    Efficiency and Sample Size Requirements for Stated Choice Studies

    Stated choice (SC) experiments represent the dominant data paradigm in the study of behavioral responses of individuals, households as well as other organizations, yet little is known about the sample size requirements for models estimated from such data. Current sampling theory does not adequately address the issue and hence researchers have had to resort to simple rules of thumb or ignore the issue and collect samples of arbitrary size, hoping that the sample is sufficiently large enough to produce reliable parameter estimates. In this paper, we demonstrate how to generate efficient designs (based on D-efficiency and a newly proposed sample size S-efficiency measure) using prior parameter values to estimate multinomial logit models containing both generic and alternative-specific parameters. Sample size requirements for such designs in SC studies are investigated. In a numerical case study is shown that a D-efficient and even more an Sefficient design needs a (much) smaller sample size than a random orthogonal design. Furthermore, it is shown that wide level range has a significant positive influence on the efficiency of the design and therefore on the reliability of the parameter estimates

    The Design of Stated Choice Experiments: The State of Practice and Future Challenges

    Since the work of Louviere and Woodworth (1983) and Louviere and Hensher (1983), stated choice (SC) methods have become the dominant data paradigm in the study of behavioural responses of individuals and households as well as other organizations, in fields as diverse as marketing, transport and environmental and health economics, to name but a few. In SC experiments, it is usual for sampled respondents to be asked to choose from amongst a number of labelled or unlabelled alternatives defined on a number of attribute dimensions, each in turn described by pre-specified levels drawn from some underlying experimental design. The choice task is then repeated a number of times, up to the total number of choice sets being offered over the experiment. Several experimental design strategies are available to the practitioner, however, within the transport literature, it appears that the most common form of experimental design used are orthogonal fractional factorial designs. In this paper we review the properties of such designs, and demonstrate that these properties are unlikely to be retained through to the estimation process.     Efficient Designs for Alternative Specific Choice Experiments

    In the past, research on the construction of efficient designs for stated choice experiments has been limited to unlabeled experiments with generic parameter estimates. In this paper, by deriving the asymptotic (co)variance matrix for the alternative-specific MNL model, the authors are able to generate efficient alternative-specific experiments. The authors show that D-error assuming prior parameter values equal to zero is unable to explain statistical efficiency in orthogonal designs and that wide attribute levels are likely to yield more reliable parameter estimates than using narrow attribute levels. The authors also show that the D-optimality criterion may yield inefficient parameter estimates for some design attributes given that trade-offs are made between the efficiencies of different parameter estimates

    The chronostratigraphy of the Anthropocene in southern Africa: Current status and potential

    The process for the formal ratification of the proposed Anthropocene Epoch involves the identification of a globally isochronous stratigraphic signal to mark its starting point. The search for a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), a unique reference sequence that would be used to fix the start of the epoch, is in progress but none of the candidate sections are located in Africa. We assessed the currently available stratigraphic evidence for the possible markers of the Anthropocene in southern Africa and found that, although most markers have been identified in the region, the robustly dated, high resolution records required for the GSSP are very sparse. We then assessed the extent and stratigraphic resolution of a range of potential natural archives and conclude that a small number of permanent lakes, as well as marine sediments, corals and peats from selected locations in southern Africa could provide the temporal resolution required. With sufficient chronological control and multi-proxy analyses, one of these archives could provide a useful auxiliary stratotype thereby helping to confirm the global reach, and extending the utility, of the selected Anthropocene GSSP

    Ferric iron geometry and coordination during hydrolysis and ferrihydrite precipitation

    Definitive structural characterisation of ferrihydrite has challenged scientists primarily due to its nanosized particles and inherent long-range structural disorder which challenges analytical methodology (and modelling) typically employed to determine the structure of minerals. Here we report on the application of a synchrotron quick-scanning X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) approach, which allows the collection of Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectral data to k = 15 Å-1 in < 1 minute, to obtain unparalleled iron Kedge data on the hydrolysis of FeIII(H2O)6 and ferrihydrite precipitation. Modelling of the pre-edge and EXAFS data: 1) supports theoretical studies which have suggested the existence of a monomeric penta-coordinated FeIII hydrolysis species and; 2) corroborates recently proposed structural models of ferrihydrite that contain tetrahedral FeIII. Modelling results indicate that ferrihydrite consists of 15 to 25 % tetrahedral FeIII and suggest that this geometry must be included in any comprehensive structural model of ferrihydrite and, furthermore, should be considered when evaluating the reactivity, stability and other structure-property relationships of this mineral. © The Authors

    Ordered groupoids and the holomorph of an inverse semigroup

    We present a construction for the holomorph of an inverse semigroup, derived from the cartesian closed structure of the category of ordered groupoids. We compare the holomorph with the monoid of mappings that preserve the ternary heap operation on an inverse semigroup: for groups these two constructions coincide. We present detailed calculations for semilattices of groups and for the polycyclic monoids.Comment: 16 page

    Suppression of Raf-1 kinase activity and MAP kinase signalling by RKIP

    Raf-1 phosphorylates and activates MEK-1, a kinase that activates the extracellular signal regulated kinases (ERK). This kinase cascade controls the proliferation and differentiation of different cell types. Here we describe a Raf-1-interacting protein, isolated using a yeast two-hybrid screen. This protein inhibits the phosphorylation and activation of MEK by Raf-1 and is designated RKIP (Raf kinase inhibitor protein). In vitro, RKIP binds to Raf-1, MEK and ERK, but not to Ras. RKIP co-immunoprecipitates with Raf-1 and MEK from cell lysates and colocalizes with Raf-1 when examined by confocal microscopy. RKIP is not a substrate for Raf-1 or MEK, but competitively disrupts the interaction between these kinases. RKIP overexpression interferes with the activation of MEK and ERK, induction of AP-1-dependent reporter genes and transformation elicited by an oncogenically activated Raf-1 kinase. Downregulation of endogenous RKIP by expression of antisense RNA or antibody microinjection induces the activation of MEK-, ERK- and AP-1-dependent transcription.
