Adjustment of the reproductive activity of vulnerable lizard phymaturus williamsi at high altitudes

In environments with cold climates, reproduction of lizards is restricted to short seasonal periods of activity, from mid-spring to early autumn. We studied the reproductive biology of Phymaturus williamsi (William’s Andean Lizard), a vulnerable and viviparous lizard from the palluma phylogenetic group of genus Phymaturus, endemic to rocky outcrops in cold environments in the Andes of San Juan, Argentina. We determined adult size, male and female reproductive cycles, litter size, mean annual reproductive output, and the relationship between gonadal cycles, fat bodies, and climatic variables. The shortest reproductive male and female were 87.2 mm and 86.4 mm SVL, respectively. The litter size per female was of one or two offspring every two years, and the mean annual reproductive output was 0.95 offspring/female/year. Births occurred from late summer to early autumn. Males exhibited an annual postnuptial cycle, with spermatogenesis beginning in mid-spring, spermiogenesis occurring in summer and autumn, and sperm stored during brumation through early spring when mating occurs. The male post-nuptial cycle is common in species of the patagonicus group, but not in the palluma group, as is P. williamsi. Nevertheless, the biennial female cycle is common in the palluma group, and results from the adjustment of the reproductive activity to the physiological and environmental constraints of the harsh and cold climatic conditions prevailing at high altitudes in the Andes. The knowledge of the reproductive traits of the vulnerable P. williamsi has direct relevance for the development of conservation strategies, as this information is fundamental for population viability analyses.Fil: Castro, Susana Alejandra. Utilidad de la gonioscopía diagnóstica en el glaucoma

A bibliographical review was made aiming at exposing the fundamental gonioscopical characteristics present in glaucoma patients; searching the main scientific articles in recent years, and also within the printed literature including the topic, being chosen the most relevant contents for the elaboration of the final report. It was concluded that gonioscopy, as a diagnostic means, allows the ophthalmologist to recognize signs related with the several glaucomatous diseases, a reason why it constitutes a necessary and valid method for diagnosing and classifying glaucoma. It is indispensable for any professional worker in this area of medicine to dominate the technique and interpret its findings.Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica con el objetivo de exponer las principales características gonioscópicas presentes en los pacientes glaucomatosos; efectuando una búsqueda de los principales artículos científicos de los últimos años, así como de la literatura impresa que incluye el tema, siendo seleccionados los contenidos más relevantes para la confección del informe final. Se obtuvo que la gonioscopía, como método diagnóstico, le permite al oftalmólogo el reconocimiento de signos relacionados a las diferentes enfermedades glaucomatosas, por lo que constituye un método necesario y válido en el diagnóstico y clasificación de un glaucoma. Se hace imprescindible para todo profesional de esta rama de la medicina, dominar la técnica e interpretar sus hallazgos

Desprendimiento cilio-coroideo bilateral. Presentación de un caso

Introducción: El desprendimiento cilio-coroideo es una condición poco frecuente, que ocurre asociada a traumas o luego de una cirugía ocular. Objetivo: Exponer el manejo y evolución de un caso clínico con desprendimiento cilio-coroideo bilateral. Presentación del caso: Se presenta el caso de un paciente con desprendimiento cilio-coroideo bilateral secundario a trabeculectomía, en el ojo derecho asociado a escape por la incisión y en el ojo izquierdo de aparición tardía por hipotensión ocular crónica debido a filtración excesiva. El cuadro resuelve con tratamiento médico, pero persiste exceso de filtración y desplazamiento anterior del diafragma iridocristaliniano, asociado a intumescencia del cristalino. Se decide realizar extracción del cristalino en ambos ojos, y lograr compensar presión intraocular, estabilizar agudeza visual y reparar segmento anterior. Conclusiones: El desprendimiento cilio-coroideo obedece a diferentes mecanismos fisiopatológicos como se evidencia en el caso presentado. La conducta a seguir dependerá de las características del paciente, forma clínica de presentación y complicaciones asociadas.Palabras clave: Glaucoma, Cirugía Filtrante, Complicaciones Posoperatorias, Trabeculectomía, Desprendimiento cilio-coroideoABSTRACTIntroduction: The cilio-choroidal detachment is a not very frequent condition that appears associated to traumas or after an ocular surgery. Objective: To expose the manage and the clinical evolution in a Bilateral cilio-choroidal detachment patient. Case Presentation: A patient showed up presenting bilateral cilio-choroidal detachment secondary to trabeculotomy, in the right eye associated to aqueous outflow through the incision and in the left eye a late appearance for chronic ocular hypotension due to excessive filtration. It was successfully treated with drugs but it remained with excessive filtration and anterior displacement of the iris and the crystalline, associated with intumescence of the crystalline lens. It was decided to carry out the extraction of the crystalline lens in both eyes, being able to compensate intraocular pressure, to stabilize visual acuity and to repair anterior segment. Conclusions: The cilio-choroidal detachment is due to different physiopathologic mechanisms, as it is shown in this case. Nuevo registro y confirmación de Leiosaurus paronae (Peracca, 1897) (Squamata: Leiosauridae) en la provincia de San Juan, Argentina

We report the first record of Leiosaurus paronae in the department Valle Fértil, San Juan province, Argentina. In December 2015 and January 2016 they were collected and identified two individuals, an adult female (SVL 79 mm) and a juvenile (SVL 44 mm). They were then deposited in the herpetological collection of the Universidad Nacional de San Juan.
