    In March 2013, hundreds of academics, preservationists, consultants, historical interpreters, museum professionals, living historians, students, K-12 teachers, and new media specialists gathered in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to assess the state and potential future of the study of the American Civil War. The essays in this special issue build on the themes of that conference: embracing the democratic and civic potential of historical thinking; reaffirming the power of place and the importance of specific, focused stories; integrating military, political, social, cultural, and gender history; and encouraging collaboration among historians working in different settings.     Effects of Measurement back-action in the stabilization of a Bose-Einstein condensate through feedback

    We apply quantum filtering and control to a particle in a harmonic trap under continuous position measurement, and show that a simple static feedback law can be used to cool the system. The final steady state is Gaussian and dependent on the feedback strength and coupling between the system and probe. In the limit of weak coupling this final state becomes the ground state. An earlier model by Haine et. al. (PRA 69, 2004) without measurement back-action showed dark states: states that did not display error signals, thus remaining unaffected by the control. This paper shows that for a realistic measurement process this is not true, which indicates that a Bose-Einstein condensate may be driven towards the ground state from any arbitrary initial state.Comment: 1 Tex, 4 PS pictures, 1 bbl fil

    Transition from antibunching to bunching for two dipole-interacting atoms

    It is known that there is a transition from photon antibunching to bunching in the resonance fluorescence of a driven system of two two-level atoms with dipole-dipole interaction when the atomic distance decreases and the other parameters are kept fixed.     A Quantum Langevin Formulation of Risk-Sensitive Optimal Control

    In this paper we formulate a risk-sensitive optimal control problem for continuously monitored open quantum systems modelled by quantum Langevin equations. The optimal controller is expressed in terms of a modified conditional state, which we call a risk-sensitive state, that represents measurement knowledge tempered by the control purpose. One of the two components of the optimal controller is dynamic, a filter that computes the risk-sensitive state. The second component is an optimal control feedback function that is found by solving the dynamic programming equation. The optimal controller can be implemented using classical electronics. The ideas are illustrated using an example of feedback control of a two-level atom

    Correlation between the clinical severity of laryngomalacia and endoscopic findings

    Objective: To correlate the clinical severity of laryngomalacia (LM) with endoscopic findings, swallowing evaluations and polysomnography in a cohort of patients. Method: We conducted a retrospective analysis between 2017-2018 on a cohort of patients diagnosed with upper airway obstruction (UAO), stridor, noisy breathing or laryngomalacia. This study took place at the Pediatric Pulmonology Department, Riley Children's Hospital, Indianapolis, United States of America. Results: There were 157 patients with laryngomalacia included in the study. Patients with severe LM were significantly younger than those with mild LM (p=0.0214) and moderate LM (p=0.0220). Subjects with type I of LM were significantly older than type III (p=0.0051). When associations were tested between polysomnogram (PSG) variables and clinical severity, there were significant associations with age at PSG. The overall apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) in mild (p=0.0103) and moderate (p=0.0242) were significantly lower than the severe group. The rapid eye movement (REM) AHI was significantly lower in moderate cases than severe (p=0.0134). The end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) peak was significantly lower in mild cases than severe (p=0.0141). The total sleep time (TST) peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2) 90% occurs in both mild (p=0.0197) and moderate (p=0.0498) were significantly lower than the severe group. Conclusions: The severity of the clinical manifestations of LM did not correlate with the different endoscopic types in our study. The presence of cyanosis was associated with type III LM. Rapid eye movement AHI and EtCO2 in polysomnogram were remained significantly associated with clinical severity

    Cavity Induced Interfacing of Atoms and Light

    This chapter introduces cavity-based light-matter quantum interfaces, with a single atom or ion in strong coupling to a high-finesse optical cavity. We discuss the deterministic generation of indistinguishable single photons from these systems; the atom-photon entanglement intractably linked to this process; and the information encoding using spatio-temporal modes within these photons. Furthermore, we show how to establish a time-reversal of the aforementioned emission process to use a coupled atom-cavity system as a quantum memory. Along the line, we also discuss the performance and characterisation of cavity photons in elementary linear-optics arrangements with single beam splitters for quantum-homodyne measurements.Comment: to appear as a book chapter in a compilation "Engineering the Atom-Photon Interaction" published by Springer in 2015, edited by A.     Subcortical brain atrophy persists even in HAART-regulated HIV disease

    The purpose of this study was to determine the pattern and extent of caudate nucleus and putamen atrophy in HIV-infected men with well-controlled immune status and viral replication. 155 men underwent structural brain magnetic resonance imaging; 84 were HIV-infected and 71 were uninfected controls. MRI data were processed using the Fully Deformable Segmentation routine, producing volumes for the right and left caudate nucleus and putamen, and 3-D maps of spatial patterns of thickness. There was significant atrophy in the HIV-infected men in both the caudate and putamen, principally in the anterior regions. The volume of the basal ganglia was inversely associated with the time since first seropositivity, suggesting that either there is a chronic, subclinical process that continues in spite of therapy, or that the extent of the initial insult caused the extent of atrophy
