New Distribution Records of Michigan Mosquitoes, 1948-1963
Excerpt: The following records result from data accumulated from the years 1948-63. A total of more than 175 field samples, usually from different locations, have been taken from 27 counties in the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. The total of 2,199 specimens includes 241 larvae, 452 adult males, and 1506 adult females
Telescopes on the Moon or pie in the sky?
The question is examined of whether it makes sense to believe that there will one day be an interferometric array of telescopes on the Moon. The question is really one of national commitment to a lunar base, since it is not likely that a scientific undertaking of this magnitude would occur in the absence of permanent human presence on the Moon. A discussion is also given of the real possibility if the exploration of space should be a multinational effort
Molecular electronic structures : an introduction
The present book is an introduction to molecular electronic structural theory. It is aimed at students who have reasonable familiarity with differential and integral calculus and are beginning a study of the physical description of chemical systems. We have decided to concentrate on the description of ground state electronic structures, or, in other words, the principles of chemical bonding in molecules. In this important respect the present volume differs from our earlier book "Molecular Orbital Theory" (Benjamin, 1964), which included a strong emphasis on the description of electronic excited states.
In our treatment of molecular wave functions we make use of "symmetry operators", the latter being operators that leave the Hamiltonian unchanged. By using such symmetry operators, it is possible to characterize the electronic structures of molecules. In our opinion, this approach provides good preparation for later studies that may be undertaken in which formal group theory is employed.
The heart of the book is Chapter 4, where we discuss in some detail the bonding in several selected molecules. Examples from both organic and inorganic chemistry are included in an attempt to make the coverage as general as possible. Our objective here is to provide an introduction to molecular bonding that will serve as a foundation for more advanced study of electronic structures.
Suggested reading and problems are included in each chapter. Some of the problems are challenging, but working them will give the student a much better feeling for the principles involved. The suggested reading is of two types, books (and reviews) and original papers. And we urge students to examine at least some of the older papers in the field, as muck can be learned from them

Water quality of Texas bays (nutrients, trace elements and toxic compounds)
This manuscript is designed to compare the nutrient balances and trace element significance in Texas Bays and Estuaries. The task of assigning water quality criteria in all estuarine waters rests with the federal Environmental Protection Agency. However, the Texas Bays and Estuaries represent a unique range of environments of the U.S. Coast that stand alone and therefore must be assigned standards appropriate to the environment. Therefore we have compared several Texas Bays relative to nutrients and trace elements through an analysis of data from our files, a life history data bank from literature survey, a study of the Corpus Christi area, personal communication with a wide range of individuals and information from the Texas Water Quality Board, Texas Water Development Board, the U.S. Geological Survey and the State Health Department.May 30, 1974Taken in part from a report on Development of Biological Criteria, Establishment of Guidelines for Texas Coast Management IAC-(74-75)-0685 NSF RANN-61-34870xMarine Scienc

Sportfishing creel census pilot study
The sportfishing creel census project was originated to obtain information relating to the use of the Corpus Christi Bay area for sportfishing, the amount of fish caught and other environmental information relating to the total productivity cycles of the bay system. The Census is to be conducted during the summer months of June, July and August 1974 and the pilot study was made during August 1973. The total catch will be used in a current project to assess carbon, nitrogen, phosporous input and output to the bay system.March 15, 1974To The Lower Nueces River Water Supply DistrictMarine Scienc
A study of the Io-associated plasma and neutral sodium cloud
Narrow-band interference filter images were obtained for the Io torus at the S II wavelengths of 6716, 6731 and at the wavelenght of the S III, 9532 spectrum. The purpose of these observations is to study the short term temporal behavior of the torus and to gain a better understanding of the systematic morphology of the torus. From these images, estimates were obtained for the electron and ion densities and ion temperatures as a function of longitude, latitude, radius from Jupiter, and time. From the analysis of images taken in 1983 and 1984, extremely sharp longitudinal variations in plasma density were detected, subcorotational velocities were measures in the torus plasma, the presence of an optical east-west brightness asymmetry was confirmed in the ion emissions, and longitudinal variations were detected in torus ion temperatures
