The Discovery of the Koryaks and Their Perception of the World

The first information that we have about the Koryaks was reported in 1669 by Sosnovskij, the administrator of the small fortified town of Okhotsk, who had heard of them from the Tunguzian people. The first true ethnographic data were gathered only in 1700, when Atlasov (1935 [1891)], who had left the fortified town of Anadyr in 1697 to explore new territory, discovered Kamchatka and collected interesting information about the population of that peninsula, in particular the Koryaks. This was the beginning of a long period of exposure. Without doubt, it was the 'second Kamchatka expedition' (1733-1746) that supplied the most useful elements of the study for this region and its population. ..

Les Français du Québec et leur(s) insécurité(s) : linguistique, identitaire et/ou culturelle?

La migration, rencontre interculturelle, impose une confrontation à de nouvelles références culturelles et langagières. Les choix langagiers d’un immigrant français au Québec ont pour objet soit un souci d’intégration, la volonté de se faire juger favorablement par les acteurs de la société d’accueil, soit la perspective d’une rentabilisation de leurs biens linguistiques, misant sur la culture « à la française » pour augmenter leur capital. Cette étude exploratoire vise à observer de plus près les différents éléments linguistiques, identitaires et culturels que les immigrants français de l’Estrie se disent prêts à modifier, si ces modifications peuvent les insécuriser et si cette insécurité peut être à l’origine d’un projet migratoire jugé insatisfaisant. L’analyse de leurs discours métalinguistiques autobiographiques révèle le rôle des différentes variétés de langue dans les processus de sécurisation ou d’insécurisation linguistique et identitaire. Construits autour de normes identitaires très fortes, ces immigrants font fi des jugements de la société québécoise. Leur sujétion à la culture française, au capital symbolique irremplaçable, les place dans une position de sécurité linguistique, identitaire et culturelle. Cette position reste toutefois instable chez les locuteurs témoignant d’une prédisposition à l’insécurité linguistique, ainsi que chez ceux affichant une insécurité identitaire, liée aux déconstructions et reconstructions identitaires inhérentes au parcours migratoire

Differential stability of tetraspanin/tetraspanin interactions: role of palmitoylation

AbstractThe tetraspanins associate with various surface molecules and with each other to build a network of molecular interactions, the tetraspanin web. The interaction of tetraspanins with each other seems to be central for the assembly of the tetraspanin web. All tetraspanins studied, CD9, CD37, CD53, CD63, CD81, CD82 and CD151, were found to incorporate [3H]palmitate. By site-directed mutagenesis, CD9 was found to be palmitoylated at any of the four internal juxtamembrane regions. The palmitoylation of CD9 did not influence the partition in detergent-resistant membranes but contributed to the interaction with CD81 and CD53. In particular, the resistance of the CD9/CD81 interaction to EDTA, which disrupts other tetraspanin/tetraspanin interactions, was entirely dependent on palmitoylation

Importance of the catalytic effect of the substrate in the functionality of lubricant additives: the case of MoDTC

Molybdenum dithiocarbamates (MoDTCs) are lubricant additives very efficient in reducing the friction of steel and they are employed in a number of industrial applications. The functionality of these additives is ruled by the chemical interactions occurring at the buried sliding interface, which are of key importance for the improvement of the lubrication performance. Yet, these tribochemical processes are very difficult to monitor in real time. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are the ideal tool to shed light into such a complicated reactivity. In this work we perform ab initio simulations, both in static and tribological conditions, to understand the effect of surface oxidation on the tribochemical reactivity of MoDTC and we find that when the surfaces are covered by oxygen, the first dissociative steps of the additives are significantly hindered. Our preliminary tribological tests on oxidized steel discs support these results. Bare metallic surfaces are necessary for a stable adsorption of the additives, their quick decomposition, and the formation of a durable MoS$_2$ tribolayer. This work demonstrates the importance of the catalytic role of the substrate and confirms the full capability of the computational protocol in the pursuit of materials and compounds more efficient in reducing friction
