Calibration of CMS calorimeters with LHC proton beam deflected by crystal

Calibration of the forward CMS hadron calorimeters in situ by the LHC beam is proposed. Simulations show that bent crystal channeling technique is feasible at the LHC, and report the experience of IHEP Protvino in bending 70 GeV protons by 9 degrees (150 mrad) during 10 years in 1994-2004 experiments. Practical realization of calibration scheme based on simulations and previous experience is proposed.Comment: Presented at CARE-HHH-APD Mini-Workshop on Crystal Collimation in Hadron Storage Rings (CC-2005), Geneva, Switzerland, 7-8 Mar 200

Improvement of Adhesion of the Wheels of the Railway Carriage to the Rails by Means of Supply of the Scale and Magnetite Particles to the Contact Zone

    Get PDF
The article proposes a method to improve adhesion of the wheels to the rails of the railway carriage by means of supply of abrasive loose materials as an alternative to quartz sand to the zone of their contact: metal scale (Fe₃O₄ ) being the waste of rolling and forging, as well as the iron oxide—magnetite (FeO·Fe₂O₃) of the natural origin. The comparative assessment of efficiency of use of scale and magnetite was carried out in relation to quartz sand traditionally used for railway transport. The adhesion coefficient and wear intensity are used as comparison criteria

Radiation of photons in process of charge particle volume reflection in bent single crystal

New type of radiation in crystals is predicted and investigated in computer simulation. It is shown that process of volume reflection of electrons and positrons in bent crystals is accomplished with high-power radiation of photons. Volume reflection radiation has intensity comparable with known channeling radiation, but it is less sensitive to entrance angle and sign of charge of a particle. Simulated spectra of radiation power are presented for 10 GeV and 200GeV particles.Comment: Latex, 8 pages, 4 fig
