigate the effect of -site size differences in the double
perovskites BiScO-NbO (Na, K and Rb) using first-principles
calculations. We find that the polarization of these materials is 7090
C/cm along the rhombohedral direction. The main contribution to the
high polarization comes from large off-centerings of Bi ions, which are
strongly enhanced by the suppression of octahedral tilts as the ion size
increases. A high Born effective charge of Nb also contributes to the
polarization and this contribution is also enhanced by increasing the ion
size
