Long-range gravitational-like interaction in a neutral atomic cold gas

A quasi-resonant laser induces a long-range attractive force within a cloud of cold atoms. We take advantage of this force to build in the laboratory a system of particles with a one-dimensional gravitational-like interaction, at a fluid level of modeling. We give experimental evidences of such an interaction in a cold Strontium gas, studying the density profile of the cloud, its size as a function of the number of atoms, and its breathing oscillations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Leveraging BIM and big data to deliver well maintained highways

    Get PDF
The Highway infrastructure is one of the most valuable assets for any state or national Government. Efficient operations of Highways lead to success of national and local economies as well as improve the quality of life of the general public dependent on it.  In order to ensure aging road networks continues to move with its ever increasing number of users, requires maintenance and improvements to the road network at the highest standard. Increasing scrutiny over the cost of maintenance along with increasing pressure from Government and the public for transparency over road network spending, has made a strong case for more efficient management of the Highway road asset and traffic management data. Better management of information could allow for life cycle management of asset data and predictive analytics. This paper focuses on proposing a platform that integrates various technologies and systems of Highways Authority and its supply chain, to allow for continuous flow of data throughout an assets life-cycle, leading to seamless, collaborative and effecting working. The integration takes into account developments in the area of BIM and big data; BIM provides a platform to better integrate information whereas big data can provide analytical platform to draw insights

Persistent Atrial Fibrillation: The Role of Left Atrial Posterior Wall Isolation and Ablation Strategies.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a global disease with rapidly rising incidence and prevalence. It is associated with a higher risk of stroke, dementia, cognitive decline, sudden and cardiovascular death, heart failure and impairment in quality of life. The disease is a major burden on the healthcare system. Paroxysmal AF is typically managed with medications or endocardial catheter ablation to good effect. However, a large proportion of patients with AF have persistent or long-standing persistent AF, which are more complex forms of the condition and thus more difficult to treat. This is in part due to the progressive electro-anatomical changes that occur with AF persistence and the spread of arrhythmogenic triggers and substrates outside of the pulmonary veins. The posterior wall of the left atrium is a common site for these changes and has become a target of ablation strategies to treat these more resistant forms of AF. In this review, we discuss the role of the posterior left atrial wall in persistent and long-standing persistent AF, the limitations of current endocardial-focused treatment strategies, and future perspectives on hybrid epicardial-endocardial approaches to posterior wall isolation or ablation

Real-world utilization of the pill-in-the-pocket method for terminating episodes of atrial fibrillation: data from the multinational Antiarrhythmic Interventions for Managing Atrial Fibrillation (AIM-AF) survey

    Get PDF
AIMS: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia encountered in clinical practice. Episodes may stop spontaneously (paroxysmal AF); may terminate only via intervention (persistent AF); or may persist indefinitely (permanent AF) (see European and American guidelines, referenced below, for more precise definitions). Recently, there has been renewed interest in an approach to terminate AF acutely referred to as 'pill-in-the-pocket' (PITP). The PITP is recognized in both the US and European guidelines as an effective option using an oral antiarrhythmic drug for acute conversion of acute/recent-onset AF. However, how PITP is currently used has not been systematically evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS: The recently published Antiarrhythmic Interventions for Managing Atrial Fibrillation (AIM-AF) survey included questions regarding current PITP usage, stratified by US vs. European countries surveyed, by representative countries within Europe, and by cardiologists vs. electrophysiologists. This manuscript presents the data from this planned sub-study. Our survey revealed that clinicians in both the USA and Europe consider PITP in about a quarter of their patients, mostly for recent-onset AF with minimal or no structural heart disease (guideline appropriate). However, significant deviations exist. See the Graphical abstract for a summary of the data. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the frequent use of PITP and the need for further physician education about appropriate and optimal use of this strategy

