    Inverse Avalanches On Abelian Sandpiles

A simple and computationally efficient way of finding inverse avalanches for Abelian sandpiles, called the inverse particle addition operator, is presented. In addition, the method is shown to be optimal in the sense that it requires the minimum amount of computation among methods of the same kind. The method is also conceptually nice because avalanche and inverse avalanche are placed in the same footing.Comment: 5 pages with no figure IASSNS-HEP-94/7

Statistics Of The Burst Model At Super-critical Phase

We investigate the statistics of a model of type-I X-ray burst [Phys. Rev. E, {\bf 51}, 3045 (1995)] in its super-critical phase. The time evolution of the burnable clusters, places where fire can pass through, is studied using simple statistical arguments. We offer a simple picture for the time evolution of the percentage of space covered by burnable clusters. A relation between the time-average and the peak percentage of space covered by burnable clusters is also derived.Comment: 11 Pages in Revtex 3.0. Phase Diagram Of The Biham-Middleton-Levine Traffic Model In Three Dimensions

We study numerically the behavior of the Biham-Middleton-Levine traffic model in three dimensions. Our extensive numerical simulations show that the phase diagram for this model in three dimensions is markedly different from that in one and two dimensions. In addition to the full speed moving as well as the completely jamming phases, whose respective average asymptotic car speeds equal one and zero, we observe an extensive region of car densities ρ\rho with a low but non-zero average asymptotic car speed. The transition from this extensive low average asymptotic car speed region to the completely jamming region is at least second order. We argue that this low speed region is a result of the formation of a spatially-limited-extended percolating cluster. Thus, this low speed phase is present in n>3n > 3 dimensional Biham-Middleton-Levine model as well.Comment: Minor clarifications, 1 figure adde

Transnational Trafficking, Law Enforcement and Victim Protection: A Middleman Trafficker's Perspective

    Get PDF
We explore three hitherto poorly understood characteristics of the human trafficking market – the cross-border ease of mobility of traffickers, the relative bargaining strength of traffickers and final buyers, and the elasticity of buyers' demand. In a model of two-way bargaining, the exact configuration of these characteristics is shown to determine whether domestic and foreign crackdowns on illicit employment mutually reinforce or counteract one another in efforts to stem the tide of trafficking. Estimation results from a gravity model of trafficking present evidence consistent with the mutual reinforcement view, indicating considerable ease of mobility, partial bargaining power, and inelastic demand.human trafficking, two-way Nash bargaining, victim protection, law enforcement

Parity Problem With A Cellular Automaton Solution

    Get PDF
The parity of a bit string of length NN is a global quantity that can be efficiently compute using a global counter in O(N){O} (N) time. But is it possible to find the parity using cellular automata with a set of local rule tables without using any global counter? Here, we report a way to solve this problem using a number of r=1r=1 binary, uniform, parallel and deterministic cellular automata applied in succession for a total of O(N2){O} (N^2) time.Comment: Revtex, 4 pages, final version accepted by Phys.Rev.

A Continuum Model for Soil-Pile-Structure Interactions Under Earthquake Excitation

    Get PDF
An exact analytical method for the interaction analysis of a fully coupled soil-pile-structure system under seismic excitation is investigated in this paper. Only horizontal shaking induced by harmonic SH waves was considered. The soil mass, pile and building were all considered as elastic with hysteretic type damping. Geometrically, the soil is modeled as an elastic isotropic homogeneous continuum, and both pile and structures are simplified as beam models. The structure and piles are coupled through a rigid foundation at the ground level. Buildings of various heights in Hong Kong designed to withstand wind load were analyzed using the present model. Only the shaking at the ground level is considered in this study. It was discovered that the maximum shaking of the piled-structures at ground level is generally larger than that of a free field ground shaking except near the first natural frequency of the coupled soil-pile-structure system. This first resonant frequency depends strongly on the natural frequency of the structure

Multi-Agent Modeling in Managing Six Sigma Projects

    Get PDF
In this paper, a multi-agent model is proposed for considering the human resources factor in decision making in relation to the six sigma project. The proposed multi-agent system is expected to increase the acccuracy of project prioritization and to stabilize the human resources service level. A simulation of the proposed multi- agent model is conducted. The results show that a multi-agent model which takes into consideration human resources when making decisions about project selection and project team formation is important in enabling efficient and effective project management. The multi-agent modeling approach provides an alternative approach for improving communication and the autonomy of six sigma projects in business organizations

Comments on the Quark Content of the Scalar Meson f0(1370)f_0(1370)

Based on the measurements of (Ds+,D+)f0(1370)π+(D_s^+,D^+)\to f_0(1370)\pi^+ we determine, in a model independent way, the allowed ssˉs\bar s content in the scalar meson f0(1370)f_0(1370). We find that, on the one hand, if this isoscalar resonance is a pure nnˉn\bar n state [ nnˉ(uuˉ+ddˉ)/2]n\bar n\equiv(u\bar u+d\bar d)/\sqrt{2} ], a very large WW-annihilation term will be needed to accommodate Ds+f0(1370)π+D_s^+\to f_0(1370)\pi^+. On the other hand, the ssˉs\bar s component of f0(1370)f_0(1370) should be small enough to avoid excessive Ds+f0(1370)π+D_s^+\to f_0(1370)\pi^+ induced from the external WW-emission. Measurement of f0(1370)f_0(1370) production in the decay Ds+K+Kπ+D_s^+\to K^+K^-\pi^+ will be useful to test the above picture. For the decay D0f0(1370)Kˉ0D^0\to f_0(1370)\bar K^0 which is kinematically barely or even not allowed, depending on the mass of f0(1370)f_0(1370), we find that the finite width effect of f0(1370)f_0(1370) plays a crucial role on the resonant three-body decay D0f0(1370)Kˉ0π+πKˉ0D^0\to f_0(1370)\bar K^0\to\pi^+\pi^-\bar K^0.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
