Coupled cavity traveling wave tube with velocity tapering
A coupled cavity traveling wave tube with a velocity taper, which affords beam wave resynchronization and thereby enhances is described. The wave velocity reduction is achieved by reducing the resonant frequencies of the individual resonant cavities as a function of the distance from the electron gun, through changes in internal cavity dimensions. The required changes in cavity dimensions can be accomplished by gradually increasing the cavity radius decreasing the gap length from cavity to cavity. The velocity reduction is carried out without an increase in circuit resistive losses and the upper and lower cut off frequencies are reduced in approximately the same manner
Traveling wave tube circuit
A traveling wave tube (TWT) has a slow wave structure (SWS) which is severed into two or more sections. A signal path, connects the end of an SWS section to the beginning of the following SWS section. The signal path comprises an impedance matching coupler (IMC), followed by an isolator, a variable phase shifter, and a second IMC. The aggregate band pass characteristic of the components in the signal path is chosen to reject, or strongly attenuate, all frequencies outside the desired operating frequency range of the TWT and yet pass, with minimal attenuation in the forward direction, all frequencies within the desired operating frequency range. The isolator is chosen to reject, or strongly attenuate, waves, of all frequencies, which propagate in the backward direction. The aggregate phase shift characteristic of the components in the signal path is chosen to apply signal power to the beginning of the following SWS section with the phase angle yielding maximum efficiency
The boundaries of difference in law: a critique of radical incommensurability
Occasionally, in pursuing their adjudicative duties over the course of a legal hearing, judges are called upon to acquire new concepts – that is, concepts which they did not possess at the commencement of the hearing. In performing their judicial role they are required to learn new things and, as a result, conceptualise the world in a way which differs from the way they conceived of things before the hearing commenced. Some theorists have argued that either as a general matter or as a matter specific to judicial practice and the legal context, judges are, with some degree of necessity, incapacitated from acquiring certain kinds of concepts. Such concepts include those possessed by the members of culturally different minority groups. Drawing on contemporary trends in analytic and naturalistic philosophy of mind, this paper explores the extent to which a judge might be incapacitated from acquiring new concepts over the course of a legal hearing and identifies those factors which condition the success or failure of that process

Towards More Precise Photometric Redshifts: Calibration Via CCD Photometry
We present the initial results from a deep, multi-band photometric survey of
selected high Galactic latitude redshift fields. Previous work using the
photographic data of Koo and Kron demonstrated that the distribution of
galaxies in the multi-dimensional flux space U B R I is nearly planar. The
position of a galaxy within this plane is determined by its redshift,
luminosity and spectral type. Using recently acquired deep CCD photometry in
existing, published redshift fields, we have redetermined the distribution of
galaxies in this four-dimensional magnitude space. Furthermore, from our CCD
photometry and the published redshifts, we have quantified the
photometric-redshift relation within the standard AB magnitude system. This
empirical relation has a measured dispersion of approximately 0.02 for z < 0.4.
With this work we are reaching the asymptotic intrinsic dispersions that were
predicted from simulated distributions of galaxy colors.Comment: submitted to the Astrophysical Journal Letter
