An iwatsubo-based solution for labyrinth seals - comparison with experimental results
The basic equations are derived for compressible flow in a labyrinth seal. The flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in the circumferential direction where the friction factor is determined by the Blasius relation. Linearized zeroth and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about a centered position by an expansion in the eccentricity ratio. The zeroth-order pressure distribution is found by satisfying the leakage equation while the circumferential velocity distribution is determined by satisfying the momentum equation. The first-order equations are solved by a separation of variables solution. Integration of the resultant pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the reaction force developed by the seal and the corresponding dynamic coefficients. The results of this analysis are compared to published test results
Experimental rotordynamic coefficient results for teeth-on-rotor and teeth-on-stator labyrinth gas seals
An experimental test facility is used to measure the rotordynamic coefficients of teeth-on-rotor and teeth-on-stator labyrinth gas seals. Direct damping coefficients are presented for these seals for the first time. The results are presented for the two seal configurations at identical operating conditions, and show that, in a rotordynamic sense, the teeth-on-stator seal is more stable than the teeth-on-rotor seal, for inlet tangential velocity in the direction of rotation
Searches on star graphs and equivalent oracle problems
We examine a search on a graph among a number of different kinds of objects
(vertices), one of which we want to find. In a standard graph search, all of
the vertices are the same, except for one, the marked vertex, and that is the
one we wish to find. We examine the case in which the unmarked vertices can be
of different types, so the background against which the search is done is not
uniform. We find that the search can still be successful, but the probability
of success is lower than in the uniform background case, and that probability
decreases with the number of types of unmarked vertices. We also show how the
graph searches can be rephrased as equivalent oracle problems
Wave Profile for Anti-force Waves with Maximum Possible Currents
In the theoretical investigation of the electrical breakdown of a gas, we apply a one-dimensional, steady state, constant velocity, three component fluid model and consider the electrons to be the main element in propagation of the wave. The electron gas temperature, and therefore the electron gas partial pressure, is considered to be large enough to provide the driving force. The wave is considered to have a shock front, followed by a thin dynamical transition region. Our set of electron fluid-dynamical equations consists of the equations of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy, plus the Poisson\u27s equation. The set of equations is referred to as the electron fluid dynamical equations; and a successful solution therefor must meet a set of acceptable physical conditions at the trailing edge of the wave. For breakdown waves with a significant current behind the shock front, modifications must be made to the set of electron fluid dynamical equations, as well as the shock condition on electron temperature. Considering existence of current behind the shock front, we have derived the shock condition on electron temperature, and for a set of experimentally measured wave speeds, we have been able to find maximum current values for which solutions to our set of electron velocity, electron temperature, and electron number density within the dynamical transition region of the wave
Modelling flan wear of carbide tool insert in metal cutting
In this paper theoretical and experimental studies are carried out to investigate the intrinsic relationship between tool flank wear and
operational conditions in metal cutting processes using carbide cutting inserts.Anewflank wear rate model, which combines cutting mechanics
simulation and an empirical model, is developed to predict tool flank wear land width. A set of tool wear cutting tests using hard metal coated
carbide cutting inserts are performed under different operational conditions. The wear of the cutting inset is evaluated and recorded using
Zygo New View 5000 microscope. The results of the experimental studies indicate that cutting speed has a more dramatic effect on tool life
than feed rate. The wear constants in the proposed wear rate model are determined based on the machining data and simulation results. A
good agreements between the predicted and measured tool flank wear land width show that the developed tool wear model can accurately
predict tool flank wear to some extent
Sub-Shot-Noise Magnetometry with a Correlated Spin-Relaxation Dominated Alkali-Metal Vapor
Spin noise sets fundamental limits to the precision of measurements using
spin-polarized atomic vapors, such as performed with sensitive atomic
magnetometers. Spin squeezing offers the possibility to extend the measurement
precision beyond the standard quantum limit of uncorrelated atoms. Contrary to
the current understanding, we show that even in the presence of spin
relaxation, spin squeezing can lead to a significant reduction of spin noise,
and hence an increase in magnetometric sensitivity, for a long measurement
time. This is the case when correlated spin relaxation due to binary
alkali-atom collisions dominates independently acting decoherence processes.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Conservatism and women's political representation
Conservative political actors appear rather troubling for many gender and politics scholars and feminist activists. What should we make of their claims to represent women? How should we best understand their actions? This article, based on a critical re-reading of the empirical literature and informed by contemporary representation theory, develops a new conceptual framework for assessing the quality of women's substantive representation by conservatives. We find that under specified conditions, conservative representatives do further women's substantive representation. A first set of conditions relates to conservative claims to represent women. These are considered to be ‘for women’ when they marry conservative women’s concerns in society; when conservative representatives act and do not simply engage in rhetoric; and when their actions are not undercut by other acts, policies or outcomes unfavourable to women. A second set of criteria considers the quality of the process of women’s substantive representation. We contend that a feminist process of deliberation about women’s interests can include conservative claims as long as they meet the requirements of responsiveness, inclusiveness and egalitarianism
Good representatives and good representation
This article should be read as an ongoing dialogue between Suzanne Dovi and ourselves about a common concern: the quality of representation in general and, in particular, the good substantive representation for women (SRW). We strongly share Dovi’s concern that democratic institutions and processes can favor those in positions of power and can be used to dominate and oppress. We also are persuaded that for democracy to function well, a specific type of representative is required (Dovi 2007). The key difference between us is that Dovi’s focus (2002, 2007) is on the individual representative’s characteristics and qualities, whereas we turn our focus to the level of representative processes
Concanavalin A-Binding Enzymes of Crotalus scutulatus scutulatus Venom
Crotalus scutulatus scutulatus crude venom was separated into two fractions by Concanavalin A Sepharose 4B affinity chromatography. The proteins binding to Con A exhibited phosphomonoesterase (orthophosphoric monoester phosphohydrolase EC 3.1.3.2), phosphodiesterase, 5\u27-nucleotidase (5\u27-ribonucleotide phosphohydrolase EC 3.1.3.5), phospholipase A(phosphatidate 2-acylhydrolase EC 3.1.1 .4), hyaluronidase (hyaluronate glycanohydrolase EC 3.2.1 d), N-benzoyl-L-arginine ethyl esterase, p-toluenesulfonyl-L-arginine methyl esterase, L-amino acid oxidase (L-amino acid: 02 oxidoreductase [deaminating] EC 1.4.3.2), and caseinolytic activities. Thrombin-like and NAD nucleosidase (5\u27-ribonucleotide phosphohydrolase EC 3.1.3.5) activities were not observed. The crude venom and the fraction containing the glycoproteins which bound to Con A were fractionated by DEAE Sephadex A-50 ion exchange chromatography. Each of these samples yielded fractions having caseinolytic activities

Elastic modulus and strength of the metal/copper composite material was investigated as a
function of the distance from the point of copper infiltration, the furnace cycle duration, and the
furnace type. The microstructure of the RapidSteel material was also examined in an attempt to
understand the science behind the infiltration process. The results have implications for the
design of tools to be made using the RapidTool process in situations where the tool will be used
