Efekti prilagodbe u leksičkoj obradi
Psycholinguistic research generally adopts a scientific strategy that assumes a relatively
stable set of representations and processes. In accordance with this strategy, researchers
average measurements across trials, in an attempt to get a statistically stable estimate
of performance for a given experimental condition. In this paper, we present four sets
of example data drawn from various psycholinguistic tasks and show that the psycholinguistic
system appears to adapt across the trials of the experiments. We show that
there are cases in which a factor has no main effect, but interacts across trial; in other
cases there is a main effect of a factor, but that factor also interacts with trial. Finally,
we show that there are some cases in which the way that a factor interacts across trials
is dependent on other, unrelated conditions included in the experiment. Our discussion
focuses on both theoretical and methodological implications of the adaptiveness of the
psycholinguistic system.Psiholingvistička istraživanja obično primjenjuju znanstvenu strategiju koja pretpostavlja
relativno stabilan skup predodžbi i procesa. U skladu s tom strategijom, istraživači mjere
prosječne vrijednosti tako da izvode više pokusnih ispitivanja kako bi dobili statistički stabilnu
procjenu uspješnosti izvedbe određenoga pokusnog uvjeta. U ovom radu izložit će se četiri skupa
podataka izvađenih iz različitih psiholingvističkih zadataka i pokazati kako se psiholingvistički
sustav naizgled prilagođava tijekom pokusnog ispitivanja. Pokazat će se kako postoje slučajevi
u kojima određeni čimbenik nema glavni efekt, ali je u interakciji tijekom ispitivanja; u drugim
slučajevima postoji glavni efekt čimbenika, ali je i taj čimbenik u interakciji s ispitivanjem.
Konačno, pokazujemo slučajeve u kojima je način na koji čimbenik utječe na ispitivanje ovisan
o drugim, uz njega nevezanim uvjetima pokusa. Naša se diskusija usredotočuje na teorijske i

Children’s preference for HAS and LOCATED relations: A word learning bias for noun–noun compounds
The present study investigates children’s bias when interpreting novel noun–noun compounds (e.g. kig donka) that refer to combinations of novel objects (kig and donka). More specifically, it investigates children’s understanding of modifier–head relations of the compounds and their preference for HAS or LOCATED relations (e.g. a donka that HAS a kig or a donka that is LOCATED near a kig) rather than a FOR relation (e.g. a donka that is used FOR kigs). In a forced-choice paradigm, two- and three-year-olds preferred interpretations with HAS/LOCATED relations, while five-year-olds and adults showed no preference for either interpretation. for this preference and its relation to another word learning bias that is based on perceptual features of the referent objects, i.e. the shape bias. We argue that children initially focus on a perceptual stability rather than a pure conceptual stability when interpreting the meaning of nouns
Writing direction and language activation affect how Arabic-English bilingual speakers map time onto space
We investigated whether writing direction and language activation influence how bilingual speakers map time onto space. More specifically, we investigated how Arabic-English bilingual speakers conceived where (e.g., on the left or on the right) different time periods (e.g., past, present, future) were located, depending on whether they were tested in Arabic (a language that is written from right to left) or in English (a language that is written from left to right). To analyze this, participants were given a task that involved arranging cards depicting different scenes of a story in chronological order. Results show that, when tested in Arabic, participants were significantly more likely to use right-to-left arrangements (following the Arabic writing direction), compared to when tested in English

Multiword expressions (MWEs), such as noun compounds (e.g. nickname in English, and Ohrwurm in German), complex verbs (e.g. give up in English, and aufgeben in German) and idioms (e.g. break the ice in English, and das Eis brechen in German), may be interpreted literally but often undergo meaning shifts with respect to their constituents. Theoretical, psycholinguistic as well as computational linguistic research remain puzzled by when and how MWEs receive literal vs. meaning-shifted interpretations, what the contributions of the MWE constituents are to the degree of semantic transparency (i.e., meaning compositionality) of the MWE, and how literal vs. meaning-shifted MWEs are processed and computed. This edited volume presents an interdisciplinary selection of seven papers on recent findings across linguistic, psycholinguistic, corpus-based and computational research fields and perspectives, discussing the interaction of constituent properties and MWE meanings, and how MWE constituents contribute to the processing and representation of MWEs.
