Intergenerational equity in municipal accounting: New Zealand 1910s

    No full text
Accounting for fixed assets by municipalities has been discussed in the accounting history literature previously. This paper addresses two issues related to accounting for fixed assets not previously discussed; the influence of the principle of intergenerational equity on local government accounting, and the influence of users of accounting information in accounting policy making in government accounting. The paper identifies that users of accounting information have had significant influence in a debate on government accounting policy, and that the principle of intergenerational equity was given a position of high importance in the debate, but not an unchallengeable position. The motivation of the users of accounting information to engage in the debates is identified as a form of civic duty, which is consistent with the ethical imperative in ensuring intergenerational equity

SHORT COMMUNICATION: The in vitro metabolic activation of the 11-trifluoromethyl analogue of the potent carcinogen 15, 16-dihydro-11-methyl-cyclopenta[a]-phenanthren-17-one to mutagens

A strongly electronegative, bay-region analogue of the potent carcinogen 15, 16-dihydro-11-methylcyclopenta[a]phenanthren-17-one, namely 15, 16-dihydro-11-trifluoromethylcyclopenta[a]phenanthren-17-one, is mutagenic to Salmonella typhimurium TA100. Also it is metabolized at the 1, 2- and 3, 4-positions in the A-ring as well as C-15 in the D-ring to give 3, 4-dihydroxy-3, 4, 15, 16-tetrahydro-11-trifluoromethyl-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren-17-one as the only mutagenic metabolite. In these respects its behaviour is closely similar to that of the 11-methyl compound, suggesting that the electronic nature of the bay-region substituent is rather less critical than its spatial configuration in influencing metabolism to genotoxic intermediates. It remains to be seen, however, whether the trifluoromethyl compound is also a carcinoge

Investigation of a Lomentospora prolificans case cluster with whole genome sequencing

Lomentospora prolificans has caused outbreaks in immunocompromised patients. We performed whole genome sequencing (WGS) on 4 L. prolificans isolates from infections occurring during an 8-month period in the haematology unit at Hospital 1., and 2 isolates from unrelated infections at Hospital 2., showing a high number of mutational differences (>10,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms) between L. prolificans isolates from Hospital 1. Novel typing of isolates by WGS did not demonstrate a single causative strain

On a connection between factor analysis and multidimensional unfolding

Given the preference ordering of each of a number of individuals over a set of stimuli, it is proposed that if the preference orderings are generated in a Euclidean space of r dimensions which can be recovered by unfolding the preference orderings, then a factor analysis of the correlations between individual's preference orderings will yield a space of r + 1 dimensions with the original r -space embedded in it, and the additional dimension will be one of social utility. The proposition is clearly shown to be satisfied by means of the Monte Carlo technique for both random and lattice stimuli in three dimensions and for two other examples with random stimuli in one and two dimensions.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45708/1/11336_2005_Article_BF02289726.pd

Hydrodynamic object recognition using pressure sensing

    No full text
Hydrodynamic sensing is instrumental to fish and some amphibians. It also represents, for underwater vehicles, an alternative way of sensing the fluid environment when visual and acoustic sensing are limited. To assess the effectiveness of hydrodynamic sensing and gain insight into its capabilities and limitations, we investigated the forward and inverse problem of detection and identification, using the hydrodynamic pressure in the neighbourhood, of a stationary obstacle described using a general shape representation. Based on conformal mapping and a general normalization procedure, our obstacle representation accounts for all specific features of progressive perceptual hydrodynamic imaging reported experimentally. Size, location and shape are encoded separately. The shape representation rests upon an asymptotic series which embodies the progressive character of hydrodynamic imaging through pressure sensing. A dynamic filtering method is used to invert noisy nonlinear pressure signals for the shape parameters. The results highlight the dependence of the sensitivity of hydrodynamic sensing not only on the relative distance to the disturbance but also its bearing

The influence of defined ante-mortem stressors on the early post-mortem biochemical processes in the abdominal muscle of the Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus (Linnaeus, 1758)

The effects of four different ante-mortem stressors (exercise, emersion, starvation and a patent infection with the parasite Hematodinium sp.) on post-mortem processes have been investigated in the abdominal muscle of Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus by measuring changes in the pH, the levels of glycogen, l-lactate, arginine phosphate, ATP, ADP, AMP, IMP, HxR, Hx and the adenylate energy charge (AEC) over a time course of 24 h with samples being taken at 0, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h. The acute stresses of intense exercise and 2 h emersion resulted in a premature onset of anaerobic glycolysis, leading both to an enhanced glycogen depletion rate and an early accumulation of l-lactate. The chronic stressors, starvation and parasite infection, resulted in a complete ante-mortem depletion of muscle glycogen and consequently the failure of post-mortem glycolytic fermentation. Post-mortem pH and ATP inter-conversion were significantly altered in chronically stressed animals. Ante-mortem, a rapid, almost complete depletion of arginine phosphate was observed in all stress groups. The AEC was altered significantly by all stresses, indicating a strong energy demand. The findings suggest that ante-mortem stressors strongly influence the post-mortem biochemical processes. The laboratory-based results are compared to 'field' data and effects on post-harvest product quality are discussed

Remagnetization of bulk high-temperature superconductors subjected to crossed and rotating magnetic fields

Bulk melt-processed Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) has significant potential for a variety of high-field permanent-magnet-like applications, such as the rotor of a brushless motor. When used in rotating devices of this kind, however, the YBCO can be subjected to both transient and alternating magnetic fields that are not parallel to the direction of magnetization and which have a detrimental effect on the trapped field. These effects may lead to long-term decay of the magnetization of the bulk sample. In the present work, we analyze both experimentally and numerically the remagnetization process of a melt-processed YBCO single domain that has been partially demagnetized by a magnetic field applied orthogonal to the initial direction of trapped flux. Magnetic torque measurements are used as a tool to probe changes in the remanent magnetization during various sequences of applied field. The application of a small magnetic field between the transverse cycles parallel to the direction of original magnetization results in partial remagnetization of the sample. Rotating the applied field, however, is found to be much more efficient at remagnetizing the bulk material than applying a magnetizing field pulse of the same amplitude. The principal features of the experimental data can be reproduced qualitatively using a two-dimensional finite-element numerical model based on an E-J power law. Finally, the remagnetization process is shown to result from the complex modification of current distribution within the cross-section of the bulk sample
