    Factors affecting the failure of copper connectors brazed to copper bus bar segments on a 615-MVA hydroelectric generator at Grand Coulee Dam

    On March 21, 1986, the United States Bureau of Reclamation experienced a ground fault in the main parallel ring assembly of Unit G19 - a 615-MVA hydroelectric generator - at Grand Coulee Dam, Washington. Inspection of the unit revealed that the ground fault had been induced by fracture of one or more of the copper connectors used to join adjacent segments of one of the bus bars in the north half of the assembly. Various experimental techniques were used to detect and determine the presence of cracks, crack morphology, corrosion products, and material microstructure and/or embrittlement.     Molecular basis for the behavioral effects of the odorant degrading enzyme Esterase 6 in Drosophila

    International audiencePrevious electrophysiological and behavioural studies implicate esterase 6 in the processing of the pheromone cis-vaccenyl acetate and various food odorants that affect aggregation and reproductive behaviours. Here we show esterase 6 has relatively high activity against many of the short-mid chain food esters, but negligible activity against cis-vaccenyl acetate. The crystal structure of esterase 6 confirms its substrate-binding site can accommodate many short-mid chain food esters but not cis-vaccenyl acetate. Immunohistochemical assays show esterase 6 is expressed in non-neuronal cells in the third antennal segment that could be accessory or epidermal cells surrounding numerous olfactory sensilla, including basiconics involved in food odorant detection. Esterase 6 is also produced in trichoid sensilla, but not in the same cell types as the cis-vaccenyl acetate binding protein LUSH. Our data support a model in which esterase 6 acts as a direct odorant degrading enzyme for many bioactive food esters, but not cis-vaccenyl acetate

    Effects of Fatty Acid Surfactants on the Magnetic and Magnetohydrodynamic Properties of Ferrofluids

    We prepared Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles having diameters of approximately 12 nm by chemical coprecipitation, which were coated with three different fatty acid surfactants: oleic acid, lauric acid, and myristic acid. From x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements we confirmed that Fe 3 O 4 is the only phase present in the samples. The zero field cooled magnetization curves for the nanoparticles exhibit broad peaks, consistent with superparamagnetic blocking for the polydisperse samples, and a saturation magnetization smaller than that for bulk Fe 3 O 4 . Although there are minimal differences in the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles having different surfactants, we find significant changes in the hydrodynamic response depending on chain length. Hyperthermia measurements show considerably larger response for oleic acid-coated samples, while magneto-optical studies indicate that these samples have slower dynamics of aggregation under the influence of a dc field. These results suggest that the magnetohydrodynamic response of ferrofluids can be controlled by judiciously selecting appropriate surfactants
