The Political Economy of Myanmar's Transition

After two decades of military rule, the pace of change has startled almost everyone and led to a great deal of cautious optimism. To make sense of the transition and assess the case for optimism, this article explores the political economy of Myanmar's dual transition from state socialism to capitalism and from dictatorship to democracy. It analyses changes within Myanmar society from a critical political economy perspective in order to both situate these developments within broader regional trends and to evaluate the country's current trajectory. In particular, the emergence of state-mediated capitalism and politico-business complexes in Myanmar's borderlands are emphasised. These dynamics, which have empowered a narrow oligarchy, are less likely to be undone by the reform process than to fundamentally shape the contours of reform. Consequently, Myanmar's future may not be unlike those of other Southeast Asian states that have experienced similar developmental trajectories
Ray-based calculations of backscatter in laser fusion targets
A 1D, steady-state model for Brillouin and Raman backscatter from an
inhomogeneous plasma is presented. The daughter plasma waves are treated in the
strong damping limit, and have amplitudes given by the (linear) kinetic
response to the ponderomotive drive. Pump depletion, inverse-bremsstrahlung
damping, bremsstrahlung emission, Thomson scattering off density fluctuations,
and whole-beam focusing are included. The numerical code DEPLETE, which
implements this model, is described. The model is compared with traditional
linear gain calculations, as well as "plane-wave" simulations with the paraxial
propagation code pF3D. Comparisons with Brillouin-scattering experiments at the
OMEGA Laser Facility [T. R. Boehly et al., Opt. Commun. 133, p. 495 (1997)]
show that laser speckles greatly enhance the reflectivity over the DEPLETE
results. An approximate upper bound on this enhancement, motivated by phase
conjugation, is given by doubling the DEPLETE coupling coefficient. Analysis
with DEPLETE of an ignition design for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) [J.
A. Paisner, E. M. Campbell, and W. J. Hogan, Fusion Technol. 26, p. 755
(1994)], with a peak radiation temperature of 285 eV, shows encouragingly low
reflectivity. Re-absorption of Raman light is seen to be significant in this

Decades of research and clinical observations have demonstrated the harmful effects of parent-child separation on children's short- and long-term well-being (Society for Research in Child Development, 2018). Young children may be separated from their parents due to a variety of circumstances. This article provides recommendations for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of young children who experience trauma as a result of being separated from their parent due to incarceration. An example of a multidisciplinary health care clinic is highlighted to demonstrate how clinicians and community partners work together to provide evaluation and care coordination services for children in foster care
Position-sensitive detection of ultracold neutrons with an imaging camera and its implications to spectroscopy
Position-sensitive detection of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) is demonstrated
using an imaging charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. A spatial resolution less
than 15 m has been achieved, which is equivalent to an UCN energy
resolution below 2 pico-electron-volts through the relation . Here, the symbols , , and are the
energy resolution, the spatial resolution, the neutron rest mass and the
gravitational acceleration, respectively. A multilayer surface convertor
described previously is used to capture UCNs and then emits visible light for
CCD imaging. Particle identification and noise rejection are discussed through
the use of light intensity profile analysis. This method allows different types

Independent associations of socioeconomic factors with disability and pain in adults with knee osteoarthritis
Abstract Background The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between function, pain and stiffness outcomes with individual and community socioeconomic status (SES) measures among individuals with radiographic knee osteoarthritis (rOA). Methods Cross-sectional data from the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project were analyzed for adults age 45 and older with knee rOA (nβ=β782) and a subset with both radiographic and symptomatic knee OA (nβ=β471). Function, pain and stiffness were measured using the Western Ontario and McMasters Universities Index of Osteoarthritis (WOMAC). Individual SES measures included educational attainment (<12 years, β₯12 years) and occupation type (managerial, non-managerial), while community SES was measured using Census block group poverty rate (<12%, 12-25%, β₯25%). SES measures were individually and simultaneously examined in linear regression models adjusting for age, gender, race, body mass index (BMI), occupational physical activity score (PAS), comorbidity count, and presence of hip symptoms. Results In analyses among all individuals with rOA, models which included individual SES measures were observed to show that occupation was significantly associated with WOMAC Function (Ξ² =2.91, 95% Confidence Interval (CI)β=β0.68-5.14), WOMAC Pain (Ξ² =0.93, 95% CIβ=β0.26-1.59) and WOMAC Total scores (Ξ² =4.05, 95% CIβ=β1.04-7.05), and education was significantly associated with WOMAC Function (Ξ² =3.57, 95% CIβ=β1.25-5.90) and WOMAC Total (Ξ² =4.56, 95% CIβ=β1.41-7.70) scores. In multivariable models including all SES measures simultaneously, most associations were attenuated. However, statistically significant results for education remained between WOMAC Function (Ξ² =2.83, 95% CIβ=β0.38-5.28) and WOMAC Total (Ξ² =3.48, 95% CIβ=β0.18-6.78), as well as for the association between occupation and WOMAC Pain (Ξ² =0.78, 95% CIβ=β0.08-1.48). In rOA subgroup analyses restricted to those with symptoms, we observed a significant increase in WOMAC Pain (Ξ² =1.36, 95% CIβ=β0.07-2.66) among individuals living in a block group with poverty rates greater than 25%, an association that remained when all SES measures were considered simultaneously (Ξ² =1.35, 95% CIβ=β0.06-2.64).