Relaxation to thermal equilibrium in the self-gravitating sheet model

We revisit the issue of relaxation to thermal equilibrium in the so-called "sheet model", i.e., particles in one dimension interacting by attractive forces independent of their separation. We show that this relaxation may be very clearly detected and characterized by following the evolution of order parameters defined by appropriately normalized moments of the phase space distribution which probe its entanglement in space and velocity coordinates. For a class of quasi-stationary states which result from the violent relaxation of rectangular waterbag initial conditions, characterized by their virial ratio R_0, we show that relaxation occurs on a time scale which (i) scales approximately linearly in the particle number N, and (ii) shows also a strong dependence on R_0, with quasi-stationary states from colder initial conditions relaxing much more rapidly. The temporal evolution of the order parameter may be well described by a stretched exponential function. We study finally the correlation of the relaxation times with the amplitude of fluctuations in the relaxing quasi-stationary states, as well as the relation between temporal and ensemble averages.Comment: 37 pages, 24 figures; some additional discussion of previous literature and other minor modifications, final published versio

Resonant Thickening of Disks by Small Satellite Galaxies

We study the vertical heating and thickening of galaxy disks due to accretion of small satellites. Our simulations are restricted to axial symmetry, which largely eliminates numerical evolution of the target galaxy but requires the trajectory of the satellite to be along the symmetry axis of the target. We find that direct heating of disk stars by the satellite is not important because the satellite's gravitational perturbation has little power at frequencies resonant with the vertical stellar orbits. The satellite does little damage to the disk until its decaying orbit resonantly excites large-scale disk bending waves. Bending waves can damp through dynamical friction from the halo or internal wave-particle resonances; we find that wave-particle resonances dominate the damping. The principal vertical heating mechanism is therefore dissipation of bending waves at resonances with stellar orbits in the disk. Energy can thus be deposited some distance from the point of impact of the satellite. The net heating from a tightly bound satellite can be substantial, but satellites that are tidally disrupted before they are able to excite bending waves do not thicken the disk.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, to appear in ApJ, latex (aaspp4.sty

Phase transitions in self-gravitating systems and bacterial populations with a screened attractive potential

We consider a system of particles interacting via a screened Newtonian potential and study phase transitions between homogeneous and inhomogeneous states in the microcanonical and canonical ensembles. Like for other systems with long-range interactions, we obtain a great diversity of microcanonical and canonical phase transitions depending on the dimension of space and on the importance of the screening length. We also consider a system of particles in Newtonian interaction in the presence of a ``neutralizing background''. By a proper interpretation of the parameters, our study describes (i) self-gravitating systems in a cosmological setting, and (ii) chemotaxis of bacterial populations in the original Keller-Segel model

Clinical cardiac electrophysiologic evaluation of the positive inotropic agent, DPI 201-106

DPI 201-106 is a new positive inotropic agent. The cardiac electrophysiology of 16 patients was studied before and during DPI 201-106 administration (loading dose of intravenous DPI 201-106, 1·8 mg kg−1 h−1 administered over 10 min, followed by a maintenance dose of 0·2 mg kg−1 h−1). DPI 201-106 had no effect on the sinus node. The AH interval during fixed-rate atrial pacing became prolonged during DPI 201-106 infusion. There was a significant prolongation of the QT interval [QT (corrected), 417 ± 22 to 502 ± 35 ms, P<0·05; QT (atrial pacing at 600 ms), 374 ±17 to 419 ± 23 ms, P<0·05; QT (ventricular pacing at 600 ms), 409 ± 37 to 449 ± 30 ms, P<0·05]. The ventricular effective refractory period significantly prolonged during DPI 201-106 administration (242 ± 21 to 287 ± 56 ms, P < 0·05), but the supernormal-period duration decreased. The atrial effective refractory period was shortened in four patients and prolonged in one (261 ± 67 to 240 ± 53 ms, NS). The corrected atrial repolarization time (PTac) shortened significantly during DPI 210-106 infusion (479 ± 26 to 445 ± 22 ms at 20 min of the maintenance dose, P<0·05). Atrial fibrillation was initiated in five patients during DPI infusion, but no ventricular arrhythmia was provoked. These findings suggest that DPI 201-106 has novel differential electrophysiological effects on atria and ventricle
