Eye-of-the-Tiger sign is not Pathognomonic of Pantothenate Kinase-Associated Neurodegeneration in Adult Cases

    Get PDF
An eye-of-the-tiger sign is previously known to have one-to-one correlation with pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN). Reviewing the literature on this subject, the correlation between eye-of-the-tiger sign and PKAN seems to show an interesting hypothesis that differs from conventional conclusion. We analyze the published papers in an attempt to reflect this trend and illustrate our points with findings in a 39-year-old man. His brain magnetic resonance imaging study shows typical eye-of-the-tiger sign suggestive of PKAN. Genetic analyses revealed no mutations in pantothenate kinase 2

Estimating Trust Strength For Supporting Effective Recommendation Services

    Get PDF
In the age of information explosion, Internet facilitates product searching and collecting much more convenient for users. However, it is time-consuming and exhausting for users to deal with large amounts of product information. In response, various recommendation approaches have been developed to recommend products that match users’ preferences and requirements. In addition to the well-known collaborative filtering recommendation approach, the trust-based recommendation approach is the emerging one. The reason is that most of online communities allow users to express their trust on other users. Based on the analysis of trust relationships, the trust-based recommendation approach finds out and consults the opinions of more reliable users and therefore makes better recommendations. Existing trust-based recommendation techniques consider all trust relationships in a given trust network equally important and give them the same trust strength. However, in a real-world setting, trust relationships may be of various strengths. In response, in this study, we propose a mechanism for trust strength estimation on the basis of the machine learning approach and estimate the trust strength for each existing trust relationship in a given trust network. To overcome the sparsity of the trust network, we also develop a modified trust propagation method to expand the original trust network. Finally, we perform a series of experiments to demonstrate the performance of our trust-based recommendation approach based on the trust strength estimation mechanism. Our empirical evaluation results show that our proposed approach outperforms our benchmark techniques, i.e., the traditional collaborative filtering approach and the original trust-based one

Design of High Efficiency Illumination for LED Lighting

    Get PDF
A high efficiency illumination for LED street lighting is proposed. For energy saving, this paper uses Class-E resonant inverter as main electric circuit to improve efficiency. In addition, single dimming control has the best efficiency, simplest control scheme and lowest circuit cost among other types of dimming techniques. Multiple serial-connected transformers used to drive the LED strings as they can provide galvanic isolation and have the advantage of good current distribution against device difference. Finally, a prototype circuit for driving 112 W LEDs in total was built and tested to verify the theoretical analysis

Transgenic mice exhibiting inducible and spontaneous Cre activities driven by a bovine keratin 5 promoter that can be used for the conditional analysis of basal epithelial cells in multiple organs

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cre/<it>lox</it>P-mediated genetic modification is the most widely used conditional genetic approach used in the mouse. Engineered Cre and the mutated ligand-binding domain of estrogen receptor fusion recombinase (CreERT) allow temporal control of Cre activity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study, we have generated two distinct transgenic mouse lines expressing CreERT, which show 4-hydroxytamoxifen (4-OHT)-inducible and spontaneous (4-OHT-independent) Cre activities, referred to <it>Tg(BK5-CreER</it><it>T</it><it>)I </it>and <it>Tg(BK5-CreER</it><it>T</it><it>)S</it>, respectively. The transgenic construct is driven by the bovine Keratin 5 promoter, which is active in the basal epithelial lineage of stratified and pseudo-stratified epithelium across multiple organs. Despite the difference in 4-OHT dependency, the <it>Tg(BK5-CreER</it><it>T</it><it>)I </it>and <it>Tg(BK5-CreER</it><it>T</it><it>)S </it>mouse lines shared similar Cre-mediated recombination among various organs, except for unique mammary epithelial Cre activity in <it>Tg(BK5-CreER</it><it>T</it><it>)S </it>females.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These two new transgenic mouse lines for the analysis of basal epithelial function and for the genetic modification have been created allowing the identification of these cell lineages and analysis of their differentiation during embryogenesis, during perinatal development and in adult mice.</p

Prostatic Relaxation Induced by Loperamide Is Reduced in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats

    Get PDF
This paper shows a new finding about the decrease of relaxative response to loperamide in prostate of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) as compare to normal rats (WKY). Authors demonstrated the reduction of ATP-sensitive potassium channels is resposible for this change using immunoblotting analysis and the decrease of action induced by diazoxide. This view is not mentioned before and is the first one reporting this result

Products Processing Division, LRI, COA, Tainan, Taiwan. Accepted 1 August, 2012 The purpose of this study was to analyze the antioxidation activities and total phenolic contents of Toona sinensis. An extractive method of the antioxidant activities of local T. sinensis leaf extracts and various antioxidation models were analyzed. The effects of various solvent concentrations to extract the T. sinensis leaf on the antioxidation activity were compared. The results showed that the T. sinensis leaf extracts of various solvent concentrations had good antioxidant activities. The chelating abilities of ferrous ion in the T. sinensis leaf extracts obtained from various solvent concentrations were above 80%. It is concluded that T. sinensis leaf extracts could be used as biopreservatives of food products. The total antioxidant activities, chelating abilities of ferrous ions and reducing capacities of the T. sinensis leaf extracts might provide a substitute for a natural antioxidant. Keywords: Antioxidative activity, bio-preservatives, extracts, Toona sinensi

MATHEMATICAL MODELING AND PREDICTION METHOD OF CONCRETE CARBONATION AND ITS APPLICATIONS

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT The carbonation process of concrete is principally a diffusion phenomenon. The penetration rate of carbon dioxide depends mainly on the concrete quality and the exposure condition. Based on both Fick&apos;s first and second laws of linear diffusion equations, the threedimensional equation of conservation of mass is expressed. This equation can be reduced to two-and one-dimensional equations of conservation of mass which can predict the carbonation depth beneath corners and the general surface of concrete structures, respectively. The objectives of this investigation are to measure the depth of carbonation from the free surface of a concrete member and to predict the carbonation depth using a statistical method. The result of the present study indicates that the maximum carbonation depth of concrete at corners is larger than 2 times that of the general surface under the conditions of homogeneous, isotropic and uncracked concrete subjected to static load. The carbonation depths of ten existing reinforced concrete (RC) bridges in Taiwan were predicted by the statistical method. The predicted results can be offered as a reference basis of repair, reinforcement or demolition for the existing concrete structures
