Surely fades away: Polaroid photography and the contradictions of cultural value
Photography has always had a precarious relation to cultural value: as Walter Benjamin put it, those who argued for photography as an art were bringing it to a tribunal it was in the process of overthrowing. This article examines the case of Polaroid, a company and technology that, after Kodak and prior to digital, contributed most to the mass- amateurization of photography, and therefore, one might expect, to its cultural devaluation. It considers the specific properties of the technology, the often skeptical reception Polaroid cameras and film received from the professional photographic press, and Polaroid’s own strategies of self-presentation, and finds that in each case a contradictory picture emerges. Like fast food, the Polaroid image is defined by its speed of appearance – the proximity of its production and consumption – and is accordingly devalued; and yet at the same time it produces a single, unique print. The professional photographic press, self- appointed arbiters of photographic value, were often rapturous about the technical breakthroughs achieved by Polaroid, but dismissive of the potential non-amateur applications and anxious about the implications for the ‘expert’ photographer of a camera that replaced the expert’s functions. For obvious marketing reasons, Polaroid itself was always keen to emphasize what the experts scorned in its products (simplicity of operation), and yet, equally, consistently positioned itself at the ‘‘luxury’’ end of the camera market and carried out an ambitious cultural program that emphasized the ‘‘aesthetic’’ potential of Polaroid photography. The article concludes that this highly ambivalent status of Polaroid technology in relation to cultural value means that it shares basic features with kitsch, a fact that has been exploited by, among others, William Wegman, and has been amplified by the current decline and imminent disappearance of Polaroid photograph
Polaroid after digital: technology, cultural form, and the social practices of snapshot photography
The essay is part of a larger project on the cultural history of Polaroid photography and draws on research done at the Polaroid Corporate archive at Harvard and at the Polaroid company itself in Waltham and Concord Massachusetts. It sets out to make an addition to the understanding of the new social practices generated by digital photography, but does so by examining an old technology rendered obsolete by the new. It outlines the recent history and decline of Polaroid and identifies the specific properties of the Polaroid image: its speed of appearance, its elimination of the darkroom, and the singularity of the final print. It then addresses the significance of the affinities and differences between the old and new ‘instant’ photographies, particularly in terms of the snapshot practices that they encourage
Polaroid, aperture, and Ansel Adams: rethinking the industry-aesthetic divide
This article takes the history of Polaroid photography as an opportunity to question a presupposition that underpins much thinking on photography: the split between industrial (ie useful) applications of photography and its fine art (ie aesthetic) manifestations. Critics as ideologically opposed as Peter Bunnell and Abigail Solomon-Godeau steadfastly maintain the existence of this separation of utility and aesthetics in photography, even if they take contrasting views on its meaning and desirability. However, Polaroid, at one time the second largest company in the photo industry, not only enjoyed close relations with those key representatives of fine art photography, Ansel Adams and the magazine Aperture, but it also intermittently asserted the ‘essentially aesthetic’ nature of its commercial and industrial activities in its own internal publications. The divide between industry and aesthetics is untenable, then, but this does not mean that the two poles were reconciled at Polaroid. While Aperture may have underplayed its commercial connections and Polaroid may have retrospectively exaggerated its own contributions to the development of fine art photography, most interesting are the contradictions and tensions that arise when the industrial and the aesthetic come together. The Making of Cloud Applications An Empirical Study on Software Development for the Cloud
Cloud computing is gaining more and more traction as a deployment and
provisioning model for software. While a large body of research already covers
how to optimally operate a cloud system, we still lack insights into how
professional software engineers actually use clouds, and how the cloud impacts
development practices. This paper reports on the first systematic study on how
software developers build applications in the cloud. We conducted a
mixed-method study, consisting of qualitative interviews of 25 professional
developers and a quantitative survey with 294 responses. Our results show that
adopting the cloud has a profound impact throughout the software development
process, as well as on how developers utilize tools and data in their daily
work. Among other things, we found that (1) developers need better means to
anticipate runtime problems and rigorously define metrics for improved fault
localization and (2) the cloud offers an abundance of operational data,
however, developers still often rely on their experience and intuition rather
than utilizing metrics. From our findings, we extracted a set of guidelines for
cloud development and identified challenges for researchers and tool vendors
Infrastructure for the Coupling of Dune Grids
We describe an abstract interface for the geometric coupling of finite element grids. The scope of the interface encompasses a wide range of domain decomposition techniques in use today, including nonconforming grids and grids of different dimensions. The couplings are described as sets of remote intersections, which encapsulate the relationships between pairs of elements on the coupling interface.
The abstract interface is realized in a module dune-grid-glue for the software framework dune. Several implementations of this interface exist, including one for general nonconforming couplings and a special efficient implementation for conforming interfaces. We present two numerical examples to show the flexibility of the approach
Poling effect on distribution of quenched random fields in a uniaxial relaxor ferroelectric
The frequency dependence of the dielectric permitivity's maximum has been
studied for poled and unpoled doped relaxor strontium barium niobate
(SBN-61:Cr). In both cases the maximum
found is broad and the frequency dispersion is strong. The present view of
random fields compensation in the unpoled sample is not suitable for explaining
this experimental result. We propose a new mechanism where the dispersion of
quenched random electric fields, affecting the nanodomains, is minimized after
poling. We test our proposal by numerical simulations on a random field Ising
model. Results obtained are in agreement with the polarization's measurements
presented by Granzow et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett {\bf 92}, 065701 (2004)].Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Modulation of Rat Skeletal Muscle Branched-Chain α-Keto Acid Dehydrogenase In Vivo Effects of Dietary Protein and Meal Consumption
The effects of dietary protein on the activity of skeletal muscle branched-chain a-keto acid dehydrogenase (BCKAD) were investigated. BCKAD is rate-limiting for branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolism by muscle; its activity is modulated by phosphorylation-dephosphorylation. In rats fed an adequate protein (25% casein) diet, BCKAD was - 2% active postabsorptively and increased to 10% or 16% active after a 25% or 50% protein meal, respectively. Prolonged feeding of a 50% protein diet increased postabsorptive BCKAD activity to 7% with further increases to 40% active postprandially. On a low protein (9% casein) diet BCKAD remained - 2% active regardless of meal-feeding. Dose-dependent activation of BCKAD by intravenous leucine in postabsorptive rats was blunted by a low protein diet. We conclude that excesses of dietary protein enhance the capacity of skeletal muscle to oxidize BCAA, muscle conserves BCAA when protein intake is inadequate, and skeletal muscle may play an important role in whole-body BCAA homeostasis
Liraglutide and renal outcomes in type 2 diabetes
In a randomized, controlled trial that compared liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 analogue, with placebo in patients with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk who were receiving usual care, we found that liraglutide resulted in lower risks of the primary end point (nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes) and death. However, the long-term effects of liraglutide on renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes are unknown
