    Librarianship and Sustainable Development in Hospitality and Tourism: Special Focus on Bibliotourism

    The contextual environment of library in the 21st century has given way to diversity of library services. The library has moved from the era of being a place where people come to conduct research or reading to what is now known all over the globe as infonomics; moving from the era of thinking and talking of library information materials as asset but, giving it the economic value that it actually worth. In the same vein, library, no doubt has prominent role to play in sustainability of hospitality and tourism development which has great influence on the nation’s economic growth and sustainability. Hospitality and tourism can be promoted and sustained through bibliotourism. This paper therefore, expounds the concept of bibliotourism and its influence on sustainability of hospitality and tourism development. For libraries in Nigeria to successfully court tourism to harness bibliotourism, concerted effort must be made by the government and all stakeholders in information profession to make our libraries centers of excellence and attraction. The paper therefore recommends that the library must be architecturally imposing exuding beauty and awe as is usually found of libraries in other nations and offer dynamic services and resources that catch the fancy of all people

    Mapping our Universe in 3D with MITEoR

    Mapping our universe in 3D by imaging the redshifted 21 cm line from neutral hydrogen has the potential to overtake the cosmic microwave background as our most powerful cosmological probe, because it can map a much larger volume of our Universe, shedding new light on the epoch of reionization, inflation, dark matter, dark energy, and neutrino masses. We report on MITEoR, a pathfinder low-frequency radio interferometer whose goal is to test technologies that greatly reduce the cost of such 3D mapping for a given sensitivity. MITEoR accomplishes this by using massive baseline redundancy both to enable automated precision calibration and to cut the correlator cost scaling from N^2 to NlogN, where N is the number of antennas. The success of MITEoR with its 64 dual-polarization elements bodes well for the more ambitious HERA project, which would incorporate many identical or similar technologies using an order of magnitude more antennas, each with dramatically larger collecting area.Comment: To be published in proceedings of 2013 IEEE International Symposium on Phased Array Systems & Technolog

    Synthesis, Physicochemical Characterization, and Catalytic Evaluation of Fe\u3csup\u3e3+\u3c/sup\u3e-Containing SSZ-70 Zeolite

    Whereas one-dimensional, 10-membered ring zeolites are typically used for hydroisomerization, Fe3+-containing SSZ-70 (Fe-SSZ-70) shows remarkable isomerization selectivity for a zeolite containing 12- and partially blocked 14-membered rings, in addition to 10-membered rings. Fe-SSZ-70 was compared to Al3+-containing SSZ-70 (Al-SSZ-70) in constraint index and n-decane hydrocracking tests. Fe-SSZ-70 exhibited a 74% total isomer yield (64% yield of monobranched isomers and 10% cracking yield) at 85% conversion compared to 49% total isomer yield (41% yield of monobranched isomers and 36% cracking yield) for Al-SSZ-70 at the same conversion. The selectivity to isomerization is attributed to the weaker acid strength of Fe-SSZ-70 over Al-SSZ-70. Fe-SSZ-70 was directly synthesized with Fe3+ isomorphously substituted in tetrahedral positions. The coordination environment of the Fe3+ was characterized using Mössbauer, electron paramagnetic resonance, and diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopies. The physicochemical properties were further probed with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of isopropylamine, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. The Fe3+ was tetrahedrally coordinated in the as-made materials and became partially octahedrally coordinated upon calcination; enough Fe3+ remained in the framework after calcination for Fe-SSZ-70 to remain catalytically active

    Attenuation of Na/K-ATPase Mediated Oxidant Amplification with pNaKtide Ameliorates Experimental Uremic Cardiomyopathy

    We have previously reported that the sodium potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na/K-ATPase) can effect the amplification of reactive oxygen species. In this study, we examined whether attenuation of oxidant stress by antagonism of Na/K-ATPase oxidant amplification might ameliorate experimental uremic cardiomyopathy induced by partial nephrectomy (PNx). PNx induced the development of cardiac morphological and biochemical changes consistent with human uremic cardiomyopathy. Both inhibition of Na/K-ATPase oxidant amplification with pNaKtide and induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) with cobalt protoporphyrin (CoPP) markedly attenuated the development of phenotypical features of uremic cardiomyopathy. In a reversal study, administration of pNaKtide after the induction of uremic cardiomyopathy reversed many of the phenotypical features. Attenuation of Na/K-ATPase oxidant amplification may be a potential strategy for clinical therapy of this disorder
