Field trip guide to Oligocene Limestones and Caves in the Waitomo District

The field guide runs from Hamilton to Waitomo to Te Anga and return in limestone-dominated country developed in transgressive sedimentary deposits of the Oligocene Te Kuiti Group – a world class example of a temperate shelf carbonate depositional system. Attention focuses on the nature, distribution and paleoenvironmental controls of the main limestone facies and some of the mixed terrigenous-carbonate facies in the Group. Along the way features of the Waitomo karst landscape are noted and the trip concludes by going underground in the Ruakuri Cave to discuss cave origins and the evidence for paleoenvironmental changes locked up in speleothems

Pedagogies afforded by new technologies: the introduction of iPods in one secondary school

Mobile technologies such as iPods are making inroads in many aspects of education at St. Columba High School in New South Wales. The potential of many of these devices is being explored in a range of educational environments but there has been minimal research to address the effectiveness of this learning tool from the perspective of the student. St. Columba's, a co-educational Catholic High School located in the Blue Mountains of Australia, have adopted iPods to replace textbooks for students in Year 8. As a pedagogical approach to learning, the use of iPods can be an advantageous move for secondary schools in light of the Australian government's education 'Digital revolution.' The aim of this study was to investigate the iPod experience for a small group of Year 8 students and their expectations using iPod Touches for learning. The study aimed to gather data on student expectations of their uses. Data for this study was collected from September to December, 2010, with students completing an online questionnaire using their iPod Touch on the Survey Monkey website. Results are positive and show that students are very keen to use the technology for learning purposes and they have some interesting and realistic expectations on how the iPods can be applied in the classroom

Are the attitudes of exercise instructors who work with older adults influenced by training and personal characteristics?

Little is known about the relationship between attitudes and characteristics of instructors and uptake and adherence of older people to exercise classes. This article explores these issues.Methods:The authors surveyed 731 UK exercise instructors with specialist older adult exercise qualifications. A questionnaire investigated instructors’ characteristics and attitudes toward older adults’ participation in exercise.Results:For mostly seated classes, EXTEND qualification (B = 0.36, p = .005) had a positive effect on instructors’ attitudes. Later Life Training qualification (B = −2.80, p = .003), clinical background (B = −3.99, p = .005), and delivering classes in National Health Services (B = −3.12, p &lt; .001), leisure centers (B = −2.75, p = .002), or nursing homes (B = −2.29, p = .005) had a negative effect on attitudes. For mostly standing classes, experience (B = 0.20, p = .003) and delivering in leisure centers (B = 0.46, p = .032) had a positive and clinical background (B = −1.78, p = .018) had a negative effect on instructors’ attitudes.Conclusions:Most instructors have positive attitudes, but training and work context can influence attitudes toward older people’s participation in exercise classes both positively and negatively.</jats:sec

Learning in a different life: Pre-service education students using an online virtual world

Second Life is an online virtual world that is three dimensional and uses rich graphics to allow the user to be engaged in this environment. There has been a significant increase in people using this virtual world and of those conducting research in it in the recent past. This research study analyses a project where pre-service education students accessed Second Life as part of a fourth year elective course. The students had not used this virtual world prior to being introduced to it in class. They completed a problem based learning experience in Second Life that allowed the students to explore the virtual world as well as develop an activity that could be taught to a high school class. This study used case study methodology within a qualitative research framework. Although it was only a small pilot study, results suggest that the students learned how to navigate around Second Life and were open to this new technology. Half the students reported that they would use this technology or similar technologies in the future

Middle years students' use of self-regulating strategies in an online journaling environment

This study investigated boys' capacity for self regulation in a Year 8 classroom at a regional secondary college in the state of Victoria, Australia. This was an exploratory descriptive study that sought to examine how the use of an online journal influenced students' capacity to adaptively react (Zimmerman, 2002) to self-determined knowledge about the effectiveness of their method of learning and set learning goals (Ames & Ames, 1989; Midgley, Kaplan, & Middleton, 2001). An online recording and online journaling space were developed by the researcher. The journal has been designed to be engaging for young adolescent male students as well as allowing students to set goals and reflect on how they can achieve those goals in an imaginative, non-threatening, and jargon-free environment. The study reported here aims to determine if through the use of this online journal students' capacity to extend their understanding of themselves as learners through the setting, monitoring and evaluating of personal learning goals can increase. These findings contribute to discussion about the important contemporary issue of students self regulation

The Role of the Internet in the Primary School Classroom: From a learning and teaching perspective

Computer related technology is increasingly used in society today, and has influenced in various ways on classrooms across the world. In New South Wales, Australia, there has been an increasing emphasis on teaching using information and communication technology (ICT), and in particular the Internet. This study has investigated how the Internet was used to support teaching and learning in primary school classrooms. Case study methodology was used for the study to provide an in-depth view of how some teachers have integrated the use of the Internet into their classroom teaching and learning activities. Data for this study were collected from four public primary schools in New South Wales, during one ten week school term. The study found that while all of the teachers used the Internet to some degree to support teaching and learning activities in the classroom this was done in various ways and with varying success. In particular, ICT infrastructure, access, and use varied between classes and schools. A Study of Matrilineal Descent from the Perspective of the Tlingit NexA'di Eagles

The Athapaskans of the boreal forest of northwestern Canada and Alaska and the Indians of the northern Northwest Coast shared a similar social organization. It was based on the division of a group into moieties and/or phratries, tracing matrilineal descent, practicing exogamy, matrilocality, and sharing resources with other affiliate groups. The Sanyaqoan NexA'di Eagle clan was singular among the Tlingit in the early 20th century because they had a third exogamous group, as opposed to the rest of the Tlingit, who had two: the Raven and the Wolf/Eagle. Therefore, they were often scorned socially by their northern cousins. The NexA'di have also been an enigma to anthropologists. Whereas most researchers have identified the NexA'di as being outside the two major divisions, Olson (1967) suggested they represent "Tlingitized" Tsimshian Eagles. Recent research suggests that, instead, it was the Tlingit Eagles who, through division and migration, introduced the Eagle phratry among the Nisga'a. At an earlier time, the NexA'di or a related Eagle group was present among Tlingit "tribes" as far north as Frederick Sound.
