    Double-Dipole Excitations in 40Ca

    The double-dipole strength distribution in 40^{40}Ca is calculated microscopically within a model space of 1p1h - and 2p2h excitations. Anharmonic effects in the centroid energies of the 0+0^+- and 2+2^+ components are found to be small, in agreement with experimental observation.     Extension of random-phase approximation preserving energy weighted sum rules: an application to a 3-level Lipkin model

    A limitation common to all extensions of random-phase approximation including only particle-hole configurations is that they violate to some extent the energy weighted sum rules. Considering one such extension, the improved RPA (IRPA), already used to study the electronic properties of metallic clusters, we show how it can be generalized in order to eliminate this drawback. This is achieved by enlarging the configuration space, including also elementary excitations corresponding to the annihilation of a particle (hole) and the creation of another particle (hole) on the correlated ground state.     Many-body correlations in a multistep variational approach

    We discuss a multistep variational approach for the study of many-body correlations. The approach is developed in a boson formalism (bosons representing particle-hole excitations) and based on an iterative sequence of diagonalizations in subspaces of the full boson space. Purpose of these diagonalizations is that of searching for the best approximation of the ground state of the system. The procedure also leads us to define a set of excited states and, at the same time, of operators which generate these states as a result of their action on the ground state. We examine the cases in which these operators carry one-particle one-hole and up to two-particle two-hole excitations. We also explore the possibility of associating bosons to Tamm-Dancoff excitations and of describing the spectrum in terms of only a selected group of these.     The renormalized quasiparticle-RPA is reformulated for even-even nuclei using restrictions imposed by the commutativity of the phonon creation operator with the total particle number operator. This new version, Fully-Renormalized QRPA (FR-QRPA), is free from the spurious low-energy solutions. Analytical proof is given that the Ikeda sum rule is fullfiled within the FR-QRPA.Comment: 9 page

    Evaluation of Variability in the Sweet Orange Germplasm through Next Generation Clonal Fingerprinting

    The great phenotypic variability characterizing the sweet orange [Citrus sinensis(L.) Osbeck] germplasm arises from spontaneous bud mutations, causing a diversification into major groups (common, Navel and blood oranges). A huge divergence also occurred within each varietal group. The genetic basis of such variability, also including nutritional and qualitative traits (ripening time, colour, fruit shape, acidity, sugars), is currently uncharacterized, and therefore not exploitable. With the aim of describing the somatic mutation events in the sweet orange group a deep-sequencing of 20 Italian and foreign accessions was performed by Illumina platform, allowing the identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), structural variants (SVs) and large deletions, specific to each varietal group or clone-specific. A subset of SNPs used for the design of two 384 SNP - GoldenGate Assays allowed to genotype 225 CREA sweet orange accessions. The developed markers represent the first reliable molecular tools able to unambiguously fingerprint each somatic mutant. Moreover, they might be used to associate mutations with phenotypic traits, and are a powerful tool for traceability. By using the GoldenGate assay, we have been able to fingerprint several blood orange clones starting from DNAs isolated from leaves or juice. These tools will potentially provide the consumer with a guarantee on the quality and origin of juices, avoiding eventual frauds

    First measurement of the isoscalar excitation above the neutron emission threshold of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance in 68Ni

    The excitation of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) in the 68Ni nucleus, above the neutron emission threshold, via an isoscalar probe has been observed for the first time. The excitation has been produced in reactions where a 68Ni beam, obtained by the fragmentation of a 70Zn primary beam at INFN-LNS, impinged on a 12C target. The γ-ray decay was detected using the CsI(Tl) detectors of the CHIMERA multidetector sphere. The 68Ni isotope as well as other heavy ion fragments were detected using the FARCOS array. The population of the PDR was evidenced by comparing the detected γ-ray energy spectra with statistical code calculations. The isotopic resolution of the detection system allows also to directly compare neutron decay channels with the 68Ni channel, better evidencing the PDR decay response function. This comparison allows also the extraction of the PDR cross section and the relative γ-ray angular distribution. The measured γ-ray angular distribution confirms the E1 character of the transition. The γ decay cross section for the excitation of the PDR was measured to be 0.32 mb with a 18% of statistical error
